"Dolton, IL - Two people are dead following what police are investigating as a possible murder-suicide after a standoff Tuesday that lasted more than five hours.
"The standoff, which centered at a house in the 14600 block of Avalon Avenue, ended after police entered and found 41-year-old Gregory McClain with a gunshot wound to his head and his wife -- identified as Latonya McClain -- dead at the scene from gunshot wounds, Dolton Detective Sgt. David Spigolon said.
"The man was pronounced dead at 2:25 p.m. at St. Margaret Mercy Healthcare Center in Hammond, Spigolon said.
"Shelton Fields, waiting near the scene, said Latonya McClain was being held hostage by Gregory McClain, whom he described as self-employed and struggling because of the economy."

"Connolly said the couple's adult daughter found the couple dead at 7:53 p.m. and called police. She had been worried because she had e-mailed her mother Sunday and hadn't heard back and found that unusual, he said.

"LAS VEGAS, NV — Police say a physician was shot dead and the patient who shot her died after turning the gun on himself.
"Police Lt. Lewis Roberts says it's not immediately clear why 80-year-old Eliseo Santos shot Dr. Edna Almaden Makabenta a little before 9:30 a.m. Monday at her office and then shot himself.
"Santos died a short time later at nearby University Medical Center.
"Police didn't identify Makabenta, but her name was on the blue awning on the modest white stucco one-story medical office.
"Patients and others say she was an internist who had been planning to retire after more than 20 years in practice."

She had been shot and stabbed by her husband, Francis Cole, an off-duty New York City Police Department lieutenant, according to Homicide Squad detectives investigating the case.
"Francis Cole, 48, was taken to Stony Brook University Medical Center with a self-inflicted gunshot wound and was pronounced dead a short time later, cops say."

"She said she left the room to let them to talk, then heard a gunshot. She told police she found McGirt lying on the floor.
"A short while later, Robinson was found in a home down the street with what police believe was a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Detectives said they are still investigating the shootings."

"Eldorado, MI - Authorities are investigating a possible murder suicide in the Town of Eldorado, in Fond du Lac County.
"Police say a Husband and Wife were shot dead at around 8:20 this morning.
"The woman was able to get a text message or call out to a friend indicating her husband was holding her hostage at gun point and she feared for her life.
"Sheriff’s deputies arrived on scene nine minutes later, to find the husband and wife outside. A Sheriff’s deputy told the man to put down the gun he was holding. Within second, however, the man had shot his wife at point blank range and then himself."

"Glendale, AZ - Police are investigating a possible murder-suicide of a couple near 43rd Avenue and Bethany Home Road Thursday night.
"The two people, in their 80s, were found dead in the backyard of a home in the 4600 block of West Cavalier Drive, police said. Each person appears to have died from a gunshot wound, and police were investigating the shooting as a murder-suicide."
"CAPE TOWN, South Africa - Cape Town police have opened a murder docket and are investigating.
"Hendrick and Marina Strydom, 74 and 67, were found dead in their bed by Marina's sister in Eland Street, Brackenfell on Tuesday. She entered the house through the unlocked front door.
"Each had a gunshot wound to their head.
"The Strydoms' 46-year-old son Marius, also shot in the head, was found alongside them in a critical condition. He was taken to Tygerberg Hospital where he died.

"Latta, SC - Marion County law enforcement responded to an attempted murder-suicide Tuesday night.
"According to Marion County Coroner Jerry Richardson, the incident happened around 9:20 p.m. at home on Sand Clay Court, just off Highway 917.
"Richardson said 64 year old Ron Richardson shot his live-in girlfriend Arista Snipes in the neck and then shot himself.
"According to the coroner, Snipes is recovering in a local hospital.
"The coroner said Richardson died at the scene."
"CAVE CREEK, AZ - Two people were found dead Tuesday morning in a murder/suicide near 61st Street and East Dixileta Drive in Cave Creek.
"The names have not yet been released, but the Maricopa County Sheriff's Office confirmed that the female victim and a witness are from out of state.
"A woman called deputies around 4 a.m. after reportedly witnessing a homicide at a nearby residence, authorities said. Sheriff's deputies arrived to find one woman dead outside the home, sheriff's spokesman Deputy Doug Matteson said.
"Deputies then ordered a SWAT team into the house, believing a suspect was inside, sheriff's spokesman Brian Lee said.
"The search revealed one man dead inside the house."

"Macon, GA - An east Bibb County shooting Monday that left a woman dead and a man injured is being investigated as a domestic-related homicide and suicide attempt, according to a news release from the Bibb County Sheriff's Office.
"Deputies were dispatched to the home, 5545 Marion Road, at 5:42 p.m. and found Betty Mullis, 71, dead with a gunshot wound to her head.
"Her husband, James Wilbur Mullis, 69, was still alive with what authorities said was a self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head. He is in critical condition at The Medical Center of Central Georgia.
"Neighbors called 911 at James Mullis' request not knowing the exact emergency, according to the news release. Mullis left his neighbors house and returned to his home before authorities arrived."

"WINAMAC, IN — A married couple in the process of separating is dead after a murder-suicide Monday morning in Winamac.
"Police Chief Jeff Hines [said] the man drove his vehicle into the woman’s car at North Market and 13th streets, and then killed his wife while she was in the car.
"Hines said two children, ages 10 and 13, were also in the car and were not physically injured. Police are continuing their investigation."

Of these, ten (or 7.5%) were female perpetrated... comparisons revealed that female homicide-suicide perpetrators were more likely than female homicide-suicide victims to live in mobile homes, kill their lover or ex-lover, have their crime accidentally discovered, leave a suicide note, kill on a weekend, and be depressed, but are less likely than female homicide-suicide victims to live with a spouse. Additionally, female homicide-suicide perpetrators were more likely than individual female suicides to live in mobile homes but less likely to live alone and to be depressed."

"Chicoutimi, QC - Police are poring over the tragic scene inside a Chicoutimi home where they discovered the dead bodies of a man and three children.
"A woman at the house called 911 for help a few minutes before midnight last night.
"`We found the woman in question who was injured and afterward we found four people dead inside the home – a man and three children,` said Constable Bruno Cormier with the City of Saguenay’s municipal police force
"The woman was seriously injured, but her life is no longer in danger, police said. Details remain sketchy about the deaths in what neighbours describe as a quiet residential area.

"Alachua County sheriff's deputies responded Tuesday about 7:20 p.m. to Nancy A. Calhoun's Newberry home, 3715 SW 202nd St. There they found Calhoun, 64, and her son, James R. Truluck, 35, with gunshot wounds to the head.
"Truluck was dead at the scene. Calhoun was treated for critical injuries before being flown to Shands at the University of Florida. She died Thursday night at the hospital.
"Family members had called deputies to the home. They had gone there to investigate after noticing Calhoun didn't go online as usual to chat and play games, according to the Sheriff's Office.
"Sheriff's Office spokesman Art Forgey said the investigation indicates the incident was a murder-suicide. He declined to say what person is suspected of being the shooter.

"According to several affiliates, 45-year-old Richard Heatwole committed suicide after a two-hour standoff with police in Alexander County, NC, near Winston-Salem.
"An Amber Alert was canceled for his two children, 10-year-old Haley Heatwole and 6-year-old Hayes Heatwole. The alert said the three were possibly headed to St. Petersburg, where Heatwole once lived.
"Investigators say he held his kids hostage at a home in Taylorsville this morning. Paramedics checked out the kids, who are OK.
"Heatwole was the prime suspect in a triple homicide in North Carolina. One of the victims was Heatwole's ex-wife, who is the kids' mother. The bodies were found in a home in Buncombe County on New Year's Day.
"Heatwole was on probation in Pinellas County for several drug possession charges. He was arrested in November of 2007 and lived in St. Petersburg at the time, according to his arrest report.
"Deputies said they arrived at the family's home outside of Asheville, NC after someone called 911. When deputies arrived they found the bodies of two people inside the home. While investigating the case, they found a third person's body inside a nearby home."

"EL CAJON, CA — A woman and man were found dead inside an El Cajon apartment Thursday morning in what police are calling a murder-suicide.
"El Cajon officers were sent to Hunter's Run Apartments on Broadway, east of state Route 67, to check on the welfare of a person about 10:15 a.m. A caller told police he had received a message from his brother indicating his brother was contemplating suicide, police said.
"Officers said they entered the apartment and spoke with a teenage girl who had been sleeping inside. She was not injured.
"`The girl told police her mother and her mother's live-in boyfriend were in their bedroom`, police said.
"Officers entered the locked bedroom and found the bodies of a 33-year-old woman and a 50-year-old man.
"Police said the woman had a single gunshot wound to the head. The man had an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head."
"VAN WERT, OH -- A 28-year-old Van Wert man stabbed another man Thursday morning and then tried to commit suicide, the Van Wert Police Department reported.
"Heather Case, of 711 N. Washington St., called police at 4:43 a.m. saying a man she knows had entered her residence and stabbed Gabriel McConn, 31, of Van Wert. He was a guest at Case's home. McConn had a single stab wound to his back and was taken to Van Wert County Hospital.
"Police searched for the suspect, whose name had not been released, and found him in the garage at the residence. He was believed to have tried to kill himself. Officers resuscitated him and he was taken to Van Wert County Hospital. He and McConn were later taken by helicopter to hospitals in Fort Wayne, Ind."

"BOULDER, CO — The Nederland man who shot and killed a general manager at Eldora Mountain Resort killed himself after getting into a shootout with a deputy, the Boulder County coroner's office said.
"The coroner's office said 24-year-old Derik Bonestroo, a ski lift operator at the resort, shot himself after being wounded during the gunbattle.
"Officials previously said Boulder County Sheriff's Deputy John Seifert fired the shot that killed Bonestroo; however, the coroner's office said Wednesday that Bonestroo's death was ruled a suicide.
"`Although the deputy wounded Mr. Bonestroo, the wounds did not cause his death,` Coroner Thomas J. Faure said in a statement.
"Authorities say Bonestroo shot Brian Mahon, 49, at the resort's pump house at about 7:30 a.m. Tuesday after yelling something about religion. Mahon was shot once in the stomach and once in the head and died at the scene.

" McALLEN, TX — A 28-year-old man kidnapped his former girlfriend, shot her to death in a grocery store on New Year's Even then crashed into the front of a Wal-Mart and killed himself, police said.
"The ordeal began Tuesday afternoon when Moises Gonzalez abducted Maura Marroquin, 23, of Rio Grande City, at gunpoint. He stole at least two cars as police gave chase across several South Texas cities.
"Gonzalez, of San Antonio, wound up in a Harlingen grocery store Wednesday night where police said he shot Marroquin and fled in a hijacked sport utility vehicle. The stolen vehicle was equipped with a global positioning system tracking device that allowed police to follow it.
"Gonzalez drove the stolen car into a Weslaco Wal-Mart and killed himself. Witnesses reported hearing gunshots as the vehicle crashed through the front of the store."

"ELSMERE, KY -- A man killed himself after shooting his estranged wife in the head Tuesday night in Elsmere.
"Elsmere Police said John Decker, 49, and his estranged wife, Terri Decker, 41, were at the home of his father on Dell Street when John grabbed a gun and shot his wife in the head. He later went to the home the couple had once shared a few hundred yards away and killed himself.
"Terri Decker was in critical but stable condition at University Hospital Wednesday. Friends said Terri was on life support and not expected to survive.
"According to friends of the couple, John Decker, 49, had hit rock bottom. He had lost his job, his home and his wife. On top of it all, he was caring for his father who suffered from Alzheimer’s disease.
"Despite their separation, police said the couple had been spending time together, raising questions about what led to the shooting."
"SACRAMENTO, CA - The Nevada County Sheriff's Department on Wednesday reported finding the bodies of an elderly couple in what is suspected to be a murder-suicide.
"Around noon Wednesday, the sheriff's communications center received a call from a family who lived from out of the area asking for a welfare check on an elderly couple because the family had not heard from them in several days. The couple lived in the Peardale area, according to a press release.
"Deputies went to the home and found an elderly man and woman with fatal gunshot sounds. It appears that the man shot the woman before turning the gun on himself, the Sheriff's Department said.
"The deaths are still under investigation and the names of the pair aren't being released until the next of kin has been notified and positive identification has been made, authorities said."

"MARBLETOWN, NY – A retired state trooper assigned to the Thruway shot and killed his estranged wife early Wednesday morning and then took his own life, State Police said.
"William Cotto, 53, had entered his wife’s residence at 3657 Main Street in Marbletown around 4 a.m. armed with a shotgun and shot and killed his wife, 49-year-old Isol Cotto. Cotto them went to a parking lot at a nearby gas station and shot himself to death, police said.
"No one else at the residence was injured.

At the time of his arrest, State Police secured all weapons known to be in Cotto’s possession. They included a shotgun and ammunition, as well as knives and billy clubs. He was arraigned and committed to the Ulster County Jail on 5,000 bail.

"Police say they expect to file murder charges against Frederick Cleveland, 23, a sanitation worker for Lansdowne Borough. Cleveland was hospitalized in critical condition with stab wounds police believe were self-inflicted after the murderous attack.
"The situation unfolded Tuesday night on the 400 block of Foss Avenue in the Drexel Hill section of Upper Darby.
"Chitwood said Cleveland confronted his ex-girlfriend on the porch of her parents’ home. She ran in and locked the door, but he broke in.
"Chitwood says the two struggled in the living room and `continued upstairs into the bathroom, where she was stabbed and found dead on the floor.` He says the woman’s little sister hid in a closet and heard the struggle. Police say the man faces murder and other charges.
"The suspect was found lying on the kitchen floor with a stab wound to the chest.
"Chitwood indicated the crime scene was one of brutal carnage."

"Norristown, PA - Montgomery County authorities say a Bridgeport man jumped to his death from a bridge over the weekend after he apparently accidentally killed his live-in girlfriend earlier in the week.
"Police say James Goeke tied a rope around his neck and jumped from the Dannehower Bridge Saturday afternoon. When police went to his home to notify his girlfriend, they found a badly decomposed body, believed to be Michelle Kavenaugh.
"District attorney Risa Ferman says it appears the 42-year-old woman was strangled during a consensual sexual encounter. She says police also found a note signed by Goeke:
"… `indicating that it was a terrible accident. It was too late to save her and he wrote that he was going to join her.`
"Detectives found Kavenaugh in the master bedroom of the Ross Road apartment with a cloth robe belt around her neck. Prosecutors are calling this a homicide-suicide and don’t believe that anyone else was involved."

"Investigators say a man showed up at the home of his ex-girlfriend, and shot another man inside the house. They say he then shot and killed himself.
"His name is not being released until relatives are notified of his death.
"The shooting victim, 32-year-old Chris Sharts, was taken to Bayfront Hospital where he is in critical condition.
"According to the Manatee County Sheriff’s Office, the suspect went to the home to talk to his ex-girlfriend.
"When he arrived and saw Sharts inside the home, he confronted him about his relationship with his ex, and shot him.

"WEST JEFFERSON, OH - West Jefferson police say a man meticulously and methodically planned every detail of a murder-suicide in what was apparently, until recently, a trouble-free relationship.
"Teddy Thompson, 50, used a belt to strangle his longtime girlfriend Mary Kington, 56, of Worthington late Saturday night in his West Jefferson apartment in Madison County, said Police Sgt. Terry Ward.
"Then, he carefully put her in bed, placed her hands across her chest and tucked her in under the covers. He lay down next to her and shot himself once in the head with a .38-caliber revolver.
"Authorities found the couple just after 10 p.m. Sunday after Kington's daughter called police and said she hadn't heard from her mother in more than a day.
"'People are saying this had been a pleasant relationship,' Ward said. 'Then recently, something happened and the mother told the daughter if she came up dead, Teddy Thompson did it.'
"Kington was a home health-care worker who cared for the elderly and had three children and a grandson.
"Thompson had been planning the deaths for at least two weeks, Ward said."

"DALLAS, TX - A mother and her two young children were found shot to death Friday, possibly by the mother who may have also staged a series of attacks on the family over the last two weeks, police said.
"No official ruling on the deaths has been made. 'We are still waiting for tests to come back to determine if it was in fact a murder/suicide,' Dallas police spokesman Senior Cpl. Kevin Janse said.
"Police said there were at least three disturbance calls involving the dead woman since Dec. 6, when she reported that a gun-wielding man stole her purse and laptop computer outside the real-estate office where she worked with her husband.
"Officers had visited the home twice within the past week, responding to a reported home invasion, assault and kidnapping.
"'We are looking to determine whether or not they were valid offenses and whether they occurred the way they were reported,' Miller said.
"On Dec. 13, 51-year-old Frank Geis was interviewed by police after he was apparently assaulted in his home, according to police reports obtained by The Dallas Morning News. His wife told police that two men dressed in black and wearing ski masks and gloves burst into the home around 8:30 a.m. She said they beat her husband with a hammer on the right side of his head.
"Jeanmarie Geis said that after the assault on her husband, she was kidnapped by the two men. She told police the men tied her up with duct tape and taped her eyes shut.
"Later, the men put her in a car and tried to sexually assault her. She told police that when she resisted, they pushed her out of the car and fled the scene, according to police reports.
"The next day, she was in her driveway when a man approached her, put a gun to her head and forced her into a car, according to police reports. He made her remove her shirt and rubbed the barrel of the gun across her face, she told police. The man then told her, 'You're going to be mine.'
"Jeanmarie Geis also told police that the man said, 'This is for what your sweet daddy did to my family.' The woman was the daughter of the late state District Judge Mark Tolle, who presided over some high-profile criminal trials in Dallas.
"According to the police reports, Geis escaped from the car. The man chased her and pinned her to the ground but fled again when a nearby garage door opened."

"Investigators said deputies responded to a call of shots fired at a home on Adams Avenue in Dundee just after 6:00p.m.
"When they arrived they found one man outside who had been shot.
"Deputies then called a SWAT team who entered the house and found a man and woman dead inside.
"Investigators said the dead man was an ex-husband of the woman, and the wounded man was also an ex-husband of the woman.
"According to investigators, the first ex-husband showed up to the home where his ex-wife, her 17 year old daughter and the other ex-husband were. "Harrisonburg, VA - The shooting last week on Old Furnace Road appears to be an attempted murder-suicide, according to an affidavit used to get multiple search warrants issued in the case. The shooting claimed the life of one man and seriously injured another.
"In the early morning hours of Dec. 11, Harrisonburg police officers responded to a shooting call at 1056 Old Furnace Road. After arriving, police found two people lying on the kitchen floor, according to the affidavit. The apartment's owner, who isn't identified, sustained multiple gunshot wounds. According to the affidavit, the second person, 'believed to be the suspect based on preliminary interviews,' was found with a gunshot wound to the head, which was 'consistent with being self inflicted.'
"The man who died about 12 hours after the shooting has been identified by police as Brian Wickliff, 47, of Harrisonburg. But police won't say whether they believe he or the wounded man, who police have not identified, was the shooter in the case. The wounded individual remains at the University of Virginia Medical Center in critical condition, according to the last update from police.
"The affidavit states that the home's front window was forcibly entered.
"In a search of the home, police seized several items, including shell casings and a bullet that was removed from a wall.
"During the search of the parking lot, police located a red Mitsubishi Eclipse, which was traced back to a resident at 95 Perry St. in Harrisonburg. Police believe that resident was the shooter, according to the affidavit."

Actress Bhargavi was found dead along with an associate Praveen, in her apartment in Banjara Hills in Hyderabad on Tuesday under suspicious circumstances. First hand evidences showed that she was stabbed to death by Praveen, who later committed suicide by consuming soft drink mixed with cyanide.

"Orange County sheriff's officials say the bodies of Justin Levens and his wife Sarah McLean-Levens were found Wednesday afternoon. The 28-year-old Levens competed in the Ultimate Fighting Championship and other fighting federations.
"Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino says the couple were found by the woman's mother, who called 911."
" Tallahassee, FL - Two people are confirmed dead after a shooting in Tallahassee. Police are still investigating the incident that took place at around 7:00 p.m. on Locke street, just off Meridian.
"According to Tallahassee Police, it was an apparent murder-suicide resulting from a domestic dispute. The male allegedly shot the female, and then shot himself. The man was dead on the scene and the woman was transported to the hospital where she later died.
"Officer David McCranie said, 'It was a 911 call and officers responded within a few minutes of the gunshots and when they arrived on scene, they found both the victim and suspect lying in the roadway.'
"Police have not yet confirmed the relationship between the man and woman..."

"A young man committed suicide after killing a girl he loved and the man she was allegedly having an affair with in the Baghbanpura on Wednesday.
"The victims have been identified as Sidra Siddique (22), a resident of Naqshibandi Bazaar and Najam Ali Qazi (35), a resident of Daroghawala, while the killer was identified as Advocate Noorulameen, who was also a resident of Naqshbandi Bazaar. Police officials said that Sidra was a student of class 10 class and had been taking extra classes at a local academy owned by Najam.
"The Bagbanpura Police station house officer (SHO) said that on the day of the incident Noorulamin had visited Najams house, where he ran his academy and was teaching Sidra at the time. He said that the assailant locked the door behind him and opened fire on Najam and Sirda, adding that Sidra received two bullets in her head and one in her chest, , while Najam was shot thrice in his side. The SHO said that after killing the two, Noorulameen shot himself in the head. The police seized a silenced pistol and a letter containing a suicide note explaining the reasons behind the killings from the scene. Police officials said that since the killer had used a silenced pistol, the crime was not discovered until one of Najam’s students visited his house. The student informed the authorities who removed the bodies to the morgue after reaching the scene."

"Howell, MI - They knew the two men fought, but never expected it to escalate into deadly gunplay.
"Five relatives sharing a home on Richardson Road with Gerald Hall and his nephew, Gregory Howell, had witnessed the pair arguing after drinking. The uncle and nephew had only been living together in an upper loft of the house since last week, after Hall was estranged from his wife and they had been known to argue.
"Late Monday, nearly five days after the men were last seen drinking, family members decided to check on them.
"Using a key to open the door in the loft somewhat separated from the rest of the house, they found a disturbing scene: Hall with a gunshot wound in the head, slipping in and out of consciousness, and his nephew's lifeless body with a six-shot revolver near his hand.
"Police are calling the incident an attempted murder-suicide plot."
