Long Distance Welfare Check

"Boise, ID - Early Monday morning, police received a request from out of state to perform a welfare check.

"Family members concerned that something bad may have happened to their loved ones and that's exactly what police found upon entering a townhouse in southeast Boise.

"`And they found an elderly woman deceased and they found an elderly man with some very critical, life-threatening injuries,` said Lynn Hightower, Boise Police spokesperson.

"The man was taken to the hospital where he later died.

"What happened is still unknown, but Hightower says the woman sustained suspicious injuries, although she won't say what caused the likely fatal wounds.

"`I can say that there is a weapon that detectives found on scene,` Hightower said.

"It's all quite shocking to neighbors, who never expected to wake up to police, paramedics, and even the coroner working at the house across the street.

"`They were very nice neighbors, very quiet, stayed to themselves. Just the type of neighbors you really enjoy having,` said Jack Logan.

"He also says he saw the man in question on Sunday.

"`I saw Bill walking his dog last night. I waved to him and as far as I knew everything seemed fine and dandy,` Logan said.

"But things for this couple may have been more difficult than many fully understood.

"`You have to be sympathetic to those folks. They were really in bad shape,` said Ralph Hansen.

"Hansen said the two were in failing health, and other neighbors living next door to the couple say the husband had developed Parkinson's disease, which made it hard to take care of his ailing wife.

"No Signs Of Violence" In Attempted Double Murder/Suicide

"Adelaide, Australia - Police will wait for toxicology results and an autopsy report before revealing what caused the death of a four-year-old boy in his Adelaide home.

"The boy was found dead in a bedroom of a house in Kensington Gardens, in Adelaide's eastern suburbs, at 7.40am (CST) on Monday, police said.

"Local media have labelled the incident a double murder suicide attempt, after the boy's 47-year-old mother and nine-year-old brother were taken to the Royal Adelaide Hospital in a critical condition.

"Detective Chief Inspector John Gerlach said the pair had suffered no obvious physical injuries and were in a serious but stable condition.

"`When they were taken to hospital they were passing in and out of consciousness,` he told reporters.

"Police spent several hours on Monday searching the house trying to find what the trio may have ingested.

"`We believe that medication may be involved,` Chief Inspector Gerlach said.

"Chief Inspector Gerlach said police were still waiting on toxicology reports, but that they believed no gases or dangerous chemicals were involved.

"An autopsy will be carried out on Tuesday to determine how the boy died.

"`Police are investigating the circumstances of the incident here to try and determine what happened, but what I can say is that there is no signs of violence in the house,` Chief Inspector Gerlach said.

"`The circumstances of the death are pretty much contained to the house and the people who live inside.`

"It is understood the father, who works in the pharmaceutical industry, discovered his wife and two sons in one of the bedrooms and immediately dialled triple zero.

"The father, who at this stage is not a suspect, attended a nearby police station on Monday morning to assist police with their inquiries.

"`Obviously it is a very difficult situation for him,` Chief Inspector Gerlach said.

"`They are always tragic circumstances, we don't like investigating these sorts of incidents, but it's something we have to do.`

Danse Class Macabre

"BRIDGEVILLE, PA - A gunman walked into a dance class in a Pittsburgh gym last night and opened fire with two weapons, killing four women and injuring at least nine others before shooting himself.

"The bald man, a member of the gym who was wearing a black bandanna, entered the LA fitness Centre in Collier Township shortly after 8pm, turned off the lights and began shooting, according to witnesses.

"`He did not say anything. He walked into the room as if he knew where he was going and pulled out the guns and began shooting,` said Charles Moffatt, an Allegheny County Police Superintendent.

"Joann Gazzam, a regular at the weekly Latin impact dance exercise class said a man came through the glass double doors at the exercise room's entrance.

"He walked to the back of the room near some weights and set down a bag, fumbling with it for a few minutes before coming up with what appeared to be two guns and began shooting.

"Investigators were trying to piece together a motive today, Mr Moffatt said police were not sure who the target of the shooting was but that the gunman went into the health club planning to shoot several people, firing multiple weapons indiscriminately.

"The violence has shocked Collier, a tiny commuter town of about 5,300 residents around eight miles southwest of central Pittsburgh.

Pair Survives Fiery Murder/Suicide Attempt

"Rochester, WA - A Rochester man tried to murder the woman he lived with early Friday morning by lighting a Littlerock Road home on fire and holding her down in the bedroom, court papers state.

"When the woman tried to flee and put the fire out, he struck her from behind several times with a golf club, according to court papers.

"The home in the 16000 block of Littlerock Road burned to the ground in the apparent attempted murder-suicide, Thurston County deputy prosecuting attorney Jennifer Lord said.

"The woman suffered a bruised back and serious burns to both of her hands, Lord said. The man she lived with as a roommate, Rodney Glenn Anthony, 45, was ordered held at the Thurston County Jail on Friday with bail set at $1 million.

"It was the second time this week that a Thurston County man was arrested on suspicion of trying to kill a woman in her home in an alleged domestic-violence incident. On July 23, a man tried to kill his estranged wife after sneaking in and hiding in the closet of her home in the Johnson Point Road area near Olympia.

"`It’s alarming to have two in one week,` Lord said outside court.

"Deputies arrived at the home after midnight Friday to find the home engulfed in flames. The woman who lived there said she had gone to sleep in her bedroom but awoke to find Anthony lying beside her, holding her arms tight against her body in what she called a `death grip.` She said she could smell smoke and hear smoke alarms going off as he told her, `We’re just going to lie here together and don’t worry.`

"She said she managed to get off the bed and went to the living room. Her computer desk had been lit on fire, and there was a gas can next to the desk. She said that as she tried to put the fire out, he struck her in the back with a golf club. She said he then tried to choke her. She later went onto the porch, but Anthony followed her and said, `I’m going to kill you and you can fight it if you want,` she said. He also told her, `My life is over; I’m going to end it all,` she said.

"The woman said Rodney didn’t show any emotions while he was assaulting her.

"All of the woman’s personal belongings were destroyed, including a car parked in the garage.

"Anthony fled in a vehicle that belongs to the woman after she escaped from the home. The woman was screaming and crying when she was approached by deputies outside, and she told them, `I can’t believe he did this; he tried to kill me.`

"She later said Anthony wanted to pursue a romantic relationship with her, but she refused. She said she `never saw any signs that Rodney would harm her.`"

Two Bodies But Only One Spent Round

"TUPELO, MS - Sheriff's investigators on Thursday were examining an apparent murder-suicide of a couple near Mooreville.

"Lee County Sheriff Jim Johnson said deputies arrived on County Road 878 near Mooreville at the home of Collin and Dana Cockrell about 8:30 a.m. and found both of them dead in an upstairs bedroom.

"Dana, 26, was on the bed and Collin, 29, was on the floor, according to Johnson. The two were married.

"Johnson said the shootings possibly happened about 4 a.m., and it was unclear who fired the shots.

"When Collin didn't show up for work at a pallet-making company in Nettleton, Johnson said, co-workers went to his home. After not getting an answer at the door, the sheriff's department was called.

"`The back door was open, so we went in,` said Johnson. `We found both bodies in an upstairs bedroom and we also found a weapon in the same room with one spent round. Those factors lead us to believe that this was a murder-suicide.`

"Johnson said there were no signs of forced entry at the home and nothing inside was disturbed."
