Two Dead After Protective Order Expires

"BOOSIER CITY, LA — Another local couple is dead after a husband gunned down his wife and then himself Tuesday.

"Bossier City police are investigating that city's second and the area's fourth murder-suicide of the year after two bodies were found in the parking lot of the First Baptist Church in the 2800 hundred block of East Texas Street about 5:45 p.m. Tuesday.

"Police and fire crews responded to calls of a shooting and found Allan Corby Haltom, 45, of Haughton, and his estranged wife, Angela Gaye Haltom, 44, both shot dead.

"Detectives believe Allan Haltom parked his car next to his wife's and waited for her to leave the church day care where she was employed. Detectives said he shot her while sitting in his vehicle and then shot himself.

"Church personnel told police no children were in the day care or parking lot at the time of the shooting.

"The day care will be closed today.

"The investigation is still ongoing, Bossier City spokesman Mark Natale said.

"Bossier Clerk of Court filings show that Angela Gaye Haltom filed divorce proceedings against her husband June 6 and three days later obtained a protective restraining order against him.

"The same filings showed that protective order expired Tuesday. She renewed the order, which was to have been in effect through Nov. 15.

"Tuesday's murder-suicide is the fourth in the Shreveport-Bossier City area this year. In every case, the husband murdered his wife before taking his own life."

Three Critical After Shootings, House Fire

"BEDFORD, VA — Investigators said loud music was the catalyst to Monday’s shooting and standoff that left a father and son in critical condition.

"The man charged in the shooting, Dennis Roy Caldwell, also remains hospitalized for injuries he received in the blaze that consumed his house while he remained inside, said Bedford County Sheriff Mike Brown on Friday.

"Dennis Caldwell, 55, is charged with two counts each of aggravated malicious wounding and use of a firearm in the commission of a felony, after investigators said he shot his brother, 61-year-old Glen Caldwell, and Glen Caldwell’s son, Michael, 35.

"After the shooting, investigators said Dennis Caldwell went into his house at 1497 Haven Heights Drive in Bedford, refused to come out for negotiators, and ultimately set his own house on fire.

"That’s when tactical team members and firefighters went into the house and found Dennis Caldwell in the basement in a semiconscious state.

"Dennis Caldwell remains under constant guard at the University of Virginia Medical Center, where he was taken for treatment for burns to his airway, Brown said. He was initially placed on a ventilator but has since started breathing on his own.

"The dispute between the two brothers had been going on for more than two years.

"Court records show not guilty verdicts against both men in December 2009 for noise violation complaints. In August 2010, a not guilty judgment was entered in another noise complaint filed against Dennis Caldwell by his brother Glen Caldwell.

"Then last February, court records show Dennis Caldwell accused his brother Glen of assault. Glen Caldwell was found not guilty in Bedford County Juvenile and Domestic Relations Court.

"Deputies initially responded to the shooting Monday just after 3:30 p.m. to find Glen and Michael Caldwell lying in the yard at 1497 Haven Heights Drive. They both had been shot more than once.

"Dennis Caldwell, investigators said, was inside his house when Deputy Allison Key arrive and was firing a weapon, though investigators said they are not sure if he was firing at Key. Brown said Dennis Caldwell was armed with a .45-caliber automatic handgun, a 20-gauge shotgun and `a large amount` of ammunition.

"Negotiators tried to talk Dennis Caldwell out of the house, but he refused, telling the negotiator he would burn his house down, and wanted to die before breaking off all communication."

"SCOTTSDALE, AZ — Scottsdale police say the deaths of a man and woman discovered shot dead outside the front door of a Scottsdale home were a result of a murder-suicide.

"The bodies were found Thursday morning outside a Scottsdale home near Mountain View and Hayden roads.

Man Charged After Botched Murder/Suicide

"DUCHESNE, UT — A Duchesne man accused of murder allegedly told detectives he stabbed his wife to death to euthanize her and then tried to kill himself.

"The body of Mary Ratliff, 82, was found in her home Aug. 13 after a family friend received a package containing $7,000 and a suicide note from Ratliff’s husband, Charles Edward Dodd, according to murder charge filed in 8th District Court on Wednesday.

"Previously, the friend said, Dodd, 75, had been depressed and told her that `the end will come,` according to other court documents.

"Ratliff was found lying on a hospital-type bed, with a puncture wound to her chest, deputies wrote. Dodd was found unconscious in a chair in the same room. He also had a puncture wound to his chest and a cut on the back of his head, investigators wrote. A bloody hunting knife was on the table next to Ratliff’s bed.

"Dodd was taken by ambulance to the Uintah Basin Medical Center and was later flown to a Salt Lake City hospital.

"After he regained consciousness, Dodd told investigators that his wife was in constant pain, and the couple several times had discussed `ending it,` the charge states. Ratliff’s ailment is not described. Dodd said he left money for their burial along with the suicide note at their friend’s office and returned to the couple’s home, investigators wrote.

"Dodd said he waited until Ratliff was `semi asleep` and stabbed her where he thought her heart was, deputies wrote. Ratliff did not die immediately, so he stabbed her again, the charge states.

"After Ratliff died, Dodd swallowed a handful of pills, held the knife to his chest and used the wall to push the knife into his body, police wrote. He said the next thing he remembered was waking in the hospital.

"Dodd was charged with one first-degree felony charge of murder."

One Dead, One Injured After Workplace Dispute

"BEDMINSTER, NJ — The two groundskeepers worked together on the same rolling fairways, buzzcut greens and sandy bunkers at the upscale country club in Bedminster.

"But a work-related dispute between the two seasonal laborers turned bloody at Fiddler’s Elbow Country Club yesterday, said Somerset County Geoffrey D. Soriano.

"As related by Soriano, the episode began when Francisco Jimenez, a 59-year-old Orange resident, was waiting at the club entrance when his fellow groundskeeper arrived for work about 5 a.m., riding in the passenger’s seat of a car.

"Jimenez flagged down the vehicle, walked to the side where his coworker sat and fired a gun twice into the man’s upper body, Soriano said. The driver floored the accelerator to get away, as Jimenez fled in his own car.

"About 90 minutes later, as detectives closed in on Jimenez’s residence in Orange some 30 miles away, they were confronted with an unexpected end to their pursuit about 6:45 a.m.

"In front of Monte Irvin Park just down the street from his home, Jimenez had shot himself to death, with what detectives believe to be the same gun, according to Soriano’s office. His body lay in the gutter, said an eyewitness.

"The wounded groundskeeper—identified only as a 37-year-old Plainfield man—was taken to an unspecified hospital where he remained in critical condition yesterday, said Capt. Jack Bennett, a Somerset County Prosecutor’s spokesman."

Father And Daughter, 3, Found Dead

"LONGMONT, CO — Police suspect a 38-year-old man shot and killed his 3-year-old daughter and then committed suicide this weekend in his Longmont home at 1260 Red Mountain Drive, according to Cmdr. Jeff Satur.

"Two Longmont police officers found the man and child apparently shot dead in the master bedroom of the home Sunday after they went inside to check on the father and daughter's welfare.

"Satur said the man's wife, from whom he is separated, had gone to the home with her teenage son Sunday after a camping trip to pick up the child, who had been dropped off with her father Friday to spend the weekend. The teen and his mother were unable to get anyone to answer the door and could not get the garage door opener to work. They suspected that the power was out and called police when they became increasingly worried about the situation, according to a search warrant for the home.

"The woman told police she had moved out of the home in June and that she had been unable to reach her husband on his cellphone, which was unusual. She added that he had been making `weird` entries on Facebook recently.

"Satur said the man's wife told investigators that he had previously attempted suicide, but police do not have a significant call history to the home. According to the search warrant, investigators discovered that Heydenburg's vehicle had recently been repossessed.

"The Boulder County Coroner is working to determine the official cause and manner of death, and the official release of the identities of the man and child will be withheld until the coroner confirms the identities and notifies next of kin."
