Bodies Found After Call To Police


"GREAT FALLS, MT — The Great Falls Police Department has confirmed that the deaths of Bryan Smith, 43, and Suzanne Roberts, 36, were the result of murder-suicide.

"In a press release, the GFPD says that at some point on Friday, February 24th, Smith shot Roberts twice in the head as she was sleeping in her bed; Smith then went into another room in the house and shot himself in the head.

"Their bodies were found on the afternoon of Monday, February 27th, after Roberts' sister called the police, saying she had not heard from Roberts in a few days.

"Police found the bodies at the home shortly after that phone call."

Domestic Situation Leaves One Dead, One Hospitalized


"PORTSMOUTH, VA — Police investigating a double shooting in Portsmouth Wednesday morning say it stemmed from a domestic situation.

"Officers responded to the area of 5 Canoe Court around 5:30 a.m. after receiving several calls about gunshots.

"They found 41-year-old Loring Larry Walker, of 3600 Gateway Drive in Portsmouth, dead inside the home.

"A woman was transported to Sentara Norfolk General Hospital with gunshot wounds to her abdomen and lower body. She is in stable condition, according to Jan Westerbeck with Portsmouth Police.

"Westerbeck said detectives learned Walker entered the home and allegedly shot the woman, before shooting himself.

"The investigation is ongoing."

Family Killer Found Dead In Vegas Hotel Room


"OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — A man whose wife and daughter were found dead in an Oklahoma City home Tuesday, has been found dead in a Las Vegas hotel room, according to police.

"Police say Tara Johnston, 29, and her daughter, Allison Johnston, 17 months, were found dead in their home in the 12700 block of Teakwood Road on Tuesday.

"Police also say Tara Johnston’s husband husband, Daniel Johnston, was found dead in a Las Vegas hotel room late Tuesday night. Police say Daniel Johnston's death appears to be a suicide. Investigators say they believe Daniel Johnston killed his wife and daughter before flying to Las Vegas on Sunday.

"`We found out it was child involved. How an adult or anyone could harm a child is unbelievable to us,` said neighbor Allen Fielder.

"The medical examiner will determine the cause of death for Tara Johnston and Allison Johnston."

Suspect In Double Murder Kills Himself After Standoff With Police


"LAKE HARMONY, PA — State police at Fern Ridge said a Jim Thorpe man who shot and killed himself after being chased by police Saturday night is the only person suspected in the homicides of his grandmother and step-grandfather in Kidder Township.

"Greg Demage, 30, shot and killed himself in a Cadillac in Coal Township. The vehicle was missing from the Kidder Township murder scene, police said.

"Both John Carnochan, 77, and Mildred Carnochan, 75, of Lake Harmony, were found dead inside a home at 33 Wolf Hollow Drive, Split Rock Resort, Kidder Township, on Saturday after township police were called to the address to check on the welfare of the couple around noon.

"Both deaths were determined to be homicides after autopsies were performed Monday. Mildred Carnochan was killed by blunt and sharp force trauma to the head and chest, while John Carnochan was killed by multiple blunt force trauma and stab wounds, state police at Fern Ridge said.

"At 7:30 p.m. Saturday, troopers at Fern Ridge asked state police at Stonington to check a home in Snydertown in relation to the homicide investigation when troopers saw the vehicle missing from the murder scene and attempted to stop it. The driver, later identified as Demage, fled from police and about 20 minutes later, Ralpho Township police saw the vehicle and pursued it, along with other police departments.

"After spike strips were deployed the vehicle was stopped on state Route 61 in Coal Township, where Demage shot and killed himself after a brief standoff with officers, police wrote."

"MONTROSE, CO — A 20-year-old Montrose woman who was slain Saturday night in the front yard of a Montrose home was shot multiple times, Montrose County Coroner Dr. Thomas Canfield said today.

"The death of Charity Kay Gilbert has been ruled homicide, while her assailant, Randy Charles Briggs, 31, died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound, according to Canfield.

"Montrose Police Cmdr. Gene Lillard told The Daily Sentinel on Monday officers responding to a report around 8:06 p.m. of shots fired at 833 South Forty Road, came across a dead adult man and woman in the front yard, adjacent to a shotgun. Randy Briggs and his wife, Patricia, owned the South Forty home."

Couple Found Dead In Minivan


"INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Two shooting deaths in in a minivan parked at an industrial plant on the Southwestside appear to be a murder-suicide, police say.

"The victims were a 46-year-old man, who is believed to be the shooter, and a 42-year-old woman, according to an Indianapolis Metropolitan Police report.

"They were found in a 2003 gold Chevrolet Astro van.

"Independent Concrete Pipe Chief Executive Officer Scott Bundrant said two bodies were found in a van in the employee parking lot.

"He said an employee arriving at work at 7:30 a.m. noticed the van, peeked inside and made the discovery.

"Bundrant said the victims were not employees of the company at 2050 South Harding St.

"He said most of the grounds at the concrete pipe-making faculty are fenced off but the employee parking lot is accessible to any motorist.

"Bundrant said the first employees arrive at 5:30 a.m. but they didn’t investigate the van."

One Dead, One Critical After Kwik Mart Shooting


"WARSAW, IN — One person is dead and another is in critical condition in a Fort Wayne hospital after early morning shootings in Kosciusko County.

"Kosciusko County sheriff's deputies responded to a 5:38 a.m. call about a shooting that had just occurred at the Katie's Kwik Mart gas and convenience store at 100 N. Main St., Leesburg. Witnesses told sheriff's officers and detectives that a woman ran from her vehicle into the store frantically asking for help from the store clerk. The woman ran behind the counter area as a man ran into the business, chasing her and brandishing a handgun.

"The man could not get behind the secure counter area and fired one round from the handgun over the counter, striking the woman in the shoulder and then fled the store, the sheriff's department said.

"Witnesses described the fleeing vehicle as a red pickup truck to police who were converging on the area. Shortly afterward, a Warsaw police officer located the vehicle at the north end of an empty parking lot on the Warsaw Ivy Tech campus, at U.S. 30 and Silveus Crossing.

"As officers approached the vehicle, they discovered the driver was dead from a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, the department said in a written statement.

"The woman was flown from the scene to Parkview Memorial Hospital in Fort Wayne in critical condition, the sheriff's department said."

Deadly End To "Perfect Relationship"


"MOUNT PLEASANT, SC — The fiance of a missing South Carolina woman was seen leaving the woods where her SUV was found carrying a shovel, police say.

"Witnesses positively identified David Hedrick, 34, as leaving the woodland where Dara Lee Watson's burnt out SUV was found, police told a news conference yesterday.

"Hedrick committed suicide by shooting himself in their Mount Pleasant, South Carolina home on Friday, hours after his 30-year-old accountant girlfriend was reported missing.

"Friends said the couple had 'the perfect relationship'.

"The pretty brunette was last seen by her mother on February 6. Watson's boss and sister both received text messages from her on February 8, although police now believe they were sent by Hedrick, WCBD TV reported.

"On Monday, locals reported what appeared to be fresh digging about 10 miles from the scene where Watson's SUV was found.

"A forensic team are investigating, but police told the local station that the uprooted soil seems to be unrelated to Watson's disappearance.

"Police found Hedrick dead from a self-inflicted gunshot on Saturday at 12.45 a.m. He had previously told Mount Pleasant police officers the pair had argued on Monday night and Watson had left their home on Tuesday morning.

"Charleston County Coroner, Rae Wooten, confirmed during a news conference yesterday that David Hedrick's death was a suicide.

"He did not leave a suicide note and police believe he took knowledge of Dara's whereabouts with him when he died."

Killer Kisses Mom Goodbye Before Shooting Himself


"EUTAWVILLE, SC — Orangeburg County Sheriff's deputies are investigating a murder-suicide in Eutawville Saturday night.

"Sheriff Leroy Ravenell says deputies were first called to Strick's One Stop on Old Number Six Highway at about 6:23 p.m. after an employee reported seeing a woman shot. The employee told investigators they heard a gunshot, saw a woman fall to the ground, and a pickup truck quickly leaving the scene.

"The Orangeburg County Coroner identified the woman as 42 year old Anngenette Shaw of Eutawville.

"At about 6:31 Saturday night, deputies were called to Oilers Drive, less than a mile and a half away, for a report of a suicide. The County Coroner says the man was 53 year old Kenneth Burch.

"Sheriff Ravenell says after shooting Shaw, Burch drove to his mother's house, which is next door to his own home, and kissed her. Burch then returned to his home and shot himself.

"Coroner Samuetta Marshall conducted autopsies on Shaw and Burch today, but she could not release any additional information."

"HOUSTON, TX — Police say a father shot his two children and their mother in southwest Houston. He then killed himself.

"It happened around 1:15pm at an apartment in the 6100 block of Reims Road near Fondren and Harwin.

"According to officers at the scene, the man's body was found outside the apartment with a gunshot wound to the head.

"The gunman, 47, and his 12-year-old daughter were pronounced dead at the scene.

"The mother and a 14-year-old daughter have been transported to Ben Taub General Hospital. Both are in critical condition.

"The 14-year-old girl was shot in the neck and was in surgery at last check, but her injuries are life-threatening.

"Police said the mother, 43, was shot in the back and is paralyzed but communicating. She was able to call 9-1-1 and tell the dispatcher she was shot and believed her children had been shot as well. Police hope to get a statement from her soon.

"Investigators recovered a semi-automatic handgun at the scene."

One Cop Dead, One Cop Injured In Botched Murder/Suicide


"BEVERLY, MA — A Hamilton Police Sergeant was found dead on Friday night after he became the main suspect in the shooting of another police officer.

"Beverly Police were called to Enon Street before 6 p.m. on Friday after reports of a person being shot near the Eastern Bank. When they arrived, they found off-duty Beverly Police Officer Jason Lantych suffering from serious injuries outside of Starbucks.

"In a Friday night press conference, Essex District Attorney Jonathan Blodgett alleged that Hamilton Police Sergeant Ken Nagy shot off-duty Beverly officer Jason Lantych and then fled the scene. He asked for the public's help finding Nagy, calling the police sergeant armed and dangerous.

"The shooting prompted a statewide manhunt for Nagy which eventually ended back at the scene. Nagy was found dead inside his car just before 11 p.m. Friday night. The Essex District Attorney's office confirmed Nagy died in an apparent suicide.

"Investigators do believe Nagy and Lantych knew each other, but would not comment on details surrounding the altercation.

"Lantych underwent surgery on Friday night. His condition is unknown."

Mom, Kids Dead In Double Murder/Suicide


"JACKSONVILLE, FL — St. Johns County Sheriff David Shoar says preliminary findings of a triple homicide investigation finds that a Julington Creek woman killed her two sons and herself inside their home on Thursday.

"Donna McCulloch, 40, Daniel Rashley, 8, and William (Ben) Rashley, 7, were found shot to death in the home on Loveland Place about 4:30 p.m. Shoar said it was McCulloch's parents who discovered the body and found the bodies.

"While no suicide note was found, Shoar said all evidence points to this being a double-murder and suicide.

"`Needless to say, desperation was, I'm sure, a part of it,` Shoar said in a Friday briefing. `The truth is, we're not 100 percent sure what was going through her mind.`

"McCulloch had been confined to a wheelchair since a June 2010 car crash and also went through a contentious divorce that year."

"COLORADO SPRINGS, CO — A southeast Colorado Springs man apparently fatally shot his wife and then shot himself Tuesday evening, according to the findings of the El Paso County coroner's office.

"The autopy report released Friday determined the double shooting at 9108 Chieftain Drive was a murder-suicide and identified Jeffrey Lawrence, 29, and Tara Buckler, 27, as the victims.

"Both Lawrence and Buckler died of gunshot wounds to the head, the report said, indicating Buckler's death was ruled a homicide and Lawrence's a suicide.

"Lawrence and Buckler were found dead at the home when the Sheriff's office responded to call just after 6 p.m. Tuesday, Sgt. Mike Schaller, an El Paso County Sheriff's spokesman said.

"Sheriff's deputies also found three children, age 10 and under, waiting outside the house when they arrived. The children were not harmed and are staying with a relative, according to the Sheriff's office."

Cop Killer Shoots Himself As SWAT Closes In


"PORT ORCHARD, WA — A suspect in the shooting death of a Washington State trooper during a traffic stop early Thursday fatally shot himself hours later as a SWAT team closed in, authorities said.

"Joshua Jearl Blake was the registered owner of a pickup truck that Trooper Tony Radulescu pulled over just before he was shot to death, and the ex-con was also known to law enforcement in the area for meth convictions, assaulting the mother of one of his children and kicking out the window of a police car, authorities said.

"Investigators tracked Blake to a home near Port Orchard where he shot himself as a SWAT team closed in. He was taken to Tacoma General Hospital, where the Kitsap County Sheriff's Office says he died.

"Radulescu stopped the truck around 1 a.m. on Highway 16 near Gorst, about 20 miles west of Seattle across Puget Sound. He had radioed the location and license plate number, said Trooper Russ Winger.

"When Radulescu didn't respond to dispatcher status checks, a Kitsap County sheriff's deputy went to the scene and found the fatally wounded trooper outside his patrol car. He was taken to St. Joseph Medical Center in Tacoma where he was declared dead.

"Three hours later, officers found the truck abandoned on a county road near Port Orchard, about two miles from the shooting scene.

"Investigators received a tip on where to find the registered owner and went to the home.

"`As our SWAT team made their approach they heard a single gunshot,` Kitsap County sheriff's Sgt. Ken Dickinson said. `They found a male subject with a single gunshot wound.`"

"The Amarillo Police Department says preliminary autopsy results show Carolyn Norrid died after being shot several times.

"UPPER DARBY, PA — After receiving a cryptic call from his father Wednesday afternoon, a young man rushed home to find his parents unconscious in their bed with scarves tied tightly around their necks.

"His mother was pronounced dead at the scene and his father was clinging to life at Delaware County Memorial Hospital after being placed in a medically induced coma, according to Upper Darby police Superintendent Michael Chitwood.

"Police were investigating the incident as a possible murder-suicide attempt.

"`One of the sons was driving a cab in Philadelphia when he got a call at around 1:15 from his father telling him to come home right away,` Chitwood said. `His voice was garbled and he sounded like he was in some type of distress.

"`When he gets home, he finds his mom and dad in bed, fully clothed with scarves tied tightly around their necks. They both appeared to be dead. He took the scarves off and called 911.`

"When paramedics arrived, they found the father still had a pulse and transported him to Delaware County Memorial Hospital.

"The couple had lived at the corner of Winfield and Miller avenues for more than five years, according to neighbors.

"Police did not release their names, but the owners of the home identified the man as Gurinder Singh, who was still listed in critical condition as of 10:15 p.m. Wednesday.

"An autopsy is expected to be performed on his 47-year-old wife either Thursday or Friday, according to the Delaware County Medical Examiner’s office."

"DINWIDDIE, VA — A 32-year-old Petersburg man fatally shot himself in the chest in front of the Wal-Mart Distribution Center yesterday after wounding his female supervisor and opening fire on deputies, authorities said.

"The man, a nine-year employee at the facility, left for his lunch break and returned with a handgun, according to Dinwiddie Sheriff D.T. `Duck` Adams. Adams said that the man, whose identity has not yet been released, walked straight to the shipping department in the rear of the center and shot the victim in her leg.

"The victim, a 40-year-old Petersburg resident who has worked at the center for 18 years, was not critically wounded.

"`Right now we have no motive,` Adams said during a press conference Wednesday.

"He declined to comment on the nature of the relationship between the shooter and the victim, citing an ongoing investigation. Adams did say that there were witnesses to both incidents. The center is monitored by closed-circuit television, which a Wal-Mart spokesman said usually covers the interior and exterior of the facility.

"The Sheriff's Office was called to the scene of the initial shooting at 12:09 p.m. Deputies arrived three minutes later to find the suspect standing at the employee entrance, holding a gun. The suspect shot twice at law enforcement officers, who had taken cover behind parked vehicles, before turning the gun on himself."

SWAT Standoff Ends With Killer's Suicide


"PORT ANGELES, WA — A five-hour standoff between law enforcement officers, including a State Patrol SWAT team, and suspected double-killer John F. Loring ended Wednesday when Loring shot himself with a handgun in an apartment bathroom, law enforcement authorities said.

"Loring, 45 and homeless, was suspected of killing David J. Randle, 19, on Tuesday morning with a handgun at a Woodcock Road home near Meyer Andrew Lane in the unincorporated Dungeness district north of Sequim.

"Loring also was suspected of murder in the death of Ray Varney, 68, whose body was found Wednesday in the Diamond Point area 10 miles east of where Randle was killed.

"The standoff began at about 6:30 a.m. Wednesday at the federally subsidized low-income Evergreen Court Apartments, 2202 W. 16th St. in Port Angeles.

"It ended when Loring shot himself in the head at about noon, Clallam County Sheriff Bill Benedict said.

"Loring, a convicted felon, apparently shot himself after tear gas was lobbed into the apartment, while the complex was surrounded by heavily armed officers."

102 Year Old Shoots Wife, 84, Before Killing Himself


"GREENSBORO, NC — Police are investigating the death of a man this morning in a home near Lake Jeannette.

"It appears that the man, 102, shot his wife, 84, before shooting himself.

"At around 7:26 a.m, Greensboro police said officers responded to a 911 call of shots fired at a single-family residence at 5007 Cobbler Ridge Court.

"Police discovered Gloria Laurette Larkin suffering from gunshot wounds. She was transported by EMS to Moses Cone Hospital, where her condition is described as not life-threatening.

"Her husband, Theodore Delano Larkin Jr. was also in the home. He was pronounced dead of an apparent self-inflicted gunshot.

"The motive for the shooting is unknown.

"No one else was involved in the incident, and detectives are still investigating it."

Police Suspect Murder/Suicide In Deaths Of Mother & Son


"CRYSTAL SPRINGS, MS — Police believe Jason Bailey killed his mother.

"Authorities found Bailey's body inside a home on Lee Avenue on Saturday. They say his body was badly decomposed and was on the couch. They believe he had been dead for almost a week. On Tuesday, police found the body his mother, Judy Greer, 62, in a shallow grave behind the home. Authorities say both mother and son lived in that home. They believe Greer had been dead for no more than three weeks.

"Detective Chris Palmer says the pair had a history of domestic abuse. He says police have been called out to the home at least four times in the past year. Palmer says Greer never followed through on the complaints and always ended up dropping the domestic violence charges against his mother. Since 1996, Bailey has been in and out of jail on burglary and drug possession convictions. He was last released in December 2006.

"Authorities say they are waiting for autopsy reports for an official cause of death. They say there was no trauma to any of the bodies. They are now waiting for toxicology reports which they hope to have within the next week."

"PORT ST. LUCIE, FL — Port St. Lucie Police say Mikhail Sergatiouk rode his motor scooter all the way from Broward County to the residence of Aleksandr Gorbach on Saturday, cut a hole in a screened enclosure and hid out, waiting for the right moment with a sawed-off shotgun in hand.

"Gorbach, the victim was in the kitchen cleaning fish when the family heard a loud bang and glass breaking. His wife and three young children saw him fall to the ground with a major chest wound, police report. He was dead by the time he made it to the hospital.

"Gorbach died from a single shotgun wound to the chest. Sergatiouk fled on his scooter back to Broward County, where police say he confessed to his wife and child that he had just killed his business partner, Aleksandr Gorbach.

"The suspect's family called police and Sergatiouk was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head Monday morning next to Sample Road in Coral Springs. Police say he used the same sawed-off shotgun.

"According to the arrest affadavit, the Gorbach family had serious financial problems and their home was in foreclosure. Gorbach's wife told police that Sergatiouk and Gorbach had a business relationship that fell apart. Sergatiouk's family confirmed that he had lost a large sum of money in the business failure. Police confirmed the pair owned Bauer Comfort USA."

Deadly Separation


"MONTICELLO, IN — A man shot and killed his girlfriend at their Monticello residence before killing himself, White County Sheriff Pat Shafer said Tuesday.

"Michael Bell, 47, shot Heather Taylor, 38, in the home they shared sometime late Monday or early Tuesday, the sheriff said. The two were `going through a separation,` he said.

"The sheriff’s department had released a news release Tuesday saying that two bodies had been found in a residence at 1178 Saddlebrook Court.

"Shafer said Taylor had talked to a friend Monday night, but when that friend did not hear back from her that evening or the next morning, she called police. The White County Communications Center received a request for a welfare check at 9:39 a.m. Tuesday.

"Officers from the sheriff’s department and Monticello Police Department responded to the residence and forced entry into the home. They found both dead in the bedroom.

"`Based on evidence recovered from the scene, information from family and friends and the results of an autopsy, it appears to be a murder-suicide,` Shafer said.

"He said Bell shot Taylor once with a handgun before shooting himself once.

"Police did not recover any kind of note related to the shooting, and Bell did not have a prior criminal history, Shafer said. The sheriff said `it’s hard to say` whether Taylor was asleep when she was shot."

"MAPLETON, IL — A husband and wife died of an apparent murder-suicide Tuesday night in their home.

"Emmett, 67, and Rebecca Ledbetter, 52, of 6702 S. Harkers Corner Road were pronounced dead at 7:45 p.m. in their home, according to Peoria County Coroner Johnna Ingersoll. Both appeared to have died from gunshot wounds, though autopsies will not be performed until Thursday.

"Rebecca Ledbetter called police at 6:23 p.m. saying her husband had a gun. When police arrived to the home, both were found dead in the living area of the home.

"Relatives of Rebecca Ledbetter had met with her earlier in the afternoon and have told authorities nothing seemed out of the ordinary. Family members also said the couple did not have a history of domestic violence.

"`Family members are very much in shock that this occurred,` Ingersoll said."

"SACRAMENTO, CA — Two men are dead after a murder-suicide shooting in a parking lot outside a SMUD building Tuesday night.

"Two men got into a verbal argument in the parking of the SMUD building on the 6200 block of S Street around 7:20 p.m. when one man shot and killed the other, Sacramento Police Sgt. Andrew Pettit said.

"A woman who was standing near the two men was then chased by the gunman, according to Pettit.

"`The suspect shot the male victim and he was pronounced deceased. After he shot that victim he chased the female toward the lobby area firing multiple shots at her. The female was able to get inside the lobby area where he continued to shoot rounds, breaking the glass windows and also shooting into the lobby,` Pettit said.

"A friend of the man tried to calm him down, but moments later the man went back into the parking lot and shot himself in the upper torso, at least once, and killed himself, Pettit said.

"The two men, who had a history of conflict, and at least one of them was apparently part of a group of model plane enthusiasts that regularly meets at the building, a witness said.

"Homicide detectives are trying to find out what led up the shooting, Pettit said.

"No one else was injured in the shooting."

Five Dead In Sauna Slaughter


"NORCROSS, GA — Five people were fatally shot in an apparent murder-suicide at a health spa in Norcross on Tuesday night, according to police.

"Authorities responded a 911 call at the Su Jung Health Sauna on the 6000 block of Buford Highway around 9 p.m.

"Five people were found dead, according to Norcross Police Chief Warren Summers. One firearm was recovered, Summers said.

"The shooting remained under investigation late Tuesday. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation was aiding the Norcross Police Department.

"Police were talking to witnesses trying to determine a motive.

"No other details were immediately available."

Idaho State Police Investigate Murder/Suicide


"PINEHURST, ID — Two people have died in what authorities are investigating as a murder-suicide, possibly involving a father and son, early Sunday morning in Pinehurst, Idaho.

"At 2:44 a.m. Sunday morning a 911 caller reported a potential shooting at a home located on 5th Street in Pinehurst.

"When they got to the home police found the bodies of Steven Gravelle, 61, and 19-year-old Gabe Gravelle. Shoshone County Prosecutor Keisha Oxendine said she believes the Gravelles are father and son.

"Authorities wouldn't confirm if the shooting happened inside the home nor would they confirm whether or not the home was owned by Steven Gravelle. There is a home on 5th Street with a sign outside with the word Gravelle's on it.

"The Idaho State Police has taken over the shooting investigation and are investigating it as a possible murder-suicide.

"Autopsies on the two men are scheduled for this week."

1 Dead, 1 Critical After Pizza Hut Shooting


"DECATUR, GA — DeKalb County police are piecing together details in a shooting Saturday inside a south DeKalb Pizza Hut that left an employee in critical condition and the alleged shooter dead from suicide.

"Joshua McColle, an ex-boyfriend of an employee at the restaurant on Covington Highway, pulled out a gun after getting into a fight with another employee at about noon Saturday, according to Channel 2 Action News.

"Samuel Wallace, 32, was shot twice and taken to the hospital in critical condition, police said. McColley's ex-girlfriend told police that the gunman demanded the eatery's security video but jumped away when customers arrived. He then went into the back of the store and shot himself."

"CLEVELAND, OH — A tragic end to the desperate search for a young mother and her baby who were kidnapped at gunpoint on the city’s east side Saturday morning.

"Cleveland Police Sgt.Sammy Morris says 19-year-old Latasha Jackson and her 1-year-old daughter, Chaniya Wynn, were found with alleged kidnapper, 35-year-old Thomas Lorde, in a closed garage of an unoccupied structure on Union Avenue.

"All were found unresponsive with gunshot wounds to the head around 3 a.m. Sunday.
Police say that Lorde’s injury was caused by a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

"The Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner’s Office will determine the official cause of death for all three individuals.

"According to CPD, Jackson and her daughter were taken at gunpoint by her estranged boyfriend from East 72nd Street and Union Avenue, at approximately 11:44 a.m. Saturday. They were last seen walking south down East 72nd Street.

"An Amber Alert had been issued for Jackson and her daughter Saturday.

"At a news conference late Saturday, Cleveland Police Chief Michael McGrath said the suspect, 35-year-old Thomas Lorde, was a violent sexual predator with an `extensive criminal history` in numerous states."

"HOLLYWOOD, CA — Police say a shooting rampage and subsequent fire at a home in East Hollywood was likely the result of a domestic dispute.

"Two people, an unidentified man and the suspected gunman, were found dead inside the burned home in the 500 block of North Harvard Boulevard.

"Police say the suspected gunman also suffered a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"Three shooting victims were rescued from the nearly 100-year-old home, which was subsequently engulfed by a fast-moving fire.

"It all began when LAPD officers and Los Angeles Firefighters responded to a reported shooting at 12:41 p.m. Thursday.

"The LAPD assumed the shooter was inside, but they did not know if he was hiding.

"Firefighters put on bulletproof vests, and police then escorted them inside the home for what is known as a "rapid extraction" of victims.

"They rescued three people, a 34-year-old man and two 38-year-old women, from the front entry area of the house.

"Newlyweds Laurel and Daniel Choy shared the house with three other people.

"Laurel was shot four times in the chest and once in hand.

"She is now listed in stable condition at County USC Medical Center.

"Her husband, Daniel, was not home at the time.

"38-year-old Shaunna Heth, the possible target of the gunman, was also shot. She is reportedly the suspect's ex-girlfriend.

"The fire was allowed to burn itself out, after authorities determined the flames were too big and too hot for anyone else to have survived.

"Hose lines were placed on each side of the home, as were armed LAPD Officers to protect firefighters.

"The fire was extinguished after about 2 hours and 30 minutes.

"One neighbor said she saw a young man with a ponytail, dressed in black, wearing a hooded sweatshirt and carrying a duffel bag.

"He banged on the door of the house and then went inside, she said. She heard gunshots shortly after.

"The fire and shooting prompted the evacuation of Harvard Elementary School as well several nearby homes.

"There were no reported injuries to LAFD or LAPD personnel."

"BENNETTSVILLE, SC — Two people died in an apparent homicide/suicide Saturday at an SC 79 residence outside Bennettsville.

"A final ruling on the deaths is pending autopsies scheduled for Sunday and a complete investigation by the Marlboro County Sheirff's Office and Coroner's Office with assistance from the South Carolina State Law Enforcement Division.

"Marlboro County Coroner Tim Brown identified the victims as Bill Griffen, 61, and Rebecca Broadwater, 43—both of Marlboro County.

"Broadwater was likely the victim of a homicide, Griffen the victim of a suicide, Brown said.

"Brown said the two were not family but didn't couldn't speak to their relationship."

Bodies Of Elderly Couple Found In Burning Vehicle


"SPRINGVILLE, CA — Investigators with the Tulare County Sheriff’s Department have deemed the death of an elderly couple from the Springville area as a murder-suicide with a firearm.

"The couple, yet to be identified, was located dead inside a burning vehicle Thursday afternoon, on Yokohl Valley Drive near Balch Park Road, about 6 miles north of Springville.

"According to a news release issued late Friday afternoon, the male subject was identified as having used the firearm.

"The investigation also revealed the couple had health issues, the news release states.

"Autopsies to confirm what authorities are calling preliminary findings, will be conducted early next week.

"The couple’s identities are being withheld until verified and until family is notified.

"Deputies were initially dispatched Thursday for reports of an alarm call and traffic collision."

"FREMONT, NE — A woman is in the hospital and a manhunt is over after witnesses say, the suspected gunman was found dead from a self-inflicted gunshot after an alleged domestic dispute.

"Witnesses say the two involved were in a relationship.

"Police say the suspect shot the woman in the face and fled the scene. She was taken to the hospital. No other information has been released on her condition.

Botched Suicide Pact Follows Murder


"MIDWEST CITY, OK — A man arrested Wednesday in the death of a Midwest City woman made a suicide pact with his girlfriend after slaying Violet Hemphill, 64, police said Wednesday.

"Hemphill died from multiple sharp force injuries to the head and chest, the state medical examiner said Wednesday. Her death was ruled a homicide.

"Phillip Michael Potts, 23, was arrested on a murder complaint after being released from the hospital Tuesday, according to a new release from Midwest City police. He is Hemphill's nephew.

"Potts and his 22-year-old girlfriend had been staying with his aunt for several days before the killing, according to police.

"The two were found unconscious at Hemphill's home in the 1000 block of Holly Lane about 5:30 p.m. Monday after a relative went to the home to make a welfare check and noticed a strong odor of natural gas.

"Police broke down the door and made a bizarre discovery: Hemphill dead in one bedroom and Potts and his girlfriend nude and unconscious in another."

"James Price, 73, and Darlene Price, 83, were found dead in the kitchen area of their home at 122 S. 11th St. after police responded to a 9-1-1 call that came in at 6:18 p.m., Putnam County Sheriff Kevin Doyle said in a news release.

"`Darlene Price received a single gunshot wound from James Price. James Price died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound,` the release said. `Both subjects were pronounced dead by the Putnam County death investigator at 7:36 p.m.`

"James Price was a retired ironworker who had received a local `Citizen of the Year` award because of his volunteer activities for the community."

"KATY, TX — The Harris County Sheriff's Office Homicide Unit is investigating a murder-suicide that occurred at a Katy area hotel this weekend.

"Deputies were dispatched at approximately 11:50 a.m. Saturday to the Palace Inn in the 21300 block of Katy Freeway near Grand Parkway in reference to a 9-1-1 call regarding a deceased male and female.

"`Upon arrival, they met with the hotel manager, who told deputies that he was checking rooms on guests who had not checked out when he discovered a male and female deceased in one of the rooms,` a statement from the sheriff's office said.

"`Deputies were directed to the room and discovered a 28-year-old female deceased from several gunshot wounds. They also discovered a 29-year-old deceased male with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound.`

"The homicide unit was called to the scene to conduct the investigation.

"`The preliminary investigation has revealed that the 29-year-old male shot his female companion before turning the gun on himself,` the statement said.

"`No motive for shooting has been determined, and the investigation is ongoing.`

"Identification of the two deceased is pending autopsy report performed by the Harris County Institute of Forensic Sciences."

"A second victim identified as John Caffrey, 48, of Indianapolis, was found outside the home suffering from a single gunshot wound. He was located on the outside of the residence and was pronounced deceased on the scene by EMS crews.

"Investigators believe that the two victims have been mutual friends for a long period of time, and they may have been involved in an on-going dispute.

"Investigators preliminarily believe that John Caffrey entered the house of Derek Tully and shot him. John then exited the house and then apparently shot himself.

"The Marion County Crime Lab has recovered the weapon and no other injuries were reported."

Second Body Found During Suicide Investigation


"TAMARAC, FL — A suicide at a South Florida gun range led to the discovery of a second dead body in a Tamarac home as BSO investigators discovered it wasn’t just a suicide but a murder-suicide.

"According to BSO investigators, a 52-year-old man walked into the Arizona Shooting Range, located at 4317 North State Road 7 around 10:40 a.m. where he rented a gun and shot himself in the head. No one else was hurt.

"He was taken to Broward General Medical Center where he died.

"When investigators went to his home to notify his 45-year-old wife, they found her body inside the house on the 2400 block of Northwest 55th Street. Investigators have not said how she was killed or how long ago the murder took place."

Three Dead After Rampage In Florida RV Park


"DEERFIELD BEACH, FL — A Port Orange man's trip took a bizarre turn when he drove his family to a recreational vehicle park in Deerfield Beach, killed someone unknown to him there and then stabbed himself, his wife and two sons, the Broward Sheriff's Office said Friday.

"The incident led to an hours-long standoff with SWAT team members, and it ended with three people found dead: The alleged attacker, Willam De Jesus, 41, his 9-year-old son, Jeshiah De Jesus, and one of the RV's occupants, Ovila Plante, 76, a snowbird from La Tuque, Quebec, the Sheriff's Office said.

"Meanwhile, De Jesus' wife, Deanna De Jesus, 37, and his 7-year-old son remained hospitalized in serious condition on Friday, officials said.

"During part of the ordeal, Plante's girlfriend also was held captive inside her RV at Highland Woods, a community of recreational vehicles. Pierrette Beauchemin managed to escape, run to safety, and was unhurt.

"`This was initially just a bizarre and senseless crime,` sheriff's spokeswoman Dani Moschella said of how the standoff unfolded. `And over the course of the evening, it became more horrific.`"

"Ortiz is the daughter of 34-year-old Erica Delgado, who was also found dead in the burned trailer on the south side of Cheyenne on Feb 3.

"Capt. Rich Hillegas with the Laramie County Sheriff's Office says investigators have recovered surveillance video of Delgado buying gasoline at a local convenience store before the fire. Hillegas says investigators have recovered text messages that indicated Delgado intended to commit suicide but says he couldn't release details."

"NEW BERN, NC — Preliminary autopsy results show a deadly double shooting last week in New Bern was a murder-suicide.

"Brittany Jones and Johnnie Neely were found dead inside a home on Julia Clay Street Friday afternoon. Police say both people had been shot.

"While New Bern police say it could be three months to a year before the cause of deaths are known, the Onslow County Medical Examiner's Office [said] that the 20-year-old Jones died from multiple gunshot wounds, while Neely, who was 25-years-old, died from a single gun shot wound to the head.

"The Medical Examiner's Office lists Jones' death as a homicide and Neely's death as suicide."

Couple Found Dead By Woman's Father


"WAGONER, OK — The Wagoner County Sheriff’s Department has determined two people found dead last week died as the result of a murder-suicide.

"Sheriff Bob Colbert said Tuesday that Kelly Kay Owens, 48, and Curtis Dwayne Owens, 46, were found dead by Kelly Owens' father, Matthew Tierney.

"Their bodies were discovered Thursday morning in the bedroom of their home at 32564 East 750 Road, in the Taylor Ferry area near Fort Gibson Lake. Colbert said it appears the incident took place the night before.

"`What we have is two victims and one gun,` Colbert said. `That’s pretty much it right now.`

"Colbert said it appears Curtis Owens shot Kelly and then took his own life. Colbert and Investigator Dustin Dorr said they have no knowledge of any history of domestic incidents between the deceased.

"`I’m not familiar with any type of domestic violence history between them,` Colbert said, adding that the shooting is a bit of a mystery. `I don’t know if we’ll ever know why what happened took place. There were no notes left behind or anything like that.`"

Former Mayor, Ex-Wife Found Dead


"BELLEVUE, ID — The Hailey Police Department has confirmed that the former mayor of Bellevue and his ex-wife are dead in what appears to be a murder-suicide.

"Police were called to a home at 320 Walnut Street in Bellevue around 9 a.m. Tuesday. Once inside the home police found the body of 58-year-old Linda Vaughn of Bellevue. She was the apparent victim of a homicide.

"Lying next to her body was her ex-husband, 55-year-old Jon Anderson of Bellevue. It appears the former mayor died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"A caretaker found the bodies and called police. It appears the couple died in the early morning hours. There was a note left, but those details have not been released.

"Police say although the couple was divorced they lived at the home amicably."

"WORCESTER, MA — A Worcester man shot and killed his ex-girlfriend outside a grocery store before he drove home and turned the gun on himself Monday night, police said.

"Police were called to Compare Foods at 644 Main St. at about 6:45 p.m. They found Belinda Torres, 40, suffering from two gunshot wounds to her head. She was taken to U-Mass Hospital, where she was pronounced dead.

"Witnesses said that a man waited outside Compare Foods for Torres. As she walked out of the store, they said, he shot her two times. Police immediately surrounded the apartment of the victim's ex-boyfriend, Jose Soto.

"After police obtained a search warrant for Soto's apartment, they entered and found him dead, having suffered an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to his head, police said.

"Police said Torres also had an active restraining against Soto."

Suspected Killer Walks Into Oncoming Traffic


"STOCKTON, CA — A man suspected of killing a Santa Rosa woman on Sunday died Monday after he walked away from police in Stockton and stopped in front of an oncoming truck.

"Suspect John Quincy Ellis, 46, of Stockton stepped in front of a tractor trailer rig on Interstate 5 after being confronted by police, Santa Rosa Sgt. Lisa Banayat said.

"Santa Rosa police had tracked Ellis to Stockton during the night after developing information he'd left the scene of the homicide in a Stockton rental car, police reported.

"Stockton police spotted the rental car and stopped Ellis at 8:22 a.m. The suspect pulled over along I-5, got out and asked officers to shoot him.

"When officers didn't fire, Ellis walked onto the highway and stopped in front of an oncoming truck, which struck and killed him, Banayat said.

"Detectives believed Ellis shot a 61-year-old Santa Rosa woman, Carole Marie Brooks.

"The two were together Sunday afternoon at a small rental unit on Clark Street, which Brooks apparently used for her massage therapy business.

"Officers were called to Brooks' home, southeast of downtown, at 1:48 p.m. Sunday. The caller told dispatchers they heard a gunshot and a woman screaming.

"Neighbors saw a man run down the driveway and get into a car. They went to check on the woman and found her coming outside, bleeding from a stomach wound.

"Brooks died some hours later.

"Detectives haven't released any possible motive for the shooting."

Police Believe Man Planned Deadly Explosion


"GRAHAM, WA — Authorities believe an explosion and fire Sunday at the Washington state home of Josh Powell has killed him and his two children.

"Police are awaiting verification from the Medical Examiner’s Office, but they believe the three dead are Powell, the husband of missing Utah woman Susan Powell, and their two children, said Ed Troyer of the Pierce County Sheriff’s Office.

"Troyer said emails Powell sent authorities seemed to confirm that Powell planned the deadly blast.

"The explosion occurred just moments after a Child Protective Services worker brought the two boys to the home for a supervised visit, said Graham Fire and Rescue Chief Gary Franz.

"`Everything we know right now, this has become a crime scene,` Franz said.

"Powell let the boys into his Graham house, then blocked the social worker from entering. The social worker called her supervisors to report that she could smell gas, and the home exploded.

"`What happened here was a deeply wrong thing. It was an act of evil. It wasn’t a tragedy,` Pierce County Sheriff Paul Pastor said, as reported by the Tacoma News Tribune."

Iraq War Vet And Wife Found Dead


"DAYTONA BEACH, FL — Daytona Beach police are investigating a murder-suicide of a couple who lived at the Breakers Apartments on Jimmy Ann Drive.

"Officers were called out to the apartment complex today and found the bodies of Jason Pemberton, 28, and his wife, Tiffany, 25, police said. Police Chief Mike Chitwood identified Pemberton as a decorated veteran of the Iraq War.

"A preliminary investigation revealed that Jason Pemberton shot Tiffany Pemberton with a rifle, then turned the gun on himself, police said.

"A neighbor reported hearing two gunshots about 9:30 p.m. Saturday, but officers were not notified then, police said. Another neighbor reported hearing shots about 6:30 p.m.

"The couple had lived at the Breakers for about a year, police said. Jason Pemberton is from Alabama, and Tiffany Pemberton is from North Carolina."

Son Dead, Father Injured After Domestic Dispute


"CHESAPEAKE, OH — A Chesapeake area man was shot twice by his son, who then turned the gun on himself Friday evening, said Lawrence County Sheriff Jeff Lawless.

"The son died of the self-inflicted wound, while his father is in stable condition.

"`It was a domestic dispute that got out of hand,` Lawless said. The man and his son both were transported to Cabell Huntington Hospital Friday night.

"The sheriff’s department received a call of a domestic dispute at 8308 County Road 15, Chesapeake, about 11 p.m. Dispatchers also received a call about 10:40 p.m. of shots being fired.

"When deputies arrived, they found two adult males on the front porch of the residence. Both had blood on them and windows were broken out of the house.

"The names of the two individuals was withheld by the sheriff’s department pending the notification of next of kin.

"A handgun was recovered at the scene, Lawless said."

"Relationship Troubles" End In Murder/Suicide


"MESA, CO — The two people who were found dead in a Mesa home Thursday morning had been shot to death, according to the Mesa County Coroner’s Office.

"Authorities say it was a murder suicide. According to the coroner's report, 52-year-old LaVon A. Hoffman was shot twice. She died from those wounds.

"The report says 47-year-old Robert A. Matile then died of a self-inflicted shotgun wound to the head.

"Both Matile and Hoffman were residents of Mesa, Colorado.

"The Mesa County Sheriff's Office received a call just before 8:00 a.m. Thursday that a body had been found in the home on 48 Road. Shortly after that call, it was reported that a second body was found.

"A friend of Hoffman [said] that Matile and Hoffman were dating and had been going through some relationship troubles recently."

"DE PERE, WI — De Pere police are investigating the murder of an adult and two children by another adult who then killed himself, police said this evening.

"Police got a call of shots fired at around 3 p.m. today in the 1200 block of South Erie Street. Chief Derek A. Beiderwieden said a man killed one adult and two children, who appeared to be his family, before turning the gun on himself.

"Land records show Denis and Michelle Bay own the residence where the incident occurred, 1245 S. Erie St. Records indicate the couple has two children, Andrea and Daniel, but it’s unclear whether these individuals were in the home at the time of the shooting.

"Dan Angell, who also lives across the street, said they seemed like a normal family.

"`I would have never guessed that any of that would have happened,` he said."
