Police Find "Gun Battle" Was Murder/Suicide

"BURIEN, WA — Deputies said a shooting this week in the Boulevard Park area that left two men dead was a murder/suicide and not a running gun battle, as they initially reported.

"`On Wednesday deputies responded to a house in the 1000 block of South 102nd Street to a report of gunshots that struck a house,` King County Sheriff’s Sgt. Cindi West said in a statement. `When deputies arrived they found a car running in the front yard with a driver and passenger inside, both shot in the head. The driver still had a gun in his hand.`

"The 23-year-old passenger from Seattle died at the scene and the driver, also 23, died at Harborview Medical Center.

"`Deputies discovered that two other houses nearby had also been struck by gunfire during the same time period: houses and vehicles in the 10200 block of 1st Avenue South and a house in the 10200 block of 10th Avenue South,` West said. `Witnesses initially reported they thought they heard two vehicles in the area but police believe the other houses and vehicles were shot at by the occupants of the vehicle found at the scene.`

"The driver was upset over a recent break-up with his girlfriend and the ex-girlfriend was in the house on 102nd at the time of the shooting, deputies said.

"`Evidence at the scene indicates the passenger died of a gunshot wound to the head fired at close range,` West said. `Detectives believe the driver shot the passenger and then turned the gun on himself.`"

"They Seemed Like Good Neighbors"

"CHESTERFIELD, VA — A Chesterfield community wants to know what prompted a man to shoot his wife and then set their home on fire, before turning the gun on himself. The deadly discovery was made when fire crews were called to the home on 2012 Castle Glen Ct. about 11:30 Thursday night.

"What would cause someone to do this? That's the question on everyone's mind in this neighborhood. People described Walter Hester as a kind man who cared about youth and even had a teenager of his own.

"`Just kind of shocked. I would've never expected it,` said Hunter Bogert.

He came to see the crime scene for himself.

"`He was always so happy. Such a nice guy,` Bogert said.

Something went terribly wrong Thursday night. Chesterfield Police say Hester shot his wife 46-year-old Clara Morgan-Hester, then set their home on fire before turning the gun on himself.

Stalker Who Killed Woman Found Dead In Trailer

"ANTIOCH TWP, IL — A woman stabbed to death early Friday had court-ordered protection from the ex-boyfriend who killed her and then took his own life.

"The victim, Diane Kephart, 61, of Vernon Hills, died in the driveway of her parents’ home in unincorporated Antioch, where she had been residing, according to Lake County Sheriff’s Department Sgt. Sara Balmes, who said deputies were called to the scene at 7:38 a.m.

"Balmes said deputies aided by a canine unit tracked the killer, Paul Neff, 57, of Mundelein, Ill., to a camper or mobile-home type trailer outside a bar just south of the father’s home on North Westlake Avenue. Members of the sheriff’s department special tactical response team found Neff dead inside the trailer shortly after 11 a.m., according to Balmes, who said Neff apparently stabbed himself to death.

"Kephart had been living in her parents’ home. Her father saw her lying in the driveway but did not see what happened, Balmes said, adding that the father and a neighbor called 911.

"Balmes said the victim had sought the order of protection, which is a type of restraining order, against Neff in February, and the order was extended this month. Balmes was not certain about details underlying the protection order filed with the court.

"According to [news reports], Kephart was trying to avoid Neff, who assaulted her last month before stalking and killing her Friday.

"Kephart was on her way to work at the Uline shipping company in Waukegan when she exited her parents’ home in the 41000 block of North Westlake Avenue in Antioch Township when she was attacked by Neff."

Family Of Four Found Dead

"MESQUITE, TX — A woman shot and killed her husband and two young adult children before killing herself in their suburban Dallas home, investigators said Thursday.

"The bodies of Angelica Vazquez, 43, her husband and their two children were discovered four days after officers first responded to a 911 call reporting the sound of gunfire but found no reason to go into the family's Mesquite home, police spokesman Bill Hedgpeth said.

"A handgun was found near Vazquez's body in the master bedroom, Hedgpeth said. The bodies of Marcelo Vazquez, 44, and their children, 18-year-old Alejandro and 21-year-old Paulina, were found in separate rooms in the house.

"Angelica Vazquez's death was ruled a suicide, while the other three deaths were homicides, the Dallas County medical examiner's office said in a statement issued Thursday.

"Hedgpeth said police initially went to the home Saturday morning after a female 911 caller on a cellphone said she'd heard gunfire. Officers knocked on the door, looked in the windows and spoke to a neighbor but found no reason to force their way in, Hedgpeth said.

"The same officers returned to the home Wednesday after their days off, found newspapers and mail piling up and decided to go inside, he said.

"The officers were proper to leave Saturday without taking action, Hedgpeth said.

"`Frankly, when there are no signs of forced entry you clear the call,` he said. `I think they used due diligence by going back like they did.`"

Estranged Couple Found Dead

"UTICA, NY — Authorities have ruled the deaths of a man and woman found in their Utica home Friday night as a murder-suicide.

Man Kills TV Host, Self

"WHITEFISH, MT — A northwestern Montana man shot and killed the host of the Sportsman Channel show `A Rifleman’s Journal` in an apparent jealous rage while the TV personality was visiting the shooter’s wife, police said Friday.

"Wayne Bengston, 41, then beat his wife, took his 2-year-old son to a relative’s house and drove to his home about 25 miles away in West Glacier, where he killed himself, Whitefish Police Chief Bill Dial said.

"`It’s pretty much an open-and-closed case. Homicide and suicide,` Dial said.

"Police identified the shooting victim as Gregory G. Rodriguez, 43, of Sugar Land, Texas. Bengston’s wife told police that Rodriguez was in town on business and visiting her at her mother’s house in Whitefish when her husband showed up Thursday at about 10:30 p.m.

"Rodriguez and the woman, who works for a firearms manufacturer in the Flathead Valley, met at a trade show and struck up a casual relationship that police do not believe was romantic, Dial said.

"She and Rodriguez were sitting at the kitchen table, talking over a glass of wine, when Bengston entered the house and shot Rodriguez, Dial said.

"He then beat his wife on the face and head, most likely with the pistol, he said. She was treated at a hospital and released.

"`I think it was a jealous husband, but this is all conjecture,` Dial said.

"After the shooting was reported, Flathead County sheriff’s deputies found Bengston’s truck parked in his driveway. Efforts by a police SWAT team to contact Bengston inside the house were unsuccessful, and officers found his body with what appeared to be a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said."

Deputy Finds Bodies During Welfare Check

"PANAMA CITY, FL — Bay County sheriff's deputy, conducting a welfare check at a Southport home Tuesday morning, made a grisly discovery.

"Inside the house at 9219 Resota Beach Road were the bodies of a man and woman—both dead from gunshot wounds. Investigators are still trying to figure out exactly what happened but they suspect it's a murder-suicide.

"According to the Bay County Sheriff's Office, the deceased are Mack O. Kilpatrick, 61, and Kelley Anna Dickson, 48. Once married, they divorced in 2010 but lived in the house together.

"`They have been having a little bit of trouble since they split up… but I thought they had gotten back together and everything was alright,` said Phillip Bass, a neighbor who knew the couple for 11 years.

"Major Tommy Ford said a friend of the couple asked the sheriff's office to send a deputy to check the house after Mack failed to show up for work the night before. Ford said the house was not secure so the deputy went inside and found the bodies, along with a handgun.

"Major Ford would not say how long the couple had been dead, how many shots were fired or who did the shooting. "We're still trying to determine that and I don't want to release any information preliminarily until we're able to get a clearer picture of exactly what happened," he said.

"Bass said he talked to Kilpatrick on the phone three days ago. `I saw them down here day before yesterday on the side of the road... looked like they was arguing a little bit,` said Bass.

"Ford said the couple had no law enforcement history of domestic violence but confirmed investigators had learned they had argued in the past. `The evidence was at least consistent with what we would see with a murder/suicide,` said Ford."
