"Autopsy results indicated Denise Taylor Freeman of Houma died from asphyxiation and drowning. Her body was found in a bathtub inside the home late Thursday night. Terrebonne Parish Sheriff Jerry Larpenter said evidence points to Freeman as the killer and they believe Denise was his first victim.

"After killing his current wife, police believe Freeman then went to the Lockport home of Lafourche Parish Councilman Phillip Gouaux. Freeman was divorced from Gouaux's daughter Jeanne, who was not at the home.

"Once inside, police believe the shotgun-wielding gunman shot Phillip Gouaux in the throat, killed Gouaux's wife and shot his other daughter Andrea.

"The councilman was able to make the initial 911 call before he was rushed with Andrea to University Hospital in New Orleans. They are listed in critical, but stable condition.

"Something Must Have Set Him Off"

"KAILUA, HI — A 36-year-old Kailua man allegedly attempted to take his 2-year-old daughter's life and his own late Christmas afternoon by jumping into his backyard pool.

"Police said the incident occurred between 5 and 5:15 p.m., leaving the man in critical condition. He is suspected of second-degree attempted murder and remained at an area hospital Thursday.

"The girl also survived but her condition was unknown.

"`The baby was OK,` said Ernest Burlen, 79, a neighbor. `EMS took her to the hospital with the father. He wasn't looking too good.`

"Burlen said the father, Thomas Morton, had his daughter on weekends and holidays and seemed to be a good father and a good uncle to his twin brother's three children, who lived in the downstairs portion of their two-story house at 1288 Kina St.

"At the time, Morton's brother and his wife had gone to the airport to drop off their children, who were going to catch a neighbor island flight to visit grandparents.

"Another neighbor, who lives on the adjacent hillside, said she heard loud moans before the incident.

"`It sounded like someone in a lot of pain,` said the woman, 59, who asked not to be named. `I couldn't see anybody. It went on for some time. It sounded like this person was in agony.`

"She then saw the next-door couple scale the fence. The husband `fished the child out of the water and handed her to the wife,` she said.

"The husband jumped back into the water and tried to pull the man out of the deep end, she said.

"But he struggled to bring Morton to the surface, so the hillside neighbor's husband, 58, ran down to help and managed to pull Morton out of the water. He remained unconscious.

"Burlen said Morton was wearing denim trousers, and the child was fully dressed.

"`I know he loved the baby,` Burlen said. `Something must have set him off.`"

Bitter Custody Battle Escalates Into "Holiday Death Plunge"

"NEW YORK, NY — A distraught dad threw himself and his 3-year-old son off the roof of a 52-story West Side skyscraper Sunday in a holiday death plunge that apparently stemmed from a custody battle, police said.

"The 35-year-old man, Dmitriy Kanarikov, died after jumping from the Lincoln Square tower at 12:05 p.m. The red-haired tot, Kirill, dressed in Christmas pajamas, died moments later at St. Luke’s-Roosevelt Hospital, cops said.

"The shocking tragedy came just three months after Kanarikov, an immigrant from Ukraine, wrote on his Facebook page how he aspired to be an outstanding parent and spouse.

"`I want to be the best dad and husband—nothing is more important to me right now,` Kanarikov wrote.

"His estranged wife, Svetlana Bukharina, boasted on her Facebook page in March, `I have the best husband and son in the world.`

"But apparently their home life imploded in recent months.

"Kanarikov and Bukharina split, and the cherished time he had with Kirill was curbed by a custody fight.

"Their breakup was so fraught with anger that they had to meet in a public place—the NYPD’s 17th Precinct stationhouse—to drop off and pick up their son, a source said.

"Kanarikov picked up Kirill at 10 a.m. Sunday at the designated precinct and was to return him there at 1 p.m., the source said.

"Cops said the bodies landed on the roofs of two different buildings neighboring the South Park Tower at 124 W. 60th St., where Kanarikov tossed his son and jumped to his death.

"The father’s body was found on the roof of a low-rise building at 425 W. 59th St. while the son’s landed atop a four-story building at 445 W. 59th St., police said."

Father And Son Found Dead In Apartment

"ESSEX, VT —Police are investigating a murder/suicide involving a father and his teenage son.

"Police say the call came in just before 2 p.m. Wednesday. And within the hour, an Essex apartment on Carmichael Street was crawling with police.

"The incident was initially reported to police as a suicide, but when investigators went inside, the details grew even more grim with the discovery of a second body.

"`Responding officers found a middle-aged male and a teenage male deceased inside the apartment,` Essex Police Chief Brad LaRose said.

"Police have now identified the dead as Ludwig `Sonny` Schumacher, 49, and his son, Gunnar, 14. Investigators say Sonny killed his son, and then hanged himself. A friend discovered the bodies and called police.

"`School officials have been informed of the incident and measures will be in place to respond to students and staff's needs tomorrow and in the days to come,` said Chief LaRose.

"Police estimate the murder-suicide likely happened more than 24 hours ago. But they're not saying what prompted the violence."

No Known Motive In Medical Center Rampage

"RENO, NV — Police think a suicidal gunman was on a mission of violence when he calmly entered a third-floor urology office and opened fire with a 12-gauge shotgun, killing one doctor, critically wounding another and shooting a third victim after warning patients and their children in a waiting area to `get out.`

"A witness who was among those the shooter passed in the waiting room told The Associated Press on Wednesday that the man believed to be from Northern California could have killed many more people at the Reno medical complex if that was his intent.

"Detectives have not been able to establish a motive or any relationship the man may have had with the two doctors and the relative of a patient who were shot Tuesday before the gunman killed himself.

"`While we piece this thing together, we are trying to figure out what that relationship is, if there is a relationship at all,` Reno Deputy Police Chief Mac Venzo said.

"`But the fact the shooter went through the first and second floor, made his way to the third floor of the building, would indicate to me it is not a random event,` he told reporters at police headquarters.

"Police were withholding the name of the killer because they said they still have not been able to reach his next of kin."

Sheriff: "`Tis The Season"

"MERCED, CA — A Merced man shot his estranged wife Monday afternoon and then turned the gun on himself, the Merced County Sheriff’s Department reported.

"Steve Mackey, 55, was pronounced dead at the scene inside his home at 2844 Village Drive in the Beachwood area in northwest Merced, outside the city limit. Nancy Mackey, also 55, was shot multiple times and hospitalized in critical condition, authorities said.

"Sheriff Mark Pazin said detectives believe Nancy Mackey was shot as many as three times.

"An update on Nancy Mackey’s condition was not available Monday evening.

"Pazin called the shooting an `apparent suicide.`

"Teary-eyed family members gathered in small groups outside the taped-off home. Neighbors in the quiet, Christmas-decorated residential neighborhood declined to comment.

"The Sheriff’s Department received a series of 911 calls and reports of multiple shots fired about 1 p.m.

"`There was some type of verbal altercation and he (Mackey) pulled a handgun and multiple shots were fired,` Pazin said.

"The pair’s adult daughter tried to intervene in the argument before the shooting started. She was not injured, the sheriff said.

"It was not clear what they were arguing about. `Unfortunately, it is that time of the season and there are lots of emotions and passion associated with this time of the year,` Pazin said, `and it probably doesn’t take much to get those emotions going.`

"Deputies said Nancy Mackey was no longer living with Steve Mackey. It was not clear why Nancy Mackey and her daughter went to the home Monday.

"`We’re trying to piece all that together,` Pazin said.

"The sheriff said a firearm was recovered at the scene, but declined to release any further details about the weapon. Pazin also declined to say where Steve Mackey was shot."

One Dead, One Injured In High School Shooting Rampage

"DENVER, CO — The 18-year-old Colorado gunman who stormed his suburban Denver high school and shot and critically wounded a classmate last week before committing suicide died of a shotgun blast to the head, the county coroner said on Monday.

"An autopsy conducted on the body of Karl Halverson Pierson revealed he died of `a severe head injury,` the Arapahoe County Coroner's Office said in a statement that classified the death as a suicide.

"The 17-year-old victim of the shooting spree, Claire Davis, is in a coma and is listed in critical but stable condition, her family said in a statement issued through the hospital where she is being treated.

"Armed with a pump-action shotgun, a machete and three Molotov cocktails, Pierson entered Arapahoe High School in Centennial on Friday, firing the weapon and igniting one of the explosive devices.

"The rampage took place just 8 miles from the scene of one of the deadliest school massacres in U.S. history, Columbine High School, where two students gunned down 13 classmates and staff before killing themselves in 1999.

"Arapahoe County Sheriff Grayson Robinson said Pierson had been upset with a teacher identified as the school's debate coach and librarian, Tracy Murphy, who had disciplined Pierson, a member of the debate team, earlier in the school year.

"Pierson shot Davis in the face at point-blank range outside the library, then shot himself as an armed deputy cornered him in the library, Robinson said."
