"FAIRFIELD, VA - The Rockbridge County Sheriff's Office is investigating an apparent murder-suicide in which a teacher from Kate Collins Middle School was killed.
"Deputies say the female teacher, identified as special education instructor Nancy Sullenberger, was in the process of getting a divorce.
"They say her husband went to Sullenberger's house in Fairfield around 9 p.m. Wednesday, shot her with a handgun and then shot himself.
"According to deputies, her son was at the home when the husband arrived. He ran away and called law enforcement.
"Deputies also say there was a protective order in place against the husband because of a domestic assault charge in April.
"The investigation into the shooting is ongoing."From

"BAY SHORE, NY - A Long Beach man fatally shot his ex-girlfriend before turning the gun on himself in her Bay Shore apartment while five children were in the home Wednesday night, Suffolk County police said.
"Officers responded to a call of a shooting at an apartment complex on Brook Avenue and upon arrival they found 43-year-old James Snead and his former girlfriend, Karolyn Encarnacion, 42, both dead of gunshot wounds at 11:43 p.m., police said.
"Snead was with Encarnacion at her apartment when the two entered her bedroom, police said.
"Encarnacion’s daughters, ages 12 and 14, were in the apartment with three of their friends when they heard a woman scream and shots fired in the bedroom, police said. The children left the apartment and a neighbor called police.

"BATESBURG, SC - Two people are dead following an apparent murder-suicide that occurred late Wednesday morning on the outskirts of Aiken County, officials say.
"The victim was 23-year-old Brandi Nicole Jordan, of Blue Poppy Road in Batesburg. She was shot once in the chest by her live-in boyfriend, Travis Blease Miller, 36, before he turned the gun on himself, said Aiken County Coroner Tim Carlton.
"Miller died from a self-inflicted gun shot wound to the head, Carlton explained.
"The bodies will be taken to Newberry for autopsies today for definitive findings.
"Investigators with the Aiken County Sheriff's Office and the coroner's office have talked with Miller's parents, who live in a neighboring mobile home, for details about the events that led up to the shootings.
"From Miller's parents' accounts, officials understand that Miller and Jordan had been living in the mobile home together for several months.
"The residence didn't have air conditioning or properly working electricity, which was running into the residence though an extension cord connected to the family's home. Due to the lack of utilities, the couple would often spend much of the day with Miller's parents. On Wednesday morning, however, the 36-year-old told his mother that Jordan wouldn't be visiting with the family and then returned to their mobile home.
"Officials say they believe the woman was still alive at that point.
"Moments after Miller returned to his home, his mother reported hearing a loud bang. She went to check on the two and found Miller performing CPR on Jordan and telling the woman to `get up,` the coroner said.
"Miller gave his mother his cellular phone and told her to call for help, but the woman was unable to get a signal.
"She called 911 from her phone at 11:13 a.m.
"Miller then returned to his parents' home, where he got into an argument with his father and then returned to his residence. The nature of that argument was not known. His mother then heard what she knew was a gun shot, the coroner said.
"At 11:22 a.m. she called 911 again.
"Troy Elwell, a sheriff's office spokesperson, said he was not aware of any history of problems at the home, adding that it is still unclear as to what prompted the shooting.
"He said family members did say the two had been having recent problems, but he said he couldn't definitively say what those issues were.
"Carlton said there were still a lot of questions surrounding the incident, adding that toxicology tests would be done and the investigation is ongoing."From

"HUNTSVILLE, AL - Huntsville police and other emergency personnel are on the scene of a shooting at Huntington Apartments on Meadowbrook Drive.
"Huntsville Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Mark Roberts said they are responding to a murder/suicide call that went out just after 1:00 p.m.
"The victim is 30-year-old Ben Lowhorne. He's a graduate of West Minister Academy and Athens State University.
"Lowhorne has two children, ages nine and seven.
"Lowhorne was a member of the Coast Guard and owned an accounting business on Leeman Ferry Road.

"ORLANDO, FL - A man and woman were found dead in a home in south Orange County early Tuesday morning.
"Deputies identified the victims as Jose Duran, 52, and his wife, Aida Duran, 47.
"The couple were found dead in the Falcon Trace subdivision on Eyas Road near Hunters Creek.
"Orange County deputies said they were asked to conduct a check on the couple at the behest of the couple's adult son. Investigators said the son lives with the couple.
"After entering the home, deputies said they found the couple's bodies. Detectives said Aida Duran was the victim of a homicide and that Jose Duran succumbed to what appeared to be a self-inflicted injury.
"Neighbors of the deceased [said] that the couple were from New York and have four children, one whom works in law enforcement.
"One neighbor described Jose Duran as a `quiet person.`"From
