Father, Son Survive Botched Murder/Suicide

"GREEN BAY, WI - A Green Bay father and son are recovering today after a violent dispute Wednesday in which the son slashed his throat in an apparent suicide attempt.

"The 21-year-old son is at St. Vincent Hospital’s intensive care unit, but is expected to recover from his injuries, Green Bay police Lt. Jeff Engelbrecht said. The 56-year-old father is at an area hospital and expected to recover from a stab wound.

"Green Bay police said the son stabbed his father in the back with a pocketknife, then later slashed his own throat when police arrived to investigate.

"The incidents happened in the 2800 block of University Avenue on the city's east side, Engelbrecht said.

"Police received a call at 9:31 p.m. Wednesday that the father was in the Bellin Hospital emergency room with a knife wound that resulted from a dispute with his son. It is still unclear what the dispute was over. The son had indicated to his mother that he would harm himself if police tried to arrest him.

"Police went to the house with a fire department emergency squad. There, they saw the son emerge from a wooded area, wearing camouflage clothing and holding a knife to his throat. Police approached and told him to drop the knife, and shot him with at least one beanbag round when he did not. Officers then used a Taser and a police K-9 unit to control the man and take him into custody. The son slashed his throat, causing a serious wound, Engelbrecht said. Rescuers took the son to St. Vincent Hospital in an ambulance, with police cars blocking intersections along Webster Avenue for the ambulance.

"Green Bay police are expected to refer criminal charges to the Brown County District Attorney’s Office."
