10 Dead, 11 Injured In "Frenzied" School Attack

"Beijing, China - Seven children and two adults at a kindergarten were hacked to death Wednesday while 11 students sustained injuries in a frenzied attack in China's Shaanxi province. The attacker later committed suicide.

"A 48-year-old villager, identified as Wu Huanming, hacked to death five boys, two girls and the kindergarten owner-cum-teacher, Wu Hongying, using a kitchen meat knife at around 8 a.m. local time Wednesday at a privately-run kindergarten in Linchang village in Nanzheng County, Xinhua quoted officials of the Shaanxi Provincial Emergency Response Office as saying.

"Wu Hongying's mother, who was injured in the attack, died in hospital later Wednesday, an official said, adding that 11 children were also injured in the gruesome attack and have been admitted at a hospital.

"The attacker, Wu Huanming, returned home after the killings and committed suicide, they said. His motive for the attack was not immediately known.

"The government has asked local authorities to strengthen security in schools in the province.

"This was the fifth attack in kindergartens and primary schools in China since March."

"A 2-1/2-year-old girl was snatched from her mother and thrown out the window of a ninth-floor flat by her uncle before he leapt after her in a murder-suicide case in Sheung Shui yesterday.

"Mok Ki-yan and her father's younger brother Mok Pak-ki, 27, who were found lying unconscious on the pavement outside Choi Wah House at Choi Yuen Estate, were declared dead at the scene by paramedics.

"Her mother, 28, who is a visitor from the mainland, ran downstairs shouting, `My daughter was thrown down`, repeatedly before she held the girl in her arms and wept, according to witnesses."

"HONG KONG - A stunned woman returned home from work in the early hours of yesterday to find her father hanging inside the toilet and her mother near death in bed.

"Police have classified the deaths, in Hiu Kwai House, Kwai Chung, as homicide and suicide, while detectives from Kwai Chung's district crime squad carry out a follow-up investigation.

"The bodies of the 67-year-old man, surnamed Lui, and his 70-year-old wife surnamed Wong, were discovered by their 36-year- old daughter when she returned from work as a late-shift cashier in a supermarket. Ms Lui called the police at about 1.20am.

"Initial examinations found abrasions on the neck of the woman. Police believe the man strangled his wife before killing himself.

"The husband and wife were pronounced dead at Yan Chai Hospital. Post-mortem examinations will be conducted to find out the cause of death.

"There was no death note and the daughter told police that her father acted normally when she last saw him before leaving for work...

"Neighbors said the couple appeared to be in poor health and were feeble. They described the daughter as being devoted to the parents. She prepared their evening meal before leaving for work in the afternoon.

"The neighbors believed the couple had throat problems, adding there was a strong smell of medicinal oil around them.

"Tenants of nearby flats added they did not know much about the family as they moved in only two years ago."

"A man who jumped out from an apartment on the 35th floor to commit suicide in Shenzhen special economic zone, Guangdong province, last Thursday, inadvertently killed a passing bike rider.

"Liu, a young man from Heilongjiang province and alleged drug addict, jumped from the building at about 4 pm, after standing for 12 hours on the balcony.

"Li, a 52-year-old man from Hunan province who ran a fast food restaurant nearby, was delivering takeaways when Liu jumped on him.

"Liu died immediately and Li later succumbed in hospital."
