Five Dead In Ohio

"NEWTON FALLS, OH — Police here believe a village man shot and killed four people Friday before fleeing to a nearby cemetery and fatally shooting himself in the chest after a short stand-off with police, ending an hours-long manhunt.

"Records, family interviews and police sources said Robert Brazzon, 55, fatally shot his girlfriend, Tracey Engler, 38, at the couple's 604-A Newton Drive home, then killed Rikki Cogley, 42, his wife Kathy Cogley, 39, and her son, 15-year-old Everett Greathouse at their 72 Trumbull Court home.

"Brazzon then drove a white Dodge Intrepid to the Newton Township Cemetery on Ridge Road where he took his own life, according to a release from Newton Falls police Chief John Kuivila.

"The Cogleys and Greathouse all had multiple gunshot wounds, according to police.

"Another man, who police said drove with Brazzon during parts of the four-hour manhunt, was being questioned by investigators late Friday but had not been arrested.

"Investigators taped off the area surrounding both homes, which were separated by a narrow street about a block a part. Nearby residents watched the events unfold for most of the day.

"No motive has been given for the shootings.

"About 4 p.m., Kuivila and dozens of other officers who were still gathering evidence from the 72 Trumbull Court home, raced to their vehicles and drove to the cemetery. They quickly surrounded Robert Brazzon, who shot himself in the chest, police said.

"Police found the white Intrepid in the cemetery."

Grandkids Find Bodies In Kitchen

"WALHALLA, SC — A man and woman were shot to death Friday night in their home near Walhalla, Oconee County Coroner Karl E. Addis said this morning.

"Marjorie P. Putnam, 62, and Aaron D. Putnam, 70, were found by their grandchildren shortly before 7:30 p.m., Addis said.

"The grandparents were in the kitchen of their home at 520 East Halfway Branch Road, he said. A handgun was lying next to Aaron Putnam, he said.

"Both died at the scene, Addis said, and it appeared that the husband shot the wife and then shot himself.

"The Oconee County Sheriff’s Department is investigating, and Addis said autopsies will be done Sunday."

Shooter And Victim In Critical Condition

"CINCINNATI, OH — The director of operations at Cincinnati Memorial Hall shot his girlfriend Friday, then turned the gun on himself in a botched murder-suicide attempt, Cincinnati police said.

"Cincinnati police officials said they believe Ray Henry, 45, shot Marianna Potee, 43, in a car at 324 E. 14th St., then shot himself.

"The shooting happened about 1:20 p.m. Friday, just north of the city’s new casino site.

"Henry and Potee were taken to University Hospital with critical injuries.

"Police continue to investigate the shooting."

Mom Kills Two Kids, Botches Suicide

"BRONX, NY — Officers answering a call about a gas leak in a Bronx apartment building found a 5-year-old boy and his 4-month-old sister unconscious in an apartment that had dangerous levels of gas after the children’s mother apparently turned on the oven and then cut her wrists, the police said Friday.

"Officers responding on Thursday night found the two children and their mother, Lisette Bamenga, 29, who was conscious when they arrived, in the kitchen, where a stove burner was on but unlighted. Emergency medical workers were unable to revive the children: the boy, Trevor Noel Jr., died at the scene, and his sister, Lillian Noel, was pronounced dead at Jacobi Medical Center.

"It was unclear whether the children had succumbed to gas asphyxiation—lack of oxygen—or died from a lethal dose of some kind of poison, a police official said.

"Ellen Borakove, a spokeswoman for the medical examiner’s office, said that autopsies on the children did not reveal the cause of death and that further tests would be conducted.

"No one had been charged in the deaths as of Friday afternoon.

"Investigators said Ms. Bamenga had inflicted minor cuts to her wrists in a suicide attempt, and was listed in stable condition at Jacobi."

Woman Stabbed On Street, Man Found Dead In Home

"NEW YORK, NY — A Roosevelt man fatally stabbed a woman—believed to be his ex-girlfriend—not far for her home Thursday morning, then killed himself, police said.

"The unidentified man and woman argued on the corner of Nassau Road and East Raymond Avenue in Roosevelt, and that argument `proceeded down the street,` Nassau police homicide chief John Azzata said.

"Police responding to a 9:25 a.m. call of shots fired instead found the stabbing victim dead on a sidewalk on East Raymond, Azzata said.

"Police went to the suspect's home on Union Place and found that he had committed suicide by stabbing himself, Azzata said. Azzata did not say what led police to the suspect.

"Azzata said the victim had gone to family court and secured a restraining order against the suspect on June 15. She had not contacted police, he said."
