Slasher Expected To Live

"GREENWICH, CT — A 20-year-old woman was found stabbed to death Wednesday night in her backcountry home in what police are calling an attempted murder-suicide.

"The woman’s father was found at the scene with multiple self-inflicted stab wounds to his body. He was taken to Stamford Hospital and is expected to recover, according to Lt. Richard Cochran, who classified the incident as a domestic violence homicide.

"The victim is 2007 Greenwich High School graduate Amanda Dobrzanski, according to the State Medical Examiner’s Office in Farmington. A spokeswoman said an autopsy would be performed Thursday afternoon. Police said the woman’s throat was slashed.

"Cochran said officers were requested to check on the two parties during a welfare call and given a code to get in the home at 100 Sterling Road.

"They found two bedroom doors locked and forced their entry into the rooms, police said.

"`They found one victim, the father, laying on the bed with multiple self-inflicted stab wounds all over his body,` Cochran said. `He mentioned something about his daughter and they searched the rest of residence, which was quite large, and located the victim in the bedroom. She had been stabbed and the wounds were fatal.`

"Police did not release the names of the victim or suspect."

Unhappy New Year In Finland

"HELSINKI, Finland — A gunman clad in black went on a shooting rampage Thursday, killing his ex-girlfriend then slaying four workers at a suburban shopping mall near Helsinki before apparently turning his gun on himself, police said.

"Finnish police said one woman and three men were shot dead Thursday morning at the Sello shopping mall in Espoo, six miles (10 kilometers) west of Helsinki.

"The gunman was identified as 43-year-old Ibrahim Shkupolli, an immigrant who had been living for several years in Finland. Police said he killed his ex-girlfriend in a nearby apartment before heading to the mall

"The ex-girlfriend, a Finnish woman born in 1967, also worked at the mall and had taken out a restraining order against Shkupolli, police said.

"Witnesses said panic erupted at the mall, one of the Nordic region's largest, when the shots rang out. Hundreds of mall workers were evacuated to a nearby library and firehouse, trains were halted and helicopters brought in as police launched a manhunt for the heavily armed killer.

"After several hours, a body was found in Shkupolli's home, which police believed to be the killer himself. Police refused to confirm the exact identity immediately, but said the cause of the death appeared to be suicide.

"Police refused to discuss Shkupolli's nationality, but Finnish media reported he was an ethnic Albanian from Kosovo.

"At a news conference, police officials refused to say whether the four killed at the mall had been targeted by Shkupolli.

"The midmorning slayings shocked hundreds of people who had gone shopping early on New Year's Eve. One witness told the state broadcaster YLE that a gunman dressed in black began randomly shooting at people on the second floor of the mall.

"`There were loads of people who were crying, and many vendors who were completely panicked,` the unnamed witness said.

"Another female witness told YLE radio news she saw the suspect carrying a long-barrelled pistol and rushing past the cashier line at Sello's Prisma supermarket, where the slayings took place.

"Finland, a nation of 5.3 million, has 1.6 million firearms in private hands, a long tradition of hunting and ranks among the top five nations in the world in civilian gun ownership."

"Mutual Combat" Leads To Xmas Eve Murder/Suicide

"HARRIS COUNTY, TX - A 24-year-old man fatally shot his younger sister, called his mother and told her she'd been shot and then killed himself in north Harris County early Thursday, officials said.

"Jordan Williamson fatally shot his 22-year-old sister, Jessica Williamson, while in the living room of their family's home in the 22700 block of Earlmist around 4:15 a.m., Harris County Sheriff's homicide sergeant Greg Pinkins said. The two were the only ones in the house, investigators said.

"He then left the home, with several weapons that were recovered later, and after briefly eluding law enforcement pulled over and shot himself in the head with a rifle, the detective said.

"`We don't know why it happened yet,` Pinkins said. `There have been some problems between them.`

"Pinkins said investigators cannot rule out that the young man used the same weapon in both shootings.

"Some time before the shooting, deputies from Harris County Precinct 4 responded to a call at the home in which the siblings had argued, pushed and shoved one another and thrown household items.

"`It was a mutual combat thing,` said Pinkins, who emphasized neither of them sustained notable injuries.

"Pinkins was unsure what the two were arguing about, but investigators are looking into whether the young woman had a history of emotional or mental health issues that might have contributed to the disagreement escalating into violence.

"After the argument, Jordan Williamson left the home. Investigators do not know where he went.

"At some point, however, he returned to the house and shot his sister, Pinkins said. The young man then called their mother.

"`He told Mom she was dead,` Pinkins said. The mother called 911.

"After briefly failing to stop his vehicle for law enforcement, Jordan Williamson pulled over in the 22600 block of Aldine Westfield and shot himself in the head, Pinkins said.

"He later died at an area hospital.

"`Christmas is a time of memories,` Pinkins said. `This is going to be devastating for (the mother) to remember this every Christmas. She lost two children.`"

Four Dead In Upscale Slaughter

"SAN CLEMENTE, CA - Two young sisters, their mother and another women - all of them related - were killed in an upscale gated community in San Clemente as a result of a murder-suicide stemming from a custody dispute, authorities said Tuesday.

"The victims of Monday's slayings were 2- and 4-year-old sisters, their 37-year-old mother and another woman whose status in the family was being withheld pending family notification, said Orange County Sheriff's spokesman Jim Amormino.

"He said the killer was one of the four dead.

"Their names were not released.

"Amormino said the girls' father was in another Orange County community when the tragedy occurred.

"He said the motive behind the murder-suicide appears to have been a child-custody dispute between the girls' mother and father, exacerbated by a custody hearing prior to the deaths.

"The four dead were discovered inside the rented home on Calle Sonador in the exclusive Careyes community just before 2 p.m. Monday, Amormino said, adding that no one else was on the property at the time.

"`It started out as a domestic disturbance about 1:30 p.m. (Monday),` Orange County Sheriff's Lt. Tom Slayton said Monday.

"The disturbance was reported by the man who owns the home and who heard noises, Amormino said. `He knew something was wrong,` he said.

Neighbors "Saddened, But Not Surprised"

"NAPLES MANOR, FL - Two people were dead. Then it was only one.

"On Saturday afternoon, the Collier County Sheriff’s Office confirmed that two people were dead in a murder-suicide following a shooting at a home on Holland Street in Naples Manor. But a few hours later, a Sheriff’s Office spokeswoman said that the incident had suddenly switched to a murder and attempted suicide investigation.

"However, Natalie Felber could not release other details, citing an ongoing death investigation. She did confirm that the second person involved was not dead as originally believed.

"Felber also said that arrests have not been made yet and that deputies were still at the scene.

"Hours prior to the agency’s confusion over whether two people were dead or one, police scanner traffic indicated that deputies had been told that a man was going to kill a woman.

"Yellow crime scene tape stretched across a white stucco fence in front of the circular drive at the corner of Holland Street and Georgia Avenue. The address on the mailbox was 5249 Holland Street.

"The Sheriff’s Office’s SWAT team surrounded the home after a call came in around 3:30 Saturday afternoon of shots fired.

"According to police scanner traffic, a neighbor called in after hearing five shots and a woman screaming.

"Officers were heard to be staging their operations at Georgia Avenue and Holland Street before they moved to Georgia Avenue and Warren Street, according to the scanner.

"Dominic Heiston and his grandmother Diane Heiston had been riding their bikes through the community when they came across the scene at about 4:30.

"They watched it unfold well into the evening and said about two hours passed before law enforcement went into the house. They watched as a woman was taken from the home on a stretcher.

"Having heard that there appeared to have been a murder-suicide, the two were saddened but not surprised.

"The shooting occurred just outside of the Cheverly town limits and is being handled by the county police, according to Cheverly Police.

Fire Concealed Murder/Suicide

"WARRENTON, OR - The Wednesday morning fire at a home in Warrenton was not what caused the death of the couple who lived there.

"Autopsy results determined that Karen DeWilde, 69, died from loss of blood from a knife wound to her throat, according to Clatsop County Chief Deputy District Attorney Ron Brown. He said she was stabbed by her husband, Joseph DeWilde, 73, who started the house on fire and then committed suicide. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Autopsies were conducted by the State Medical Examiner's Office in Portland. The results were released today.

"The fire reported at 4:21 a.m. Wednesday, when a passerby spotted smoke coming from the one story wood fram house at 242 N.W. First Ave. Warrenton firefighters discovered the bodies after they put out the blaze.

"Warrenton Police Officer Len Mossman was the lead investigator for the case, which was considered a possible crime scene until the cause of the victims' deaths and the cause of the fire could be determined. The Clatsop County Major Crime Team was called in to assist Warrenton police because the small department has limited resources. No motive has been made public, but court records show Karen DeWilde filed for divorce last month.

"Warrenton Chief of Police Mathew Workman said today he had not yet heard the results of the fire investigation."

Argument Leads To Attempted Murder/Suicide

Couple Found Dead In Separate Crime Scenes

"NEW ORLEANS, LA - Members of the New Orleans Police Department are investigating the deaths of a 49-year-old man and his 42-year-old wife whose bodies were found this weekend.

"The New Orleans Fire Department said the man -- identified as Hai Cao -- was found dead after a fire at a home that was under construction in the New Orleans East area early Sunday. The woman's body was found in a nearby house. She was identified as Lan Than.

"Police said they were treating the finds a homicide and suicide.

"Rescue crews responded to reports of the fire at 11110 Parkwood Ct., just before 7 a.m.

"Upon arrival, NOFD personnel found a house with smoke and fire coming from the garage area in the front, left side of the dwelling. Fire crews forced entry into the garage of the dwelling, which was under construction and had no utilities servicing the structure.

"Upon extinguishing the fire, firefighters located the body of a man on the floor of the garage near the passenger side of the vehicle parked inside.

"`Officers entered that residence and located her inside that home, suffering from apparent stab wounds to the body,` said Williams. `She was pronounced dead on the scene.`

"Detectives said they were looking into whether the deaths may have been related to a domestic dispute between the victims.

"`They had been having some marital difficulties,` said NOPD Assistant Superintendent Marlon Defillo. `We did find what we believe to be notes that were left by the husband.`

"Relatives were left speechless, and neighbors said they're trying to make sense of what happened.

"Jerry Shot Me"

"SAN ANTONIO, TX - San Antonio police arrested a 41-year-old man early Sunday morning, when he allegedly tried to kill himself and his 25-year-old wife in their North Side home.

"Jerry Contreras is being held in Bexar County Jail on one count of attempted murder; his bond is set at $50,000. He was originally booked by proxy at University Hospital, where both he and his wife, April Contreras, were taken to be treated for gunshot wounds. She remains hospitalized in stable condition, officials said.

"Officers were called to the couple's home in the 1200 block of Basse Road around 1:30 a.m., when a neighbor called police to report that a man had shot his wife in the head in an attempted murder-suicide. April Contreras was in the shower when she sustained a gunshot wound to the jaw, according to a San Antonio Police Department incident report, and her husband of several months was found slumped over, sitting in a pool of blood nearby.

"According to Bexar County records, the couple's marriage license was validated in February 2009. It was not immediately clear what led to the shooting.

"The report states that April Contreras was screaming, `Jerry shot me,` and `help him, he shot himself,` when officers arrived at the home. Police recovered a .22-caliber rifle believed to have been used in the shooting, and the couple was taken to University Hospital, where Jerry Contreras was booked by proxy, officials said.

"He was treated and released to the Bexar County Jail around 7:30 a.m."
