Mom Tries To Poison Kids, Self With Toilet Bowl Cleaner
"PORT ORANGE, FL — Port Orange mother who was arrested after she allegedly made her children drink toilet bowl cleaner is being held without bond at the Volusia County Jail.
"Officers were dispatched to the woman's home on Timber Trail around 10:30 a.m. Saturday.
"`There was like seven police cars lined up here,` said neighbor Dan Yankun.
"According to police, 29-year-old Amelia West had tried to harm herself by drinking toilet cleaner. While investigating, officers learned West had made her 2-year-old and 3-month-old children also drink the toilet cleaner, police said.
"`Thankfully the children are OK. This could have been much worse,` said Department of Children and Families spokesperson John Harrell.
"The children were checked out at Halifax Health Medical Center and later released from the hospital.
"It's unclear what prompted the suicide attempt, police said. DCF is also involved in the investigation.
"`Our work is far from over and we want to find out if there had been any other concerns regarding these children,` said Harrell.
"West was arrested and charged with two counts of attempted murder and two counts of aggravated child abuse.
"`We would be opposed to the mother having any unsupervised contact with these children, given the serious nature of these allegations,` said Harrell.
"West appeared before a judge at the jail Sunday morning and was denied bond."

Couple Found Shot Behind Closed Doors
"PHOENIX, AZ — A Phoenix couple is in the hospital after a man and woman were found inside a home with gunshot wounds.
"Police say they think one of them may have pulled the trigger.
"While detectives are looking into whether this could be an attempted murder/suicide, they're calling it a case of domestic violence.
"The usual peace and quiet of an apartment complex near 28th Street and Camelback was shattered Sunday afternoon by gunfire.
"But police say, it wasn't a crime of opportunity, rather a domestic violence incident that left a man and woman suffering from gunshot wounds.
"`We believe this was entirely inside the apartment and we have no witnesses at this time,` said Phoenix Police Lt. David Laslavic.
"Detectives are still trying to figure out what exactly went on behind closed doors.
"The man was last listed in critical condition. Police say he's in worse shape than the woman, who was listed in stable condition."

"Something Must Have Set Him Off"
"KAILUA, HI — A 36-year-old Kailua man allegedly attempted to take his 2-year-old daughter's life and his own late Christmas afternoon by jumping into his backyard pool.
"Police said the incident occurred between 5 and 5:15 p.m., leaving the man in critical condition. He is suspected of second-degree attempted murder and remained at an area hospital Thursday.
"The girl also survived but her condition was unknown.
"`The baby was OK,` said Ernest Burlen, 79, a neighbor. `EMS took her to the hospital with the father. He wasn't looking too good.`
"Burlen said the father, Thomas Morton, had his daughter on weekends and holidays and seemed to be a good father and a good uncle to his twin brother's three children, who lived in the downstairs portion of their two-story house at 1288 Kina St.
"At the time, Morton's brother and his wife had gone to the airport to drop off their children, who were going to catch a neighbor island flight to visit grandparents.
"Another neighbor, who lives on the adjacent hillside, said she heard loud moans before the incident.
"`It sounded like someone in a lot of pain,` said the woman, 59, who asked not to be named. `I couldn't see anybody. It went on for some time. It sounded like this person was in agony.`
"She then saw the next-door couple scale the fence. The husband `fished the child out of the water and handed her to the wife,` she said.
"The husband jumped back into the water and tried to pull the man out of the deep end, she said.
"But he struggled to bring Morton to the surface, so the hillside neighbor's husband, 58, ran down to help and managed to pull Morton out of the water. He remained unconscious.
"Burlen said Morton was wearing denim trousers, and the child was fully dressed.
"`I know he loved the baby,` Burlen said. `Something must have set him off.`"

Victim Escapes, Shooter Botches Suicide
"SEATAC, WA — Investigators now say a shooting in SeaTac Thursday evening may have stemmed from a bad break-up.
"A woman was shot on 24th Ave. S. and a brief manhunt was launched for the shooter until he was located in a nearby wooded area with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Both survived.
"The 25-year-old victim told police her 26-year-old ex-boyfriend, Samson Berhe, had been following her and opened fire on her car, according to court documents.
"She jumped out and was shot trying to run away from him. As she was cowering in fear, prosecutors say Berhe attempted to reload and pointed the gun at her head, telling her he was going to kill her and that her daughter would have no mother.
"The victim sprang up and punched Berhe in the face and then ran across the street, dodging another bullet until someone let her into a nearby home, prosecutors said.
"Detectives say Berhe took off but crashed his SUV a short time later, and then stole the victim's car. He drove about 1/2 mile then got out and ran off into a wooded area near S. 128th Street and Military Road, police said.
"An intense manhunt ensued and when Berhe was located about 40 minutes later, he shot himself in the chest, police said.
