Wife Dead, Husband Critical After Argument In Home
"HAMMOND, IN — A Northwest Indiana man is in critical condition after allegedly shooting his wife to death before turning the gun on himself Saturday night in Hammond.
"Renata Marquez, 37, shared a home with her mother, 38-year-old husband and 4-year-old daughter in the 2000 block of Lincoln Avenue in Hammond, according to the Lake County, Ind., Coroner's office and Hammond police Lt. Richard Hoyda.
"Marquez's mother heard the couple fighting about 11:45 p.m. and called the man to see if anything was wrong, Hoyda said. The 38-year-old said everything was fine, but when the fighting continued, the older woman went to the married couple's part of the house to check, he said.
"The woman found her daughter shot to death, with her granddaughter and the 38-year-old nearby, Hoyda said.
"The woman grabbed the girl, ran from the house and dialed 911, Hoyda said.
"When police arrived, the man shot himself, Hoyda said. He was taken to a trauma center at an Illinois hospital where he remained in critical condition Sunday afternoon.
"Hoyda said Hammond police are monitoring the man's condition as they continue to investigate, and charges may be filed against the man next week if his condition improves."

Woman Survives Violent Breakup
"ZIONSVILLE, IN — A Whitestown woman survived what police believe was a murder/suicide attempt by her boyfriend, who fatally shot himself Monday.
"Police about 8:20 p.m. found Angie Cantrell, 53, standing outside an apartment in the 6100 block of Westhaven Drive with a gunshot wound to her shoulder, Whitestown Police Chief Dennis Anderson said. Lloyd K. Kruckebery, 53, was found inside the apartment dead of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.
"`She had notified him earlier in the evening their relationship was going to end, and that’s when things became violent,` Anderson said. `She suffered some physical injuries she said were from him, and as she was attempting to flee the apartment, he retrieved a small-caliber handgun from his belongings and began firing several shots inside the apartment, one of which struck her.`
"Anderson assumes that Kruckebery meant to kill Cantrell before killing himself.
"`I don’t know why you would shoot somebody if you were not intending to,` Anderson said. `There’s no way we’ll ever know.`
"Cantrell’s injury appeared not to be serious, he said, but he added she was kept overnight at St. Vincent Hospital for observation.
"She had lived at the address for two years, he said. The man had stayed there more recently for an unknown period of time, he said."

"LOUDON, TN — A Loudon mom is in jail after police say she tried to kill her mentally challenged son, and then herself.
"51-year-old Martha Brewer is charged with attempted first degree murder of her son, 24-year-old Casey Hogan.

Elderly Couple Dead In Murder/Suicide "Arrangement"
"LOVETWON, AL — Houston County Sheriff’s deputies responded to a homicide-suicide in the Lovetown community near Ashford.
"Sheriff Andy Hughes confirmed deputies responded Saturday morning to a murder/suicide at a single-story home on 3125 Houston County Road 55 in the Lovetown community.
"According to a statement from Houston County Sheriff’s Capt. Antonio Gonzalez, deputies responded to a residence in the 3100 block of South Houston County Road 55 to a report of a possible suicide around 9 a.m. Saturday.
"As deputies arrived they discovered two victims, a man and woman, who had suffered fatal gunshot wounds.
"Gonzalez said in the statement the sheriff’s preliminary investigation revealed evidence of a possible suicide pact between the two people, a husband and wife, during which the husband apparently assisted in the death of his wife before taking his own life.
"Houston County Coroner Robert Byrd responded to the home, which he said is located about three miles south of Ashford.
"Byrd said authorities believe the shooting likely happened sometime during the early morning hours Saturday.
Byrd identified the couple as 91-year-old Laurence Dantzer and his 88-year-old wife, Phyllis Dantzer.
"`It looks like a homicide-suicide arrangement,` Byrd said. `It seems like he was very methodical and that they agreed to do it this way.`
"Byrd called the case a first for him because others he’s responded to involved one unwilling party and a willing party when he’s responded to homicide-suicides.
"`I can never remember a case like this in my entire career,` Byrd said. `This seems like they came to a meeting of the minds of how they wanted to end their lives together.`"

Police Suspect Caregiver's Stress Lead To Incident
"RICEVILLE, TN — Two people are dead after an apparent murder/suicide in McMinn County.
"McMinn County Sheriff Joe Guy is calling it a tragic situation involving two elderly people in the same family. The call to 911 come in just before 8 p.m. Tuesday from a home on 352 County Rd. 754 in Riceville.
"`The male person on the line gave the address and said 'murder suicide',` said Sheriff Guy. `That's all they would say was 'murder suicide'.`
"The troubling call came in just minutes before tragedy. When dispatchers tried to call back, the line was busy.
"Officers arrived within minutes. Catherine Dickson, 67, answered the door and said she just got out of the shower.
"`She said she was talking to her husband prior to getting in the shower, and that she couldn't find her husband anywhere,` the Sheriff said.
"Deputies found her 65-year-old husband, Kenneth Dickson, in the backyard with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Dickson's aunt, 85-year-old Helena Spect, was smothered to death in her bed.
"Sheriff Guy said it was a `strange` case. Kenneth Dickson did not have a criminal past. Investigators found notes he had left in the home and learned of a strained relationship between the man and his aunt.
"`He had assumed care for his elderly aunt when no one else would,` Sheriff Guy said, adding the elderly woman was a stroke victim who hadn't been living at the residence for long.
"`She just sort of demanded a certain level of care due to her health problems that perhaps, and we're speculating a little bit here, that the pressure of that just wore on him for some reason and caused him to do what he did.`
