Two Dead In Group Home Shooting

"APOPKA, FL — Deputies said a woman shot and killed a man and then herself after storming into an independent living facility in Apopka on Wednesday.

"Neighbors said they heard a lot of screaming and yelling coming from the home known as Hoepfinger's Hideaway on Apopka Boulevard, but said they were used to the commotion. They had no idea an apparent murder-suicide had just taken place inside.

"Authorities said Eva McDermid, 43, pulled up, went into the residence and shot and killed Markeith Pope, 43, before turning the gun on herself.

"`Scary, but doesn't surprise me,` said neighbor Samantha Dowd.

"Several men and women struggling with mental illnesses live in the multi-unit home.

"`It's something to help them, because they are, you know, on medication and so forth,` said one worker.

"The woman who found the bodies said she was devastated.

“`I proceeded to see him on the couch with a bullet wound to the head. It was like a really bad scene out of 'CSI',` said Kim Snelling.

"The nature of McDermid's and Pope’s relationship is unclear.

"Emergency personnel said they know the house well, saying ambulances and police are constantly called.

"[Sources reveal] deputies were called to the home nearly 40 times this year for issues ranging from battery to mental distress.

"`One of them came over here one time and said her roommate beat her up,` said Dowd.

"Authorities still are trying to determine a motive in Wednesday's killing."

Man Walks In Front Of Train After Dismembering Mother

"FARMINGDALE, NY — A psychotic killer lopped off his mother’s head and dumped her bloody corpse on a Long Island street before jumping in front of a LIRR train in a grisly murder/suicide.

"Derek Ward butchered his mother, Patricia, a 66-year-old college professor, for no apparent reason on Tuesday, authorities said. Ward, a 35-year-old who battled psychiatric problems for the past decade, sat for a short period of time with his mother’s headless corpse inside their gore-spattered Farmingdale apartment prior to taking his own life, Nassau County police Detective Lt. John Azzata said.

“`There were multiple signs of trauma, multiple stab wounds, broken ribs,` the detective said at a news conference. `The weapon used was believed to be a knife. That knife was recovered.`

"As 8 p.m. drew near Tuesday night, Derek Ward dragged his mother’s headless corpse out of their second-floor home, down a staircase, through the building lobby and onto the street, Azzata said. He also carried her head outside.

"After leaving his mother’s torso and head on either side of Secatogue Road, he walked three blocks to the vicinity of the Clinton St. crossing for the Long Island Rail Road and took a dive in front of an oncoming eastbound train.

"Patricia Ward was last seen about four hours before her body was abandoned."

Murder Suspect Shoots Himself In SWAT Standoff

"MCFALL, MO — A man charged with first-degree murder in the death of a person whose body was found in a burning home over the weekend apparently killed himself during a standoff with law enforcement officers in northwest Missouri.

"David Call, 50, of Kansas City, died Monday night inside a home near the Gentry County town of McFall, Trenton Police Chief Tommy Wright said. Call was charged earlier Monday with first-degree murder, armed criminal action, second-degree arson and the abandonment of a corpse after firefighters found a body inside a burning home on Sunday in Trenton.

"Call fired upon officers when they arrived to arrest him and then barricaded himself in the house, said Sgt. Jake Angle of the Missouri State Highway Patrol. Authorities tracked Call to the home in McCall, a Gentry County town of about 90 residents northwest of Pattonsburg, by following his cell phone pings because he was a person of interest in the Trenton case.

"No one was injured during the standoff.

"Negotiators lost contact with Call just after 8 p.m., Angle said.

"`At that time, a SWAT team entered the residence and found the suspect deceased from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot,` Angle said.

"No other details were released about the Trenton case, including the identification and gender of the victim."

Bodies Found In Florida Church

"GRETNA, FL — It's a house of worship, but Gretna's Glory Apostolic Faith Temple is also the site of an apparent murder/suicide complete with crime scene tape circling the property.

"`Little small town like this, you wouldn't expect something like this to happen because it's a close knit community,` said Gretna native Marvin Cloud.

"Cloud says he helped build the dining room building next to the church 30 years ago.

"It's apparently where the bodies were found.

"Cloud also said he helped put blocks around the pastor's trailer.

"The gate leading to that home is also currently blocked off with crime scene tape.

"Gretna Police Chief Carlos De La Cruz says the two deceased people are a man and a woman.

"But at this point, he's not saying who they are or how the suspected murder/suicide unfolded.

"`We believe that one of the victims is a suspect, so there's no reason for the community to be in fear. We feel they are safe at this point and the situation is contained,` said Chief De La Cruz.

"Chief De La Cruz says one reason he hasn't released the names of the two people is he hasn't been able to reach the man's family members who live out of state.

"He also says the woman's family members don't want her name released at this time.

"Autopsy results are pending."

Disabled Man Rescued From Blaze Set By Caregiver

"NACOGDOCHES, TX — Investigators with the Nacogdoches County Sheriff's Office, Texas Rangers, and the city fire marshal's office are investigating a blaze at a two-story home in the Carrizo Creek Subdivision that authorities believe is the result of an “attempted murder-suicide crime.”

"Firefighters found the body of a woman with a gunshot wound to her chest in the home, and they managed to rescue her bedridden common-law husband. The man has since been released from the hospital.

“`The sheriff's office is treating this as an open homicide investigation, but we believe that this was an apparent attempted murder/suicide crime,` Nacogdoches County Sheriff Jason Bridges said in a press release. `All evidence and facts that we have gathered at this time are leading us to believe that Goff intentionally set the house on fire before shooting herself in the living room.`

"The fire occurred on FM 1878, near the entrance of Carrizo Creek Estates.

"A neighbor called in the fire after he or she spotted smoke coming from the residence.

"Precinct 1 Justice of the Peace Kerry Don Williams pronounced Margi Lynn Goff, 61, dead at the scene. The press release stated that investigators noticed that Goff had what appeared to be a self-inflicted, close-contact wound in her chest with burn marks from the weapon. Williams ordered an autopsy be performed on Goff's body.

"Bridges said firefighters found Goff's body in the living room of the home. A pistol was found near her body, he said.

"Firefighters rescued Hal David Parris, a 65-year-old stroke victim, from a medical bed in one of the home's bedrooms. The press release stated that Parris has been bedridden for several years.

“`The sheriff's office has gained information that Goff had been depressed recently and had mentioned committing suicide to her husband,` the press release stated.

"NCSO investigators at the scene established that there was no evidence of forced entry into the home. The press release also said that authorities believe Goff and Parris were the only ones in the home when the incident occurred.

"Investigators told the East Texas news that Parris is unable to speak. However, they said they are that through yes/no questions, Parris can tell them if his common-law wife was responsible for setting the fire."

Two Dead, Cop Wounded After Shooting Spree

"EL PASO, TX — A motive remains unknown for a rampage in which a woman was killed and an El Paso police officer was shot and wounded after stopping a motorist.

"Both might have been at the wrong place at the wrong time.

"The woman, identified by police as Cecilia Diaz, 61, was a caring person who had worked with young children, a friend said.

"El Paso police officials Wednesday identified the suspected shooter as Frank Aparicio, 30, of the 12000 block of Sal Rasura Court in the far East Side.

"About 5 a.m. Tuesday, police found Diaz inside the home where Aparicio lived, a police spokesman said.

"Police have not disclosed the connection between Diaz and Aparicio and how and when Diaz was killed.

"`Investigators believe and physical evidence suggests that Frank Aparicio is responsible for the murder of Cecilia Diaz and the attempted capital murder of Officer Mike Garcia,` a police news release said.

"Person Of Interest" Commits Suicide As SWAT Arrives

"LEDBETTER, TX — The shooting of a 19-year-old mother and her 19-month-old in Fayette County is tied to a standoff where the suspect died of an apparent suicide Monday in Austin, deputies said. The Texas Rangers were called to investigate after a 19-year-old woman was found dead Monday in a home along U.S. Highway 290 near Ledbetter in Fayette County. A 19-month-old child was rushed to Dell Children’s Medical Center in Austin for treatment of a head wound.

"Deputies say they got a 911 call Monday saying a woman and child were lying in blood on the floor of a home. Deputies identified the woman as Justice Martinez. They believe she died as the result of a gunshot wound.

"Fayette County Deputies say they then identified a person of interest who lived in Austin and notified police. Officers went to the man’s address, where he refused to come out. A SWAT team was called in to negotiate, but police say he killed himself instead. Police identified the dead man as Deandre Rashad L. Owens.

"Investigators are still working to determine the cause of the shooting. An autopsy has been ordered for Martinez.

"[Court records show] Martinez had an emergency protection order filed on Jan. 21 against a 25-year-old Owens, but it expired on March 21. Records indicate Martinez did not apply for a permanent protective order after the emergency order expired.

"`We don’t have stuff like that happen in this little town,` said Harley Goerlitz, who has lived in Ledbetter his entire life. `I’ve never seen anything like this in Ledbetter. It’s a calm little town; everyone’s friendly.`"

No Motive In Shooting Spree That Leaves Two Dead, Cop Wounded

"ELPASO, TX — El Paso Police believe the two bodies found at separate locations Tuesday are linked to the shooting of an El Paso Police officer in the Lower Valley Monday night.

"Police say they believe the man, whose identity has not been released, shot the officer last night, then allegedly killed the woman in the home, and then committed suicide.

"Police have not given a motive for the killings or for the shooting of the officer.

"`There's no indication whatsoever, at this point, that the suspect even knew the officer individually,` El Paso Police spokesman Sgt. Chris Mears said. `In fact, what I'm trying to say is we believe at this point that he was targeting an officer, not a specific officer.`

"Police say the man was in a passing car when he shot the officer just before 9 p.m. Monday in the 8100 block of North Loop, near Yarbrough.

"The officer was conducting a traffic stop.

"Witnesses said they saw the car drive past the officer and heard four gunshots.

"The officer, whose name has not been released, is in stable condition at an El Paso hospital.

"`I was sitting down with my girlfriend and we just heard a really loud bang,` said witness Bryan Torres, who lives near a home on the 1200 block of Sal Rasura. That's where police found the woman's body around 5 a.m. Her name has not been released.

"Hours later, around 9:30 a.m., police responded to a call on the 9400 block of Alameda where a body was found with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head.

"`I heard knocking behind our doors where it leads to the alley and I didn't respond or anything to it,` said an employee who works the business in front of where the body was found. `I just ignored it because I didn't want to open it for my security.`

"She said she believes the knocking on her door was that of the garbage man, who initially found the body behind the dumpster.

"`He's a suspect. He committed suicide,` Mears said of the man who allegedly shot the officer and killed the woman. `You're not a victim of suicide. And we believe he's a suspect in a murder, and possibly, in an attempted capital murder of a police officer. So, I wouldn't call him a victim. I can tell you he's a Hispanic male in his 30s.`"

SWAT Team Finds Newlyweds Shot To Death

"TERRE HAUTE, IN — A newlywed in Indiana allegedly shot by her husband following an argument just hours after the wedding called 911 for help just before the shooting but gave dispatchers the wrong address, officials said.

"Kelly Ecker Samson told a 911 dispatcher her husband of just hours, Dr. George `Scott` Samson, was threatening to kill her, and gave the address of their Terra Haute home as 4205 North Creal Street, although the address was actually 4025.

"She then followed up with three more calls, again giving the incorrect address. The last call ended with screams and what sounded like gunshots, dispatchers said.

"Dispatchers attempting to locate the house could find no 4025 N. Creal St. on the map scheme used with the 911 system, and Kelly Samson's smartphone did not have `smart 911` activated on her cell phone, making it impossible to track it.

"When police deputies finally arrived at the right house, they found Kelly Samson dead in a bedroom from multiple gunshots.

"Dr. Samson's father and Kelly Samson's son from a previous marriage were at the house and told police the doctor had `gathered multiple rounds of ammunition, and fled into the basement.`

"Police evacuated the father and son along with Kelly Samson's mother-in-law from the house.

"Police then called in SWAT team who looked into the basement using a remote camera, seeing an unresponsive Dr. Samson who apparently had died from a self-inflicted gunshot to the head."
