Mental Health Issues Preceded Murder/Suicide

"GRANVILLE, OH — Licking County Sheriff Randy Thorp said the deaths of a 42 year old Granville woman and her 8-year-old son appear to be a murder-suicide.

"Deputies responded to a call of a shooting at about 1:15 p.m. Saturday and arrived at 4245 Outville Road to find Joyce Straight, 43, and Jeremy Straight, 8, each dead from gunshot wounds.

"The shootings appear to have taken place sometime between 4:30 a.m. when the woman’s husband left for work and 1:14 p.m. when he returned home.

"Detectives say it appears Mrs. Straight took the life of her son with a firearm and then turned the gun on herself.

"A report from the sheriff indicates that Mrs. Straight may have been experiencing some mental health issues which may have been a factor in the deaths.

"Autopsies will be performed Monday and detectives continue to talk to family members, according to Sheriff Thorp."

Welfare Check Finds Two Dead

"SACRAMENTO, CA — Leslie R. Bellamy, 38, was one of two people found dead in a south Sacramento home Friday afternoon, a Sacramento County Sheriff's Department spokesman said this morning.

"`We are officially investigating these deaths as a murder-suicide,` said Deputy Jason Ramos.

"The coroner's office has yet to release the identity of the man, believed to be in his 60s, whom authorities allege killed Bellamy and then himself.

"Ramos declined to comment on the manner of death for either person, or whether a murder weapon had been found. Both bodies exhibited trauma, he said, and were located in separate rooms upstairs in Bellamy's rental home on Malt Court. There were no signs of forced entry.

"Deputies went to the Malt Court home around 2 p.m. Friday, after Bellamy's employer notified authorities that she had not come to work that morning. Eventually, homicide investigators were called to take over the scene.

"The homeowner, Trong Nguyen, said he was not very familiar with Bellamy. He said that she had lived at the home with a boyfriend. He reported `no problems whatsoever` with the couple since Bellamy had rented the home in May.

"Jeny Ryon said she was a friend of Bellamy's. She described the victim as `a caring friend and a loving mother` to two, including a son who recently enlisted in the Air Force. Bellamy chose nursing as her profession, Ryon said, because she loved helping people.

"`She would always give her all in a relationship,` Ryon said."

Bodies Found After House Fire

"WATERBURY, CT — A 59-year-old Waterbury man shot and killed his 39-year-old daughter, doused the couch in accelerant and ignited it and then shot himself, police said.

"Police found the bodies of Audley Morgan, 59, and his daughter, Suzette Morgan, 39, while investigating a fire at 78 Clover Street on Thursday evening.

"Firefighters had a difficult time getting into the house because the doors and windows were secured with plywood and steel.

"The Morgans were from Jamaica, neighbors said, and believed the government was after them.

"Fire officials said the home should have been vacant.

"`The building was considered to be a vacant structure. The power was shut off to the building and the building was fortified to keep vagrants or persons out,` Asst. Fire Chief Mike Couture said.

"Neighbors said the victims who lived in the house were known as `The Umbrella Guys.` They were private people who weren't out in the public much, Hotchkiss said.

"`I only got as far as we are here, and then the windows blew out. By that time, the house was engulfed in flames. Flames were shooting out,` Ed Hotchkiss, a neighbor, said. `I saw the man mowing the lawn one time with just a canopy over him.`

"The Office of the Chief Medical Examiner performed autopsies and said it appeared that the father shot the daughter in the head, started the fire and then shot himself in the head. "

Death And Cigarettes

"CENTER POINT, AL — A Center Point man shot his girlfriend three times and then killed himself after an argument that her trip to the store for cigarettes took too long.

"Around 12:45 a.m. today, Jefferson County sheriff's deputies received a 911 call from a hysterical girl saying that her mother had been shot at 1665 4th Place N.W. While deputies were en route to the home, they came up on a Chevrolet Blazer flashing its lights at them. The driver's head, face and shoulders were covered in blood, and she told them she had been shot, said Chief Deputy Randy Christian.

"The victim, 31-year-old Angela McCall Gulley, was walking around and laying across one of the deputy's patrol cars until she was asked to sit down. She was then taken to UAB Hospital.

"Deputies went inside the home and found blood on the door and floors, as well as five shell casings.

"Gulley's boyfriend, 29-year-old Henry Arnold, was dead on the floor.

"Gulley's 13-year-old daughter told deputies she was asleep when she was awakened by a gunshot. She ran to the front room to see Arnold shoot himself in the head, and called 911.

"Gulley told deputies that she and her sister had been drinking beer together at the home. Arnold got off work about 8:30 p.m. and also started drinking. Her sister left, and Gulley left to go to the store to buy cigarettes.

"When she returned, Arnold jumped her, wanting to know where she went and why it took her so long. She said she had only been gone about 30 minutes.

"During the argument, Arnold pulled a gun and began firing while they were in the living room. She said she ran out the door with her kids and cordless phone and called 911. She said she heard another shot but did not go back into the house.

"She got into her car and drove around the block trying to get help until police arrived.

"Gulley was shot in the right side of the head, the right side of her neck and her right shoulder.

"She is listed in serious condition at UAB Hospital."

Mother And Son Escape Dad's Wrath

"CORTLAND, IL — A man suspected of shooting two people in a Cortland home Thursday night before killing himself was the father and estranged husband of the victims, police said Friday.

"Michael L. Sebourn, 46, of Redfield, Ark., was pronounced dead at 3 a.m. Friday from an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound at the home of his estranged wife.

"Before shooting himself, Sebourn had fired several other shots, two of which struck his son and estranged wife. His mother, 45, was struck in the pelvic area and transferred to a Rockford hospital with a nonlife-threatening injury, according to DeKalb County Sheriff Roger Scott.

"Scott said authorities believe Sebourn had lived in the Cortland home at 11 E. Railroad Avenue until the couple separated about two years ago. They believe he left his home in Arkansas either Tuesday or Wednesday to come to Illinois, where he arrived unexpectedly.

"Sebourn was in the house when his wife and son arrived home shortly before 10 p.m. Scott said there was no evidence of forced entry.

"Shortly after, a struggle ensued between Sebourn and his son, and his wife ran outside to flag down a Cortland police officer who was across the street on routine patrol.

Spree Shooter Kills 7 Before Shooting Himself

"GRAND RAPIDS, MI — A gunman opened fire in two Michigan homes Thursday, killing his daughter, ex-girlfriend and five other people before leading police on a high-speed chase and taking hostages inside a stranger's home.

"The five-hour standoff ended when he killed himself as authorities were telling him how to surrender.

"The hostages were released unharmed, and 34-year-old Rodrick Shonte Dantzler died at the scene of a self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head, police said.

"The manhunt for Dantzler began earlier in the day after four people were found dead in one Grand Rapids home and three were discovered in another across town. Two of the dead were children.

"`It makes no sense to try to rationalize it, what the motives were,` Police Chief Kevin Belk said. `You just cannot come up with a logical reason why someone takes seven peoples' lives.`

"Following the discovery of the bodies, Dantzler led officers on a high-speed chase, crashed his car and took hostages he did not know inside a random home, police said. Dozens of officers with guns drawn cordoned off a neighborhood near a small lake in the northern part of the city and shut down nearby Interstate 96.

"During the standoff, Dantzler fired sporadically at officers and inside the house. He vacillated between threatening to shoot the hostages and pleading with police to take him out, even asking negotiators whether there were snipers outside the home and where he should stand, Belk said.

"But he changed course after several hours and asked how he could surrender. Belk said officers were talking with him on the phone about how to turn himself in when they heard the gunshot.

"`At the time the incident occurred, he was talking about coming out, giving himself up,` Belk said. `Obviously he decided at the last moment to fire the gun.`

"The names of the dead were not immediately released. Autopsies were scheduled for Friday."

Cornered Killer Shoots Himself At Bus Station

"RICHMOND, VA — The man wanted in the killing of an off-duty New Jersey corrections officer committed suicide in Richmond, Va. this morning after a brief run-in with the U.S. Marshal’s Service this morning, authorities said.

"Police received a call from LG&E about the shooting at 1:35 p.m. at the South Service Center in the 4600 block of Jennings Lane, Biven said.

"The supervisor was in charge of the service center, which employs 50 people and dispatches LG&E trucks and equipment, said Chip Keeling, a spokesman for the utility. He said the employee and his supervisor, who police said were both in their 50s, were longtime employees.

"Keeling called the shooting `a terrible tragedy.`

"`I am shook up,` he said. `Our employees are extra close.`

"`I would never say anything is open and shut,` said Lt. Barry Wilkerson, the head of LMPD’s homicide unit, `but this appears to be an open and shut case.`"
