Restaurant Slasher Hangs Himself In Jail

"MAGEE, MS — A man hanged himself in the Magee city jail after stabbing his girlfriend to death at a fast food restaurant, authorities said.

"Magee Police Chief Randy Crawford said 31-year-old Robert James Williams attacked his girlfriend, 21-year-old Jessica Cromwell, at the Wendy's restaurant where she worked.

"Simpson County Coroner Terry Tutor said video surveillance footage from the restaurant shows that Williams pushed by a manager into the restaurant kitchen shortly after 5 p.m. Tuesday. He attacked Cromwell with a knife, stabbing her multiple times.

"`It was all on film,` Tutor told The Associated Press on Wednesday.

"Williams was taken to Magee General Hospital, where she died.

"Other Wendy's employees followed Williams and called police. Crawford said in a news release that police caught Williams less than a block from the restaurant on U.S. 49., using a stun gun to subdue him. Crawford said police recovered a knife when they arrested Williams, arresting him fewer than two minutes after employees called 911.

"Williams was taken to the Magee jail, where Crawford said police stripped his bloody clothing to hold as evidence, leaving him wearing only boxer shorts and ankle socks.

"After 8 p.m. Tuesday, Williams was found hanged, with his shorts and socks tied together as a noose.

"Both bodies have been taken to Jackson for autopsies."

Suspected Shoe Killer Found Dead

"CHESAPEAKE, VA — A woman who was dropped off unconscious at Chesapeake Regional Medical Center and then died earlier this month was likely bashed in the head with a shoe. And the man police believe may have been responsible for her death committed suicide this week.

"On Oct. 7, Taylor Mycal Alexandria Fields, 21, was put on life support after a man dropped her off at the hospital in what was considered to be a domestic assault, according to one of three search warrants filed in the case.

"Fields died on Oct. 9, and police have not yet announced a manner of death. However, the cause of Fields' death was a subdural hematoma—bleeding in the skull—according to the medical examiner's office. A subdural hematoma usually is caused by severe head trauma.

"Police filed a search warrant to test Fields' body for a possible sexual assault, according to one of the affidavits filed in Chesapeake Circuit Court. They found evidence of foreign body fluids and hair.

"Additionally, Fields' body appeared to have pattern injuries that looked like they were caused by the sole of a shoe, according to one affidavit filed by Chesapeake police Detective Tom Downing, a homicide investigator.

"While Fields was still in the hospital, Downing interviewed Trevaun Cortez Lockett, a 28-year-old whom he believes lived with Fields in an apartment in the 700 block of Tapestry Park Loop behind the hospital, according to an affidavit.

"An iPad, purse and a cell phone bill belonging to Fields were found at the apartment they shared, according to a search warrant inventory.

"Lockett told the detective he had been playing video games before finding Fields unconscious in the bathtub, according to an affidavit. Lockett was the only one in the apartment with her, the affidavit states.

"Lockett also told police their friendship was platonic and denied having sex with her, according to the affidavit.

"Police wanted to collect evidence from Lockett to see if it matched the evidence found on her body. But on Tuesday, in the midst of the investigation, Lockett committed suicide, said police spokeswoman Kelly O'Sullivan. Police continue to investigate."

Suicide Of Suspect Closes Case On Murder

"PRINCESS ANNE, MD" — A 55-year-old Salisbury, Md., teacher whose body was found Sunday was murdered by her husband, who later committed suicide, Maryland State Police said today.

"The body of Alice E. Davis was found in a wooded area in Princess Anne. Her husband of 25 years, Jess Davis, was found dead in their home in Allen, Md., on Sept. 7.

"He had reported his wife missing on Sept. 4.

"In a joint statement with the Wicomico Bureau of Investigation, police said investigators determined Jess Davis was in the area of Princess Anne on Sept. 5 before he reported her missing. He later called a taxi and was picked up near where their car was later found.

"An autopsy determined Alice Davis died from blunt force trauma from a hard object such as a hammer, but the exact object used to kill her could not be determined."

July Murder, September Suicide

"MACON, GA — Jones County sheriff’s investigators are treating the shooting death of a homicide suspect as a suicide, officials said Wednesday.

"Sheriff’s investigator Kenny Gleaton said Debra Warren Brown, 47, was found by a family member at her home Tuesday afternoon with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Gleaton said his office is waiting for an official determination by the medical examiner.

"Gleaton declined to say who found the body or if there was a suicide note at the scene, citing the ongoing investigation.

"Brown was arrested July 9 and charged with felony murder in the shooting death of her husband, Mitchell Reid Brown, 52, at their residence at 592 Creekside Drive in Jones County. During that incident, deputies responded to a 911 call at 3:30 a.m. and found Mitchell Brown suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso during an apparent domestic altercation. He died at the scene.

"Debra Brown was released on bond about two weeks after her arrest, Gleaton said. She was indicted in August. Gleaton said a court date had not been set for her trial.
Gleaton said the gun used in the apparent suicide was different than the one used in the death of her husband. That gun was being held as evidence.

"With Debra Brown’s death, Gleaton said that will close the book on the investigation into Mitchell Reid Brown’s death.

"`There are a few things we’ll follow up with,` Gleaton said. `But there won’t be a prosecution on it, obviously.`"
