"DELAND, FL — Volusia County deputies make a shocking discovery inside of a DeLand home."Neighbors of Leatha Benio, 78, and Stanley Benio, 68, who were found dead inside their Glenwood Road home Wednesday morning, were shocked to see crime scene tape draped around the house.
"Jill Miller [said] the Benios were a loving couple, although Leatha did suffer from a number of medical problems.
"The Volusia County Sheriff's Office received a 911 call just before 6:30 a.m. Wednesday. The man on the phone told a dispatcher he just shot his wife and was about to kill himself. Deputies were immediately sent to the address, where they found an open door.
"Brandon Haught, a spokesman for the sheriff's office [said] dispatchers are trained to try to keep people on the phone and try to de-escalate a situation but `if someone has their mind made up, there's only so much you can do over the phone.`
"The man told the dispatcher both he and his wife had been in pain and did not want to go through it anymore."
