Couple Jumps Off Bridge After Murdering Relative

"SUFFERN, NY — An apparent murder and double suicide that ended with a Suffern, N.Y., couple leaping from the George Washington Bridge on Monday was rooted in a months-long family dispute over money and possible drug use, police said Wednesday.

"Gary Crockett, 41, and his girlfriend, Nicki Hunt, 40, jumped off the bridge around 11 a.m. Monday. Hours later, a relative found the body of Hunt's 70-year-old uncle, William Valenti, who had been strangled in his Suffern home.

"The discovery set off a hunt for Valenti's green Chevrolet Malibu. When Suffern police heard that a couple in their forties jumped off the bridge, they immediately suspected that the suicides were related to the murder, Suffern Police Chief Clarke Osborn said at a news conference Wednesday morning.

"Valenti’s body was discovered in the bedroom at 88 Washington Ave. where he had lived with Crockett and Hunt, police said. The couple appeared to have recently taken between $1,000 and $1,500 from Valenti’s bank account through withdrawals and forged checks, police said. Valenti apparently gave them a deadline to repay the money but they didn’t do it.

"Police found two notes written by Hunt at the home. One said she and Crockett took `Uncle Bill` to the hospital. The other was from Hunt to her four children, apologizing for the life they have led and for her actions. Police would not reveal any more details from the note."

Victim Stable After Being Shot Multiple Times

"KANSAS CITY, KS — One man died and a woman suffered critical injuries Monday in what police are calling a disturbing case of domestic violence. It happened at 51st and Leavenworth Road. As of Tuesday morning, the woman was in stable condition.

"Witnesses described a horrible scene just before 8 a.m. as people were headed to work and school. Witnesses told [reporters] they saw a man and woman arguing, with the woman trying to get away from the man. "Perhaps most disturbing for everyone involved was seeing the woman’s eight-year-old daughter only a few feet away. The girl ran over to the two bodies after the shooting and started crying.

"`Beating on a woman anyway, then dragging her for everybody to see,` said Brenda Mosley, who witnessed the crime. `That’s not nice, and to do it in front of a little girl? That’s a coward.`

"Police confirm that the woman has two children, the eight-year-old and a three-year-old. Witnesses said she may have been bringing the children to a neighbor when the dispute started. Police say the woman is critically wounded. The man is dead. Mosley and others say it was a terrible thing for them to see. Dead Cops Found In Home

"INDIANAPOLIS, IN — Indianapolis police officers were grieving and reeling Thursday as word spread through the force that two of their own were dead—a husband and wife who had separated, and died in a murder/suicide.

"Sgt. Ryan Anders and officer Kim Carmack were found dead about 5:40 p.m. inside a home on 2441 Inishmore Court, near West 21st Street and Country Club Road on the Far Westside. Public Safety Director Troy Riggs said the two died of gunshot wounds.

"Riggs said that someone had called police for a welfare check at that home. Once SWAT officers were at the scene but before they entered the home, police learned that a neighbor heard gunshots earlier that day, Riggs said. Police are unsure how long Anders and Carmack had been dead before they were found.

"Carmack had obtained a protective order against Anders, and he was on administrative leave because of a domestic-violence issue, Indianapolis Police Chief Rick Hite said at a news conference. The couple's divorce was finalized last October, court records show.

"`We had concerns about both of them,` Hite said. `They were counseled. They were given directions, and we also were made aware of his (Anders') whereabouts.`

"In addition, Anders' department-issued weapons had been taken from him, although it was not clear when that happened. Riggs said it is standard procedure to temporarily take away the firearm of an officer being investigated for domestic violence accusations.

"Anders had been offered help and his whereabouts were being monitored with technology, which Hite did not describe.

"But the scene at the home showed the determination involved: A door was forced open, Hite said.

"`That speaks volumes.`"

"Sammy Chumley entered the restaurant, where his ex-wife worked, and began shooting, Cleveland said. Chumley’s ex-wife protested as the shots began, Cleveland said.

Deadly Interlude

"MONTOURSVILLE, PA — A romantic interlude that went bad is what state police believe may have led to the shooting death of a Williamsport man.

"Investigators Monday said they may never know all the facts because the woman they think shot Edward Joseph White Jr., 78, committed suicide about 10 hours later.

"A state trooper said he saw Jacqueline Delguerico, 28, of Williamsport, shoot herself in the head as she was driving east in the 1800 block of East Third Street in Loyalsock Twp. with city police cruisers following her.

"Troopers said she was driving her car, not White's car, as Williamsport Assistant Police Chief Tim Miller had reported Sunday. The car veered off Third Street into the side of a building owned by Schneider Valley Farms.

"Trooper Tyson Havens said Monday White considered Delguerico his girlfriend. They had driven separately to Walmart in Montoursville Saturday night and a video shows the two argued before he got into her car, he said.

"About 11:45 p.m. Saturday, borough police were sent to Fairview Drive north of Mulberry Street for what was thought was a hit-run victim.

"When emergency personnel discovered White had been shot, state police took over the investigation. White was pronounced dead at 12:40 a.m. Sunday at Williamsport Regional Medical Center.

"Police had notified surrounding police departments to be on the lookout for Delguerico’s car and a city police officer spotted it about 10:30 a.m.

"She refused to stop and continued at normal speed out of the city to where she shot herself as other units were converging, police said.

"The hand gun Delguerico used to kill herself had been reported stolen in South Williamsport last week. Borough Police Chief Robert Hetner said officers had been trying to locate her to question her about the theft.

"A state parole official said officers also had been looking for Delguerico. She was on supervision on theft and drug paraphernalia charges from Lackawanna County, he said.

"Delguerico had voluntarily appeared at a district judge’s office last Monday to answer a summons on state police theft and receiving stolen property charges. She was accused of stealing $267 from a restaurant where she had been a manager.

"Six suicide notes were found in her car, Havens said, leading investigators into believing she intended to take her own life.

"Whether someone else was in the car at the time of the shooting is part of the ongoing investigation, police said."

Sister Stabs Brother To Death, Botches Suicide Bid

"RED BANK, TN — A Red Bank man is dead after police said his younger sister stabbed him to death. Red Bank Police Chief Tim Christol said it appears to be a botched murder/suicide.

"It happened in the 500 block of Lullwater Rd. shortly before 7 a.m. on Tuesday. Police found Glenda Forrest, 63, in her bedroom with self-inflicted stab wounds to the stomach. Her brother, Donald `Donnie` Barnes, 65, was found stabbed to death in his bedroom.

"It started with a welfare check Tuesday morning, after a concerned cousin told police Forrest had called and admitted to killing her older brother.

"`She let them know that she just killed her brother, and she wanted to make sure somebody would come and watch the dogs,` Christol said.

"When police arrived, they heard Forrest in pain inside of the home. She wouldn't answer the door, Christol said, so officers forced their way in. The siblings lived together at the home on Lullwater Rd., and neighbors said the two had been fighting for years.

"Tuesday morning's fight ended in murder.

"`We're working off the theory of a murder/suicide right now,` Christol said. `The injuries to [Forrest] seemed to be a lot more than superficial.`
