Bad Dad Drowns Son, Botches Suicide
"WEST PLAINS, MO — A south-central Missouri man is charged with first-degree murder and other felonies in the drowning of his 4-year-old son at their West Plains home.
"Howell County authorities say 38-year-old Eric Chappelle remained hospitalized Tuesday with what police described as minor, self-inflicted wounds. He allegedly tried to assault officers who went to his home Monday afternoon after co-workers reported he failed to show up for work.
"KYTV reports Chapelle was charged Tuesday and ordered held on $500,000 bond. Police said Chapelle admitted drowning the boy in a bathtub because he wanted to kill his son and himself after being accused of molesting two female relatives.
"The 4-year-old's name has not been released. There was no attorney listed for Chappelle.
"Police said Chapelle and the boy's mother were recently divorced."

10 Year Old Escapes From Watery Grave
"NEWBURGH, NY — Some quick thinking from 10-year-old Lashaun Armstrong saved his own life Tuesday night, but he could not get help quickly enough to save the lives of his three siblings or his mother, who drove the family minivan into the Hudson River just before 8 p.m.
"Lashaun escaped out a window after his mother, Lashandra Armstrong, 25, drove the car down the boat launch with four kids aboard, reportedly following a domestic disturbance. Lashaun swam to shore and ran for help.
"At about 7:50 p.m., Fire Chief Michael Vatter said, Lashaun ran into a nearby firehouse, soaking wet and so despondent he could hardly speak, and told what had happened. He had been taken there by a passerby who saw him after he came out of the river.
"Responders found the minivan submerged in about 10 feet of water, four dead inside.
"Police said they believe the children — boys Landon and Lance Pierre, ages 5 and 2, and girl Lainaina Pierre, 11 months — were alive when the minivan went into the water.
"`There is no logic,` Mayor Nicholas Valentine said this morning. `No one should do anything like this. Find another way out of it, especially with the children. Find help.`"

Cops Won't Speculate On Murder/Suicide
"CUPERTINO, CA — A 50-year-old Cupertino man whose body was found with his wife inside their ranch-style home on Saturday died from `an apparent gunshot wound` to the head, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said today.
"The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the identities of the couple as Susan and Gary Longdon. The sheriff's office has not offered a final ruling on the couple's deaths, but did say it would be classified as either a murder/suicide or joint suicide.
"Although the medical examiner's office determined that 51-year-old Susan Longdon suffered blunt force trauma to her head, further testing must be done before a cause of death can be determined, said Sgt. Jose Cardoza of the sheriff's office.
"Court documents show that Susan Longdon had filed for divorce from her husband three months ago. The couple was married on Dec. 31, 1981 and had been separated since September, according to court documents.
"On Saturday at about 2:30 p.m., sheriff's deputies discovered the bodies after responding to a report of a `suspicious circumstance` at a home on 10398 Westacres Drive."

"Wonderful People" Found Dead In Home
"CONCORD, CA — Police are investigating a possible murder-suicide involving two longtime partners discovered Monday night, marking the city's second homicide in as many days.
"The bodies of Frederik Meurer, 32, of Concord, and 32-year-old Miranda Pretoli were found by officers at about 8:30 p.m. after they got a distress call from a home on 2321 Bedford Road, police said.
"They found Meurer and Pretoli laying on the floor of the residence, dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Police did not release a motive or the circumstances leading up to the shootings, citing an ongoing investigation.
"Next-door neighbor Gene Traversaro said he was home when the bodies were found, but he did not hear any noise or commotion suggesting violence. No one else is believed to have been involved in the deaths, which shocked a neighborhood that warmly remembered the pair.
"Meurer and Pretoli lived together in a rear building on the property while Meurer's mother lived in the main home, neighbors said. In court records, Meurer described Pretoli as his "life-long partner."
"Traversaro, a 30-year resident of the serene street, said he has lived next door to the Meurer family for a quarter of a century and described the deceased as well liked in the neighborhood.
"`They're wonderful people,` Traversaro said. `I get this empty feeling knowing they're gone.`"

"Intensely Supervised" Ex-Con Kills Woman, Self
"WHEAT RIDGE, CO — A man who fatally shot a woman before killing himself was identified today as a prison parolee who had served time for attempted murder.
"David Atencio, 52, fatally shot Anna Villalobos, 45, on Thursday in a Wheat Ridge house before shooting himself inside the crawl space of the same home, according to the Wheat Ridge Police Department.
"`Atencio had been released from prison in April of 2008 after being sentenced in 1990 for attempted murder out of Jefferson County,` police said in a media release.
"Atencio, who worked for a Denver area scaffolding company, was on `intensely supervised house arrest` at the time of the murder-suicide, police said.
"On Thursday, the victim's son Joshua Butierres, 23, had gone to the home, in the 4400 block of Harlan Court, to check on his mother, police said. When the Butierres arrived at the house, Atencio fired a gun at him.
"Police surrounded the home and when SWAT members entered, about 7 hours and 30 minutes later, they found Atencio's body in the crawl space.
"Atencio shot and killed Villalobos prior to her son going to check on her," police said. "Atencio then killed himself during the stand-off."
"Villalobos, who worked as a receptionist at an insurance company for several years, was found dead in the garage.
"Police evacuated a bank and several homes, and a nearby school was placed on lockdown, as the incident unfolded. No one else, including Butierres, was hit by gunfire.
"Police withheld the gunman's name until his family had been notified of his death.
"Villalobos and Atencio had lived together for about a year, said Lt. Dave Pickett, and officers had not been called to the address on any prior complaints."

"Police say both people died of gunshot wounds. Detectives did find a weapon on the scene.
"At first glance, police say, it appears to be a murder suicide but they’re not 100-percent sure.
"`There are several things, evidence that doesn’t point to an exact murder suicide, so we’re not disclosing anything at this point. We’re not speculating as to what we have,` said Capt. Suarez.
"Police did say they are not looking for a suspect.
"The names of the victims have not been released."

"He Kept The Yard Good And Clean"
"OKLAHOMA CITY, OK — Police are investigating what they think was a murder-suicide in west Oklahoma City.
"The body of Cheryl Barden, 55, was found about 7 p.m. Thursday at 12301 SW 14, according to a news release from Oklahoma City police.
"A second body was found at the scene, but that name was not released pending notification of next of kin. Both people had been shot to death, police said.
"Police think the deceased male shot Barden and then took his own life.
"Neighbors said the homeowner's red pickup had been parked in the driveway for several days with a flat tire.
"Melissa Pickrell, 26, said she had never seen a woman at the house.
"`He was just a sweet guy,` Pickrell said. `I'm just really surprised right now, really shocked.`
"Neighbor Sonny Barthold, 46, said the man had lived in the house more than 10 years and kept to himself.
"`He was a good man,` Barthold said. `He kept the yard good and clean. Didn't have any problems with him. For something like this to happen, it is a disaster.`
"Barthold said one of Barden's relatives was looking for her and called police Thursday night after going to the house."
