Two Dead After Teen Goes On Shooting Rampage

"SPARKS, NV — A popular school teacher and veteran of the Afghan conflict was shot dead after trying to halt a playground shooting rampage by an armed teenage boy who then killed himself.

"Two other boys were injured as screaming children fled for their lives from Sparks Middle School in a suburban community on the edge of Reno in western Nevada just before morning bell on Monday. After the latest school shooting to rock America, Michael Landsberry was described by police as a `hero` for his attempts to persuade the gun-toting student to put his weapon down.

"The `shooter-suspect`, who was aged 13 or 14, had pulled out a pistol and shot at least one of the injured boys at about 7:15am when Mr Landsberry rushed out of a nearby building, witnesses said.

"The mathematics teacher, 45, a military veteran who served two deployments in Afghanistan and leaves a widow and two step-daughters, approached the boy and urged him to put the gun down.

"But the student shot him dead and continued firing. He killed himself before police arrived, although officials did not initially confirm his wounds were self-inflicted."
