"`It's sad. It's a sad world we live in, sad state of affairs we live in these days,` said neighbor Dave Vaicunas.

He Came In Through The Bedroom Window

"PAWTUCKET, RI — A Massachusetts man shot and killed a Pawtucket man and then turned the gun on himself after finding his ex-girlfriend in the other man's bedroom Monday night, according to Pawtucket police.

"Robert Amado, 43, of 22 Plymouth St., in Carver, shot into the bedroom window of the first-floor apartment at 96 North Bend St. after seeing his ex-girlfriend and 45-year-old Timothy J. Robillard inside, said Maj. Arthur Martins.

Chef Confesses After Botched Self-Immolation

"VIRGINIA BEACH, VA — Erin Hunt was supposed to open a new restaurant last week: Off the Hook in Chesapeake. He already had begun working with the staff.

"But a week and a half ago, Hunt died in a way that shocked family and friends who knew him as a mild-mannered chef and devoted father of three. Police said he assaulted a woman he knew on a Sunday evening at a home in the Courthouse Estates neighborhood, then set himself on fire in the backyard. He was 38.

"`It paints a different picture than what he was,` said Jennifer Carpinelli, owner of Off the Hook. `He was really big into dog rescues. He had a blind dog. He took that dog because no one would take it.... He was easy to get along with, understanding and helpful.`

"He was also an extremely talented chef, she said.

"Police on Friday released further details about the attack. In an email, Detective Justin Cole said Hunt and the woman were living together and had agreed he would move out of the house that day. He hadn't removed his belongings by the time she got home, and she asked why he had not left.

"That's when he hit her several times in the head with a dumbbell, Cole said. She ran outside screaming, and neighbors called 911. Meanwhile, Cole said in the email, Hunt came outside, then went back in the house alone. Shortly after, he was seen engulfed in flames in the backyard, a gas can nearby.

"Neighbors put out the flames with a garden hose, and Hunt told them and police he had intended to kill the woman and himself, Cole said. He was taken to a hospital and died a few days later."

Parking Lot Argument Turns Fatal

"LITHIA SPRINGS, GA — Douglas County Sheriff’s Office investigators are looking into an apparent murder/suicide just after 7 a.m. Sunday morning.

"Investigators say that 48-year-old John Malone had just arrived at work at J.B. Hunt Trucking on 648 Sydney Court in Lithia Springs Sunday morning. A woman that investigators say had been dating Malone for about 18 months confronted him there. A verbal altercation became heated and that’s when Lt. Jamie Harrell said the woman got a gun.

"`There were multiple witnesses to the shooting,` Harrell said. `Statements indicate that she apparently produced a handgun and shot Mr. Malone multiple times. She left the scene so we began to look for her vehicle. We found the car in a parking lot about a quarter of a mile away. She was found inside and had suffered what appeared to be a single, self-inflicted gunshot to the chest.`

"The woman was identified as 41-year-old Nicole Prater of Riverdale. Harrell said that Malone had an Austell address.

"Douglas County Coroner Randy Daniel said that Malone had been shot at least three times and was pronounced dead on the scene at 8:44 a.m. He said that Prater was pronounced dead at 9:45 a.m. where investigators had located her vehicle.

"Daniel said that both Malone and Prater were taken to the Georgia State Crime Lab for autopsies. Harrell said with the number of witnesses, it appears to be an open-and-shut case.

"`It appears to be open and shut, but we still have a few loose ends to tie up,` Harrell said. `It’s a tragic thing, but all indications are that it is the result of a relationship that had gone bad that resulted in a murder/suicide.`"

Deputies Find Decomposing Bodies In Apartment Complex

"KATY, TX — There are lots of questions after a man and woman were found dead inside a Katy apartment. Investigators are looking into the possibility of a murder/suicide.

"Deputies say there doesn't appear to be any sign of forced entry. They are still trying to figure out the events leading up to this double homicide.

"A disturbing discovery has plagued residents at the Grand Villas apartment complex with questions after Harris County homicide detectives found two bodies inside a downstairs unit.

"`I didn't hear any fights, I didn't hear any yelling screaming or anything else,` said one resident.

"He says he didn't hear anything, but he did smell a foul odor.

"`Just like bad food,` he said.

"The resident told [reporters] the smell was stronger coming from his next-door neighbor's unit.

"`The neighbor next door asked me to come over to her apartment to see if she had a smell, and I said, 'Yes, it's coming from the bedroom,'` he said.

"Hours later officers were called out for a welfare check and found a man and woman inside who they say had been dead for several days.

"`Right now we're trying to determine the exact cause of death. Right now it doesn't appear that a stranger did anything so it may be a murder/suicide, but its hard to determine at this point,` said Sgt. Robert Spurgeon, with the Harris County Sheriff's Office.

"I knew the guy and we talked a couple of times," said the resident. "Everyone knows who lives here, we recognize each other."

"Residents say it's still hard to imagine what led up to this double homicide inside their quiet community.

"Neighbors tell us the man that lived inside of the unit was nice and made friendly conversation. People who live in this area say they are shocked.

"Deputies have not released the names of the two adults found inside the apartment. Officers [told reporters] the male was the resident who occupied that unit."

"IRONWOOD, MI — Ironwood authorities have identified the man and woman dead in what they say appears to be a murder-suicide.

"The Ironwood Public Safety Department responded to 88 Burt Street in the Jessieville area of the city around around 7:20 a.m. Monday. Sgt. Adam Clemens told Eyewitness News that the couple's son called after finding them dead in the yard.

"According to authorities, David Rudolph Mukavitz, 83, shot and killed his wife Constance Helen Mukavitz, 77, before killing himself. Clemens said two rifles were involved, but could not tell us how many shots were fired.

"Authorities said both were in ill health which may have been a contributing factor.

"`This is highly unusual,` Clemens said. `I've been a police officer for 19 years and this is the first time I've ever had something like this.`

"The Michigan State Police Crime Lab and Gogebic County Prosecutor's Office are assisting in the investigation."

Mom, Two Young Daughters Found Dead In Apartment

"WEST MONROE, LA — Police here believe a woman took the lives of her two young daughters then committed suicide.

"About 12:40 p.m. Saturday, West Monroe police investigated a call about an unresponsive person at Camellia Trace Apartments on 1616 Arkansas Road. Found dead were Katelin Dulaney, 26, and her daughters Adeleen Forbis, 4, and Laila Forbis, 3, authorities said.

"`From initial findings, it appears Katelin took the lives of her two children and then took her own,` Police Chief Jeff Terrell says in a statement. `All bodies have been sent for autopsies to Little Rock, Arkansas. Next of kin have been notified.`

"Pointing to stuffed animals placed outside the taped-off apartment door, neighbor Kimberly Walters said her children frequently played with Adeleen and Laila. She described Dulaney as `content,` saying she kept to herself but always watched her children closely. Dulaney’s girls liked to wear `pretty dresses` and play in the parking lot on their scooters, Walters said."
