"Nothing Amiss" The Night Before Couple Found Shot

"GLENOLDEN, PA — Residents of a Delaware County neighborhood are in shock after a longtime resident evidently shot and critically wounded his wife, then killed himself.

"Police Tuesday morning found the body of Richard Piroli, 66, who had fired two shots from a revolver, critically injuring his wife, Carol Ann Piroli, also 66, before shooting himself in the chest. The two were found in the bedroom of their Glenolden house.

"Neighbors said that Carol Ann Piroli's morning routine was to walk to her daughter's home, a few houses away, to baby-sit her two preschool-age grandchildren.

"When the grandmother failed to show up Tuesday, the family called police about 7:30 a.m.

"Carol Ann Piroli was rushed to Crozer Chester Medical Center, where she was in critical condition with head wounds and placed on life support, District Attorney Jack Whelan said.

"Investigators are checking whether a report of gunfire during the night was related to the shootings.

"Whelan said investigators were looking into reports that Richard Piroli had exhibited unusual behavior.

"He would not elaborate. They also are looking into whether the gun was owned legally.

"No one one else was in the house at the time, Whelan said.

"`This is a horrible tragedy for the family, and my heart goes out to them,` Whelan said.

"Officials said that the couple had been seen on their porch the evening before the shootings and that nothing appeared to be amiss."
