Man Faces Jail After Botched Murder/Suicide

"LONG BEACH, CA — A man who allegedly stabbed his girlfriend to death before turning the knife on himself was still hospitalized Monday, police said.

"Long Beach Police Department officers were called to an apartment complex in the 1100 block of Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard at about 12:30 p.m. Saturday and arrived to find 49-year-old Joan Ann Stubbs dead and her boyfriend covered in blood, police and coroner's officials said Monday.

"It was the victim's roommate who called police after coming home to a grisly scene, police said.

"Officers arrived to find the victim on the bedroom floor. She had suffered multiple stab wounds to the upper torso and was declared dead at the scene by Long Beach Fire Department paramedics.

"The suspect, who had locked himself in the bathroom when the victim's roommate came home, came out of the bathroom and was found with several self-inflicted stab wounds to his body. He was rushed by paramedics to a local hospital, where he was listed in critical condition over the weekend.

"The suspect, who lived at the location with his girlfriend, was placed under arrest at the hospital and will be booked into the Long Beach City Jail when pending his release from the hospital, police said.

"The motive for the slaying remained under investigation Monday."
