Son Dies, Mom Survives Botched Murder/Suicide
"STEAMBOAT SPRINGS, CO — The Routt County Sheriff's Office says a 9-year-old boy was shot and killed by his mother early Wednesday morning. The mother, 45-year-old Lisa Lesyshen, then shot herself but survived the attempt on her life.
"The victim has been identified as Asher Lesyshen-Kirlan.
"A report of a suicide came into the Routt County Sheriff's Office around 3 a.m. When deputies arrived at the home near Stagecoach State Park, Asher's father, Michael Kirlan, was outside and told them his son was shot and his wife was upstairs with a gun.
"Deputies found 9-year-old Asher dead inside the home. Lisa Lesyshen was found unconscious and transported to the Yampa Valley Medical Center for treatment for a single gunshot wound.
"A Routt County news release did not specify what led up to the shooting. The Colorado Bureau of Investigation is looking into the incident.
"Asher was active in multiple community youth programs. He enjoyed skiing and mountain bikes.
"Asher was a third-grader at Soda Creek Elementary School. A crisis management team met with students' parents Wednesday."
