Violence Erupts At Family Gathering

"DENVER, CO — A man was in serious condition and on `investigative hold` at Denver Health Medical Center on Monday after Denver police said he fatally shot his wife and turned the gun on himself at a family gathering in the Globeville neighborhood.

"Genaro Rodela, 37, was being held for investigation of homicide, in the killing of his wife, whom the Denver medical examiner's office identified as Maria C. Rodela, 34. She died of two gunshot wounds to the head during the `domestic altercation,` the office said.

"Court records show the couple married in 1996, and Maria Rodela filed for divorce in February.

"The murder/suicide attempt was reported about 9 p.m. Sunday in the 4400 block of Sherman Street. Police said the two had an argument before Genaro Rodela opened fire on the woman in front of several relatives.

"He then shot himself in the chest. A ribbon of yellow crime scene tape cordoned the home Monday morning.

"Neighbors said the family who lives there is quiet. Most heard nothing until they saw a fire truck and police cars arrive at the scene."
