Attempted Murder/Suicide At Florida School Board Meeting

"PANAMA CITY, FL — The Bay District School Board meeting Tuesday afternoon was disrupted by a man who pulled out a gun while the meeting was in progress.

"The man, 56-year-old Clay Duke, eventually shot and killed himself...

"Panama City Police Chief John Van Etten said no one else in the building was hurt.

"According to ... witnesses at the scene, Duke approached the podium and said that he had a motion to make. Duke pulled out a spray can of paint and painted a circle on the wall with a capital letter `V` going through the center.

"Duke then pulled out what School Superintendent Bill Husfelt said was a large handgun.

"Husfelt said at one point, the gun was pointed directly at him.

"`It was a .45 caliber gun, but it was so big it looked like a shotgun when it was pointed at me,` Husfelt said.

"Husfelt said the look on the man’s face `was almost a smile.`

"`He had made up his mind that he was going to die today`, Husfelt said after the meeting. `He said several times, 'I’m gonna die'.`

"Van Etten said the gun was loaded with real bullets.

"... School board member Ginger Littleton struck the gunman with her purse after he had pulled out the gun. The gunman then pushed her to the ground and, after a lenghty, rambling discussion with school board members, fired several shots.

"Those in attendance at the meeting ran outside as police entered the building.

"Duke was reportedly upset that his wife had been fired by the school district, and had a criminal history of similar actions."
