Murder/Suicide Suspected In RV Park Deaths

"RIVERSIDE COUNTY, CA - Two people were shot to death early Monday inside a recreational vehicle in an unincorporated area between Corona and Lake Elsinore, the Riverside County Sheriff's Department said.

"Early findings suggest it may have been a murder-suicide, a sheriff's investigator said.

"Deputies were called about 4:30 a.m. to the Glen Ivy Recreational Vehicle Park in the 24600 block of Glen Ivy Road, where a caller reported hearing shots fired, the Sheriff's Department said in a news release.

"Park security guards informed deputies that two people were found unresponsive inside one of the park's motor homes, both suffering from gunshot wounds. The deputies entered the RV and determined that the two, a man, 57, and a woman, 50, were dead.

"Their identities and relationship to each other were being withheld pending notification of family members.

"`It appears to be a murder-suicide,` said sheriff's Sgt. Scott Brown, of the department's Central Homicide Unit, who was on scene with the investigation, "but we're not going to have a final conclusion until we interview family members."

"Late Monday, Brown would not speculate on a motive for the shootings.

"The RV park's management could not be reached for comment Monday evening. Its Web site describes the park as a full-service RV resort and campground off Interstate 15 near Temescal Canyon Road."

Cops Calling It Homicide

"SUNRIVER, OR - A murder investigation is underway south of Sunriver. It all happened in a quiet three bedroom home on Hermosa Road that has been put up for sale just a few weeks ago. Deschutes County Sheriff's deputies responded to a call at the home around 10:30 Thursday morning. `On their initial arrival they found a white male adult hanging adjacent to the center of the garage area, further investigation, immediate investigation they also located two more victims inside the residence,` said Captain Marc Mills with the Deschutes County Sheriff's Office.

"The case is being called a homicide. The victims are 40 year old Joachim Steffan, his wife, 49 year old Dagmar Steffan and their seven year old son Pascal Steffan. Neighbor Janae Smith's daughter played with Pascal, `they are very good friends, bike riding together, my daughter's played at their house and he's come over and played at our house,` said Smith.

"As detectives process the crime scene, they made clear the public is not in danger. `In a situation like this where it's unknown, you have three deceased victims, you have no living persons to say what happened, no witnesses to say what happened, so we now have a puzzle that we have to put together,` said Captain Mills.

"The family owns La Pine Dry Cleaning Coin and Laundry and Steffan Construction. `I know that they're having hard times economically, all of us are really struggling,` said Smith.

"Sheriff's detectives, Oregon State Police Crime Lab, and the Deschutes County District Attorney's Office will continue it's investigation and look into the family's background."

Fire Conceals Murder/Suicide, But Not For Long

"HOLMDEL, NJ - A man was shot to death by a woman who set fire to a Holmdel home then fatally shot herself in the house, authorities said today.

"Investigators determined two people found inside the Red Hill Road home Wednesday night were not killed by the fire there but were part of a murder-suicide.

"Authorities have not yet released the names of the dead man and woman or information about their relationship, but said the blaze was deliberately set.

"First Assistant Monmouth County Prosecutor Peter Warshaw Jr. would not say whether either of them lived in the single-family home or owned it. He said the woman shot the man to death and after an unspecified period started the fire and then shot herself.

"`All available evidence strongly indicates that this was a murder-suicide,` he said. `The male decedent was the homicide victim. The female decedent appears to have committed the homicide and thereafter both started the fire and shot herself to death.`

"He declined to say when the man was shot and when the fire was started, but said the acts were not contemporaneous.

"Arson investigators found traces of at least one accelerant, Warshaw said. He would not say where the fire started or where the bodies were found.

"Investigators recovered a weapon, but it was not immediately known whether the same weapon was used for both shootings, Warshaw said."

Knife Fight Or Murder/Suicide?

"CHICAGO, IL - A South Side husband and wife found stabbed to death in their apartment Monday afternoon probably killed each other or perhaps was a case of murder-suicide, police said this morning.

"Mario Zavala, 46, and his wife, Krystal, 22, had a `volatile relationship` and had recently gotten back together, said Police Officer Laura Kubiak, a department spokeswoman.

"Police do not believe that a third person was responsible for their deaths but will wait for the results of an autopsy to make a final determination, she said. Police currently are treating the case not as a murder but as a death investigation, she added.

"There were no signs of forced entry into their apartment in the 5700 block of South Albany Avenue in the Gage Park neighborhood, Kubiak said. A knife was found at the scene.

"Each sustained multiple stab wounds, she said, adding, `We think it's a case of mutual combatants.`

"Mario Zavala was sentenced in 1987 to 33 years for murder but has a clean record since then. Kubiak said he served 20 years of that sentence. His wife had a minor arrest record for retail theft."
