"At about 7:50 p.m., Fire Chief Michael Vatter said, Lashaun ran into a nearby firehouse, soaking wet and so despondent he could hardly speak, and told what had happened. He had been taken there by a passerby who saw him after he came out of the river.

"Responders found the minivan submerged in about 10 feet of water, four dead inside.

"Police said they believe the children — boys Landon and Lance Pierre, ages 5 and 2, and girl Lainaina Pierre, 11 months — were alive when the minivan went into the water.

"`There is no logic,` Mayor Nicholas Valentine said this morning. `No one should do anything like this. Find another way out of it, especially with the children. Find help.`"

Cops Won't Speculate On Murder/Suicide

"CUPERTINO, CA — A 50-year-old Cupertino man whose body was found with his wife inside their ranch-style home on Saturday died from `an apparent gunshot wound` to the head, the Santa Clara County Sheriff's Office said today.

"The Santa Clara County Medical Examiner's Office confirmed the identities of the couple as Susan and Gary Longdon. The sheriff's office has not offered a final ruling on the couple's deaths, but did say it would be classified as either a murder/suicide or joint suicide.

"Although the medical examiner's office determined that 51-year-old Susan Longdon suffered blunt force trauma to her head, further testing must be done before a cause of death can be determined, said Sgt. Jose Cardoza of the sheriff's office.

"Court documents show that Susan Longdon had filed for divorce from her husband three months ago. The couple was married on Dec. 31, 1981 and had been separated since September, according to court documents.

"On Saturday at about 2:30 p.m., sheriff's deputies discovered the bodies after responding to a report of a `suspicious circumstance` at a home on 10398 Westacres Drive."

"Wonderful People" Found Dead In Home

"CONCORD, CA — Police are investigating a possible murder-suicide involving two longtime partners discovered Monday night, marking the city's second homicide in as many days.

"The bodies of Frederik Meurer, 32, of Concord, and 32-year-old Miranda Pretoli were found by officers at about 8:30 p.m. after they got a distress call from a home on 2321 Bedford Road, police said.

"They found Meurer and Pretoli laying on the floor of the residence, dead from apparent gunshot wounds. Police did not release a motive or the circumstances leading up to the shootings, citing an ongoing investigation.

"Next-door neighbor Gene Traversaro said he was home when the bodies were found, but he did not hear any noise or commotion suggesting violence. No one else is believed to have been involved in the deaths, which shocked a neighborhood that warmly remembered the pair.

"Meurer and Pretoli lived together in a rear building on the property while Meurer's mother lived in the main home, neighbors said. In court records, Meurer described Pretoli as his "life-long partner."

"Traversaro, a 30-year resident of the serene street, said he has lived next door to the Meurer family for a quarter of a century and described the deceased as well liked in the neighborhood.

"`They're wonderful people,` Traversaro said. `I get this empty feeling knowing they're gone.`"

"Intensely Supervised" Ex-Con Kills Woman, Self

"WHEAT RIDGE, CO — A man who fatally shot a woman before killing himself was identified today as a prison parolee who had served time for attempted murder.

"David Atencio, 52, fatally shot Anna Villalobos, 45, on Thursday in a Wheat Ridge house before shooting himself inside the crawl space of the same home, according to the Wheat Ridge Police Department.

"`Atencio had been released from prison in April of 2008 after being sentenced in 1990 for attempted murder out of Jefferson County,` police said in a media release.

"Atencio, who worked for a Denver area scaffolding company, was on `intensely supervised house arrest` at the time of the murder-suicide, police said.

"On Thursday, the victim's son Joshua Butierres, 23, had gone to the home, in the 4400 block of Harlan Court, to check on his mother, police said. When the Butierres arrived at the house, Atencio fired a gun at him.

"Police surrounded the home and when SWAT members entered, about 7 hours and 30 minutes later, they found Atencio's body in the crawl space.

"Atencio shot and killed Villalobos prior to her son going to check on her," police said. "Atencio then killed himself during the stand-off."

"Villalobos, who worked as a receptionist at an insurance company for several years, was found dead in the garage.

"Police evacuated a bank and several homes, and a nearby school was placed on lockdown, as the incident unfolded. No one else, including Butierres, was hit by gunfire.

"Police withheld the gunman's name until his family had been notified of his death.

"Villalobos and Atencio had lived together for about a year, said Lt. Dave Pickett, and officers had not been called to the address on any prior complaints."
