Argument Leaves One Dead, One Injured

"MILAN, NY — A 47-year-old Red Hook man shot his ex-wife, who survived, then killed himself Monday on a property where the two worked as caretakers, according to the Dutchess County Sheriff’s Office.

"John A. Hogan died of a single self-inflicted gunshot wound to the head at about 11 a.m. His ex-wife, Lisa A. Coon, 45, of Red Hook, suffered gunshot wounds to the back of her head, according to the Sheriff’s Office.

"Hogan was transported by helicopter to Albany Medical Center where he was pronounced dead. Coon was taken by ambulance to St. Francis Hospital in Poughkeepsie where she was being treated.

"The shooting took place at 915 Turkey Hill Road, a property where the two worked as caretakers along with their daughter and her fiance, deputies said.

"Deputies said it appears that Hogan and Coon became involved in a dispute while they were working at the property. At some point, Hogan pulled out a gun and a struggle broke out with his daughter.

"During the fight, Hogan fell down a set of stairs. Coon and her daughter locked themselves in the bathroom and attempted to call the daughter’s fiancé, who was doing yard work outside, deputies said.

"It appears that Hogan kicked in the door to the bathroom and shot Coon in the back of the head then fatally shot himself in the side of the head, deputies said.

"Deputies said authorities were trying to determine further details such as the specifics of the dispute.

"The weapon that was used was a .22-caliber pistol, and the investigation has revealed that it had been legally possessed by Hogan, deputies said."

Police Chase Ends In Killer's Suicide

"COLUMBIA, SC — A Columbia cab driver was shot to death Friday afternoon in a Waffle House parking lot, and the suspected shooter later killed himself after leading police on a 30-minute, high-speed chase through three counties in the stolen cab.

"Authorities Saturday morning identified the gunman as 20-year-old Nicholas Kyle Rivers of Camden. The cab driver's name was not released. However, Kershaw County Sheriff Jim Matthews said the man killed at the Waffle House on Two Notch Road near I-20 was a driver for Checker Yellow Cab company in Columbia.

"Richland County deputies were called to the Waffle House shortly after 4 p.m. after someone called to report gunshots, said Richland County Deputy Arielle Reposta, a department spokeswoman.

"The Checker Yellow Cab driver was found in the parking lot with multiple gunshot wounds and taken to Palmetto Health Richland, where he later died from his injuries.
Richland County sheriff’s deputies responding to the shooting saw the stolen Checker Yellow cab and followed it onto I-20, Reposta said.

"Once the shooter crossed into Kershaw County, Matthews said, his deputies took over the chase. The shooter left I-20 at Exit 108 onto S.C. 34 and then drove into Lee County, where that county’s sheriff’s deputies joined the chase.

"`The guy was flying,` Matthews said.

"The shooter eventually drove back into Kershaw County and headed toward Camden, Matthews said.

"As the chase neared the Camden city limits, the Kershaw County deputy requested permission to perform a driving maneuver where he would bump the cab driven by the shooter and force it to spin out, Matthews said.

"As the deputy approached the stolen cab the two cars hit a patch of road where Camden Police Department officers had laid out spikes to stop the shooter’s vehicle . The cab tires blew out, and the car spun into a guardrail. It hit a second guardrail before coming to rest in the middle of the road, Matthews said. The spikes also punctured the tires of the deputy’s patrol car.

"`My deputy and the Lee County deputy came up to the cab and the guy had shot himself in the head,` Matthews said. `He was slumped over the steering wheel and bleeding all over the place.`

"The shooter was airlifted to Palmetto Health Richland but died from the gunshot, Matthews said."

Missing Couple Found Dead At Home

"SLIDELL, LA — A man killed the Slidell city prosecutor's secretary and then himself inside the eastern St. Tammany Parish home they shared, authorities discovered Wednesday. Carol Nilsson, 63, died from a bullet wound to the head, and the man she lived with on the 200 block of South Military Road near Slidell fatally shot himself in the mouth, according to Melanie Comeaux, the parish coroner's office executive director.

"Comeaux could not immediately release that man's name Thursday because the coroner's staff was still working to conclusively identify him, but he had lived with Nilsson for many years, said Sheriff's Office spokesman Capt. George Bonnett.

"Deputies were led to the couple's corpses after Nilsson failed to show up to a memorial service for her brother.

"Relatives and friends on Wednesday afternoon went to a local church to honor Ronald G. `Ron` Apro, an Army veteran of the Korean War who died Sept. 2. Nilsson, however, did not attend the service, so a family member asked the Sheriff's Office to check on the couple, who had not been seen or heard from since Tuesday morning.

"Responding deputies found Nilsson and the man lying near a handgun about 9 p.m., Bonnett said. The Sheriff's Office did not discuss what may have provoked the violence."

July Murder, September Suicide

"MACON, GA — Jones County sheriff’s investigators are treating the shooting death of a homicide suspect as a suicide, officials said Wednesday.

"Sheriff’s investigator Kenny Gleaton said Debra Warren Brown, 47, was found by a family member at her home Tuesday afternoon with an apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound. Gleaton said his office is waiting for an official determination by the medical examiner.

"Gleaton declined to say who found the body or if there was a suicide note at the scene, citing the ongoing investigation.

"Brown was arrested July 9 and charged with felony murder in the shooting death of her husband, Mitchell Reid Brown, 52, at their residence at 592 Creekside Drive in Jones County. During that incident, deputies responded to a 911 call at 3:30 a.m. and found Mitchell Brown suffering from a gunshot wound to the torso during an apparent domestic altercation. He died at the scene.

"Debra Brown was released on bond about two weeks after her arrest, Gleaton said. She was indicted in August. Gleaton said a court date had not been set for her trial.
Gleaton said the gun used in the apparent suicide was different than the one used in the death of her husband. That gun was being held as evidence.

"With Debra Brown’s death, Gleaton said that will close the book on the investigation into Mitchell Reid Brown’s death.

"`There are a few things we’ll follow up with,` Gleaton said. `But there won’t be a prosecution on it, obviously.`"

"As night fell on the site of the murder-suicide, family members held each other, shaking with emotion. `Why did this happen?,` one young relative asked.

"`We don't know the answer for that yet. We don't know why,` said Sgt. Felipe Rivera with the Harris County Sheriff Office's homicide department.

"No one witnessed the attack, and authorities were receiving conflicting reports late Sunday, but relatives confirmed that Hunter Archer, 10, was killed inside the house on 6222 Darby Way around 5:40 p.m. His brother, Jhaden Archer, 8, was transported to Memorial Hermann Hospital. Television station KHOU reported that he died overnight at the hospital.

Fire Deaths Ruled Murder/Suicide

"ROBBINS, NC — Authorities have ruled two bodies found inside a burning home last week a murder-suicide. Firefighters called to the scene Aug. 29 found the bodies of Santana Vernal Sanchez, 28, and Apolonio Barrita Bustamonte in a front room of the house at 581 E. Lake St. in Robbins.

"`They were both burned beyond recognition,` said Police Chief Jeff Sheffield. `We had to wait for identification based on dental records.`

"Now that autopsies have been completed and determined Sanchez was murdered and Bustamonte killed himself—and families of all involved have been notified—Sheffield was able to release their names and conclude his investigation with the murder-suicide determination.

"Police originally said a Hispanic male in his late 20s ran out into the street at about 3 p.m. that Monday and flagged down a vehicle. The driver, who works at nearby American Growler, took him to the police department after he said he’d been shot.

"That man, Juan Carlos Sanchez, 29, had three .32 caliber bullet wounds in his back, Sheffield said this week. The deceased woman found in the home was his cousin. He was treated at the station by EMS and later at a local hospital. Sanchez is back home with family members now, the chief said.

"Investigation, with help from the SBI and the office of Sheriff Lane Carter, determined that Bustamonte murdered Santana Sanchez—his former girlfriend and mother of his 2 year old—then shot Juan Sanchez before setting the house on fire and killing himself, Sheffield said.

"`We are ruling this a murder-suicide,` Sheffield said."

"On Tuesday, they went to the Bullet Hole in Overland Park and now both are dead.

"Police were called to the shooting range at 6201 Robinson Road about 11:20 a.m. and found a man and a woman shot. Police do not think anyone else was involved in the deaths.

"`It was just a spur of the moment thing, them going,` Christy Gregor, Hilburn’s sister, said late Tuesday. `A detective came out and told us she was dead. We don’t know what happened.`

"She said she had met the boyfriend, but did not know much about him.

"`He seemed normal,` Gregor said.

"Matthew Bregel of the Overland Park Police Department said gunfire in the building was obviously common so the shooting did not draw attention. The layout is such that Hilburn and the man could have been the only two in a section, he added."

"The man had not been identified Tuesday.

"Gregor said her sister worked at a grocery store in the Northland.

"`The detective told us he would know something else` today, Gregor said.

Police Suspect Deadly Infatuation Led To Murder/Suicide

"SPOKANE, WA — A 20-year-old Spokane woman is dead and police say her suspected murderer shot himself in an apparent murder-suicide at a North Spokane apartment complex.

"The Spokane County Sheriff's Office was called to the 200 block of Westview Avenue and Colfax Street around 9 p.m. Saturday night. When they arrived they found the woman dead in the living room of her apartment. Detectives say she was shot multiple times. The victim has not been identified.

"Witnesses helped Sheriff's Deputies quickly located a suspect, a 26-year-old man, who barricaded himself inside his apartment. Multiple law enforcement agencies responded and negotiators tried for hours to get him to come out. When police finally obtained a search warrant around 4:15 a.m. and SWAT entered his apartment it appeared he had shot himself. They also found multiple weapons inside.

"During the hours leading up to entering the 26-year-old man's apartment, detectives say negotiators were never able to make contact with the suspect.

"Police speculate the suspect may have been infatuated with the 20-year-old, who lived to the east of him in a fourplex apartment. That is still under investigation.

"Detectives are expected to still be out at the apartment Sunday afternoon."
