Wife Killer Plows Car Into Parked Semi

"MILL CREEK, WA — Police say a pregnant woman found dead in an apartment early Monday was likely killed by her husband shortly before he was involved in a fatal car crash.

"Mill Creek police spokesman Ian Durkee said the investigation began just after midnight when officers were dispatched to a domestic dispute at an apartment complex in the 14700 block of Main Street.

"Officers found the 27-year-old woman dead inside, but there was no one else in the apartment.

"At the same time police were checking the apartment, officers responded to a fatal car crash about 4 miles away in the 18500 block of 35th Avenue SE.

"Durkee said the woman's husband was speeding when he crossed the centerline and slammed into a semi-truck trailer that was parked along the side of the road. He died at the scene, and no one else was hurt.

"Police have not released the names of the couple.

"Friends of the couple told investigators they had gone to the apartment Sunday night after the woman called and said her husband started acting strangely and was armed with a loaded shotgun.

"The friends believed they had defused the situation and left. That's when the husband attacked his wife, Durkee said.

"The man owned several firearms, according to police, but officials have not said exactly how the woman was killed other than stating that she suffered a `severe head wound.`

"Investigators spent much of the day collecting evidence at the apartment and the crash scene, but it was not clear what prompted the killing."

Nanny Survives Botched Suicide After Killing Two Kids

"NEW YORK, NY — The nanny suspected of slaying a Manhattan professional couple's two young children began stabbing herself as the mother entered the bathroom and began screaming when she saw the dead bodies in the bathtub, New York's police commissioner said on Friday.

"The nanny, YoSelyn Ortega, had been employed by the family of Kevin and Marina Krim for two years before police said she killed their children and attempted suicide on Thursday in the family's luxury apartment on 57 W 75th Street, Police Commissioner Ray Kelly said.

"Ortega, who lived with her son and sister near the Krims' apartment off Central Park, has been a naturalized U.S. citizen for a decade, Kelly said, adding that she had been referred to the Krims by another family.

"New York police were hoping to interview the critically wounded nanny later on Friday, said an NYPD official who requested anonymity. Ortega, 50, has not been charged because police have not been able to interview her.

"`We know now that the nanny began to stab herself as the woman entered the bathroom,` Kelly said. `We initially thought it was, it had already been done, but now information is coming out that she did it as the mother entered the room.`

"Ortega remains the prime suspect in the stabbing death of the two children, Leo, 2, and Lulu, 6, Kelly said.

"Marina Krim had entered the apartment at about 5:30 p.m. Thursday with her 3-year-old daughter, returning home after Ortega failed to meet her as planned at a local dance studio with the two other children.

"Krim saw that the apartment was dark and returned to the lobby to ask the doorman if the nanny and kids had gone out, Kelly said. The doorman said no, and she returned to the apartment and went into the bathroom, he said.

"A neighbor heard the mother's screams and called 911, police said.

"New York Police Department spokesman Paul Browne said the children suffered `multiple stab wounds,` and were pronounced dead after being rushed to a nearby hospital."

Botched Murder Plot Followed By Ex-Con's Suicide

"JONESVILLE, VA — Lee County Sheriff Gary Parsons has identified the man who is accused of shooting a man before shooting and killing himself Tuesday afternoon.

"The man, Hurley Eugene Underwood, 56, of Doris Lane in Pennington Gap, shot at a man in the woods around 2:30 p.m. before shooting himself in a high school parking lot, Parsons said in a written statement.

"The man who was shot was Caleb Lawson, 19, of Pennington Gap, the statement said.

"`Underwood lured Lawson and his girlfriend ... to a wooded area under the guise of helping him dig a hole in the ground which he told them was a deer trap,` the statement said. `As it turned out, it was an apparent grave for Lawson.`

"The girlfriend told investigators Underwood told Lawson to dig one corner out deeper, and as Lawson was in the hole, shot at him twice. One shot went through Lawson's left arm and the other lodged in his right shoulder, the statement said.

"Lawson escaped the hole and ran away, as did his girlfriend. Both called 911 for help, the statement said. Lawson was treated at Lee Regional Medical Center and released Tuesday evening.

"Underwood left the wooded area in a silver pickup truck and drove to the upper parking lot at Lee High School, the statement said. Sheriff's Office Capt. Taylor Scott saw the truck and followed it into the lot. Scott blocked the truck from going nearer to the building with his vehicle, the statement said.

"`He then left his vehicle, drew his weapon, and demanded that Underwood show his hands,` the statement said. `Underwood then lifted a .32 caliber handgun to his own head and fired, dying instantly at the scene.`

"Parsons said because Scott was there when Underwood shot himself, the Virginia State Police have been asked to handle the case.

"Underwood was convicted in 1984 of attempted rape with a deadly weapon in Indiana, according to Virginia State Police records. He was released from prison in 2005, Parsons said in the statement.

"TRENTON, NJ — A 54-year-old woman stabbed to death in her North Trenton home early yesterday may be the victim of a murder-suicide, as the man believed to be her killer jumped from the Delaware Memorial Bridge hours after the slaying, according to two police sources with knowledge of the investigation.

"Florence Grayson, 54, was found stabbed to death on the floor of an upstairs bedroom in her home on 1326 North Olden Avenue about 12:15 a.m. yesterday, Sgt. Mark Kieffer said yesterday. Grayson, who had been stabbed in the chest, is not believed to be the victim of a random crime.
