Police Find Dead Couple In Abandoned Bus

"CHUGIAK, AK — A few minutes after a woman frantically called police for help early Thursday morning from a ramshackle dwelling in a junk-strewn Chugiak lot, arriving officers found her dead along with her boyfriend. An initial investigation determined she was the victim in a murder/suicide.

"The residence where police found Nita Kilapsuk, 40, and Michael Hagood, 49, dead of gunshot wounds was a retired People Mover bus displaying `Bus out of Service` on its route indicator.

"Police said Kilapsuk was from the North Slope village of Nuiqsut. Hagood owned the 0.9-acre Chugiak lot at 21715 Valley Ave. where the bus was parked.

"Just after 4 a.m., Kilapsuk called 911 and told a dispatcher that Hagood, her boyfriend, was holding her against her will and had a gun, police said. Anchorage Police Sgt. Mike Couturier said that as police were rushing to the scene, the dispatcher tried to calm Hagood.

"Anchorage police spokeswoman Jennifer Castro said that throughout the call, it sounded like the phone was being passed between the couple. She said the dispatcher tried to convince Hagood to put the gun on the floor and leave the bus.

"Then the phone went dead.

"Couturier said police don't know if someone hung up or the cellphone connection was lost. But a minute later, the officers who reached the scene heard two gunshots.

"Couturier said Hagood shot Kilapsuk and then shot himself.

"He said police aren't sure how it happened. There was no magazine in the gun but Hagood could have placed a single round in the chamber for himself.

"Police haven't said what kind of gun was used, Couturier said. He said police have reason to believe alcohol may be involved.

"Couturier said because the lot is so dense with overgrown vegetation, rusted muscle cars and a couple pieces of heavy equipment and an old fire truck, it has taken a while to for police to canvass the area.

"According to the Anchorage assessor's office, the lot is assessed at $61,200. A barn and a cabin on the lot, each 48 years old, were described by assessors as having `no value`."

Suicidal Teen Driver Kills Random Motorist, Passenger

"EDISON, NJ — The Edison teenager who crashed his parents' car into another vehicle on Route 27 on Tuesday night, killing him and two other people, was attempting to kill himself and had written a suicide note, law enforcement sources [said].

"The teenager, a 15-year-old student at John P. Stevens High School in Edison, had written a suicide note on his body, according to the sources, who asked not to be identified because they were not authorized to discuss the case.

"A law enforcement source and several classmates who requested anonymity identified the driver as Srijan Saha of Edison. Saha was interested in cars, rap music and art, according to classmates and his personal Facebook page, which says the teen was raised in Detroit, Mich.

"Edison Police Chief Thomas Bryan declined to comment. In a statement released late Wednesday night, Acting Middlesex County Prosecutor Andrew Carey said the crash was being investigated as a `suicide-homicide,` but did not identify the teenage driver.

"Mohammed Zia, 46, and his brother-in-law Ali Behzad, 36, both of Edison, had gone out for a late night cup of coffee and were driving north on Route 27 near the Stony Road intersection when the teen's car struck theirs head-on around 12:30 a.m., authorities said. In his statement, Carey said the teen's vehicle veered into oncoming traffic shortly before the crash.

"The teenager and Behzad were pronounced dead at the scene, according to Carey. Zia died at Robert Wood Johnson University Hospital a short time later.

"On Tuesday, Bryan said it was unclear why the teen was driving, but confirmed the 15-year-old had borrowed the vehicle without his parent's permission."

Unhurt Baby Found With Dead Couple

"GRANTVILLE, PA — A man and a woman killed in an East Hanover Township, Dauphin County motel each died of a single gunshot wound to the head in an apparent murder/suicide, a state police spokesman said Wednesday.

"The victims are 22-year-old Savana Mercedes Silva and 21-year-old Luis Angel Gerena-Morales, state police spokesman Rob Hicks said.

"`That is officially what we are labeling it,` Hicks said of the murder/suicide. `That's how we are investigating it. It's still early in the investigation; other things are being looked at. With the evidence that we do have, we feel it's appropriate to label it as such.`

"Hicks said evidence suggests Silva shot Gerena-Morales before turning the gun on herself.

"Police were alerted to the incident by an occupant of another rental unit at 7:42 a.m. at the 10200 Allentown Blvd location.

"A five-month-old baby girl was found in the rental unit unharmed, Hicks said. She was taken into custody and was placed with Children and Youth Services. Silva was the mother of the girl, but Hicks said they have not confirmed if Gerena-Morales was the father.

"Police found the bodies lying close together in the living room/kitchen area of the small apartment with the large caliber handgun nearby. It is unclear if there were any signs of a struggle."

Three Dead After Argument Escalates

"EL MONTE, CA — An El Monte man apparently killed his daughter and her girlfriend before turning the gun on himself in a double murder/suicide, the Los Angeles County Sheriff's Department said Wednesday.

"Los Angeles County coroner's officials identified the three dead as Harry Maldonado Jr., 65, Evie Maldonado, 32, and Diana Amaya, 38. They were found shot to death inside the garage of an apartment complex, where they lived together with other relatives, said Lt. Eddie Hernandez of the sheriff's homicide bureau.

Blood On The Floor, Blood On The Wall

"MARYVILLE, TN — Authorities are investigating a murder-suicide after two people were found dead Monday evening inside a Maryville apartment.

"Maryville Police officers were dispatched to 102 N. Everett High Road shortly after 7:30 p.m. Monday to a report of a possible deceased person.

"Lori D. Laugherty, 35, and David Michael Kirk, 47, who both lived on the apartment, were found dead upon officers’ arrival, authorities said. Maryville Police Chief Tony Crisp said both died from a gunshot wound and it is believed Kirk shot Laugherty before turning the gun on himself.

"Crisp said Laugherty’s son had called a friend to inform her he could not reach his mother. The friend, who had a key, was asked to check on the couple.

"The family friend told police she entered the apartment and saw blood on the floor and wall. She then walked into the living room and found both victims on the floor, according to the police report. She then left the apartment and phoned police.

"Based on the investigation, Crisp said, it appears a struggle started in another area of the residence and ended in the living room where the two were found lying on the floor. Authorities believe the incident occurred between 1 p.m. and 7:30 p.m. Monday.

"`Based on our investigation, it appears Mr. Kirk murdered Ms. Laugherty and inflicted a fatal gunshot wound to himself,` Crisp said, adding that the investigation is ongoing."

Cops Disarm Wrong Man Responding To Attempted Murder/Suicide

"NORTH LAS VEGAS, NV — North Las Vegas police are investigating a shooting that left one person dead and another injured after an apparent domestic dispute Saturday near Ann Road and Allen Lane.

"At approximately noon Saturday, police responded to reports of shots fired in a home in the 3500 block of Cantura Crest Court.

"According to police, a dispute between an estranged couple sent a young wife to UMC with gunshot injuries and ended with the husband dead by his own hands.

"When officers arrived, they were confronted by a 67-year-old man armed with a handgun. As soon as the officers commanded the man to drop the weapon, police said he killed himself with a gunshot to the head.

Police Won't Say Who Shot Who

"OXFORD, AL — Authorities this morning provided the names of a husband and wife found dead in their Oxford home Tuesday, and said they were killed by gunshots.

"The dead couple are James Rosa, 50, and Curry Rosa, 49, according to Talladega County Coroner Shaddix Murphy. Oxford police Chief Bill Partridge said both were killed by shots fired from the same pistol. Police have described the deaths as a murder/suicide, but Partidge declined this morning to say who fired the shots.

Scene Staged To Look Like Double Suicide

"CLARKSVILLE, FL — The Calhoun County Sheriffs Office is currently investigating what they believe to be a murder/suicide. On Monday October 7, 2013 two Hispanic migrant workers were located deceased at a watermelon farm off of Whitewater Grade in Clarksville.

"The deceased are 32-year-old Crecencio Rangel Manilla of Quincy, Florida and 15-year-old Mirna Domingo-Perez of Marianna, Florida. Both subjects were illegal immigrants who worked in local produce farms. Manilla was from Mexico and Domingo-Perez was from Guatemala.

"During the course of the investigation investigators spoke with friends and family of both Manilla and Domingo-Perez. They learned that Manilla showed interest in Domingo-Perez however, due to the age difference Domingo-Perez did not reciprocate those feelings.

"The two had worked together on local farms and knew each other. Sometime during the daytime hours of October 5, 2013 Manilla picked up Domingo-Perez from her Watson Street home in Marianna, Florida. According to witnesses Manilla told Domingo-Perez that his boss was having a party and he needed help setting up tables and chairs. Manilla took Domingo-Perez to a watermelon field off of Northwest Whitewater Grade in Calhoun County.

"Sometime late Saturday or early Sunday morning Domingo-Perez was hung against her will. She was found with her left hand between the rope and her neck and there were ligature marks on her wrist which indicated that her hands had been bound for quite some time. There was bruising on the inside of her mouth which was evidence that she had been struck. Investigators believe that she may have also been gagged.

"It was evident that Domingo-Perez was not a willing participant. Manilla used a forklift and ropes to hang Domingo-Perez from the rafters of the pole barn, and subsequently hanged himself by the same method next to her. Domingo-Perez was found with the ligatures removed from her hands and the rag removed from her mouth. We believe this was done by Manilla prior to hanging himself, with the intent to make the scene look like a double suicide.

"There was no evidence to suggest that anyone else had been to the farm during the time of the incident.

"Autopsies were conducted on both subjects. The autopsy revealed that Domingo-Perez was approximately five weeks pregnant. Investigators believe that this may have been a factor in the motive of the homicide."

Woman Finds Bodies Of Father, Aunt

"UPPER DARBY, PA — Authorities are investigating the suspicious deaths of ailing siblings, a brother and sister whose bodies were found in her first-floor apartment of a duplex they shared, police Superintendent Michael Chitwood said Thursday.

"Both individuals appeared to have been shot, Chitwood said early in the investigation, noting that no scenario had been ruled out.

"Official cause and manner of the deaths is pending autopsies by the Delaware County Medical Examiner’s Office.

"Investigators responded to the 3300 block of Mary Street at about 4:30 p.m.

"The man’s daughter, concerned because she had not been able to make contact with her father since 6 p.m. Wednesday, arrived to check on him Thursday afternoon, according to Chitwood. When she couldn’t locate him in his second-floor apartment, she went looking for him at her aunt’s apartment on the first floor — only to make the grim discovery.

"`Her aunt’s lying on the bed, partially on and partially off … there’s a gun in her lap and she’s bleeding from the left neck area,` Chitwood said, adding the stunned niece ran out of the apartment and called police.

"Officers responded to the scene to find the body of woman in her late 40s to early 50s partially on the bed, and the body of a man in his 60s on the floor, next to the bed, Chitwood said.

"`On her lap was a revolver,` Chitwood said."
