Murder/Suicide Suspected In YMCA Fire

"WHITE PLAINS, NY — Two people were found dead in a possible murder/suicide in a White Plains YMCA after fire tore through the facility, officials said.

"The blaze is believed to have been set intentionally by a long time resident just after 4 a.m. and is currently being investigated as a homicide, according to a police department spokesman.

"The body of the man who is believed to have started the fire, identified by fellow residents only as Eddie, was found in his third-floor room at the Y. The body of another man was found on the first floor.

"`I was trying to go to sleep but I heard a noise and smoke started coming in my window,` said a man who claimed to have lived next door to the supposed firebug. `I ran into the hallway and it was so hot. I couldn't see anything because of the smoke. The explosion made a wall cave in in someone’s room. He was screaming 'fire, fire.'`

"Those who lived at the Y on Mamaroneck Avenue said the incident may have been the result of an ongoing fight between the two men.

"`Eddie was not very friendly and didn’t react well to people,` said Joel Halpera, 73."

Police Find Bodies Behind Locked Doors

"JONESBOROUGH, TN — Washington County Sheriff Ed Graybeal said Friday that marital problems are believed to be the cause of an alleged murder-suicide in Jonesborough.

"Washington County Sheriff’s Office deputies were called to 113 Smith Lane, a home in the Leesburg area in the town’s west end, for a welfare check called in by a neighbor.

"According to Graybeal, when deputies arrived they noticed a strong odor and insects, giving them reason to enter the residence, where they located two bodies—a man and a woman—near the back door.

"Police noticed all doors were secure and believed the double shooting to have taken place Wednesday.

"The sheriff’s department found bullet holes exiting the residence, with one bullet hitting the neighboring house at 115 Smith Lane, which is owned by WCSO Deputy Dewayne Sparks.

"Sparks, who knew the deceased, said he had recently mowed their yard, saying, `they were super-good neighbors.`

"He said he had never heard any arguments between the couple and said he had been working at the courthouse when he heard the call.

"`If I had been there, I might have heard it,` Sparks said, pointing out that the bullet that struck his house was near his bedroom.

"Graybeal called it `a very sad situation,` and said they weren’t looking into prosecuting anyone at the time.

"He said it is believed the man killed the woman, then committed suicide.

"Graybeal said .40-caliber bullets were also taken from the scene.

"The bodies were transported to the James H. Quillen College of Medicine for an autopsy.

"The deceased’s names were being withheld until next of kin had been notified. The investigation is ongoing."

Pair Found Dead In Kitchen

"FAIRLEE, VT — Two people were killed Tuesday in what police say was a murder/suicide that arose from domestic violence in Fairlee.

"The Vermont State Police found Rhonda Gray, 43, and Troy Gray, 45, dead in a home at 14 Sunrise Drive at about 7:45 a.m. Police did not specify in a statement releasing the names whether the Grays were married, divorced or separated.

"The deaths occurred one day after state troopers from Bradford responded to the home to investigate a report that Troy Gray was inside in violation of his conditions of release from a July 25 domestic assault charge in which Rhonda Gray was the victim, Detective Sgt. Fred Cornell said in a statement Tuesday evening.

"When police arrived that day, Rhonda Gray denied that Troy Gray violated his conditions, and there was no other evidence indicating he had been at the home, Cornell said.

"In Tuesday’s case, a preliminary review of the evidence showed that Troy Gray used a rifle to shoot and kill Rhonda Gray, Cornell said. Troy then turned the weapon on himself and died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound.

"Police say a family member living in the home heard two gunshots in an upstairs portion of the residence, and then found the bodies of Rhonda Gray and Troy Gray in the kitchen."

"They Never Bothered Anyone"

"MOUNT VERNON, OH — Authorities in Knox County said evidence shows that a man shot his girlfriend and then turned the gun on himself inside a home west of Mount Vernon Monday.

"According to the Knox County Sheriff's Office, deputies responded to a home on 6833 New Delaware Road at about 2:40 p.m. after receiving a 911 call from the residence.

"According to Sheriff David Shaffer, a man called 911, saying he was checking up on one of his employees who did not show up to work on Friday. When he attempted to make contact with his employee inside the home, he discovered the bodies of 41-year-old Charles Duffy and 49-year-old Christy Robinson.

"`They were just real quiet, very nice and never bothered anyone,` said Jerry Frazee, a neighbor.

"Frazee has lived next door to Duffy for the last 15 years and said he knew the pair well.

"`I just couldn't believe it. What got him down so bad to do that after going three to four tours in Iraq. To do this, it just doesn't add up,` Frazee said.

"Shaffer said a handgun was found near Duffy's body.

"`He had what appears to be an antique military firearm collection, so we took those firearms for safekeeping and security since they were inside the residence,` said Shaffer.

"The sheriff said that deputies had never been called to the home in the past, but Duffy had a brush with the law in the past.

"`It appears Mr. Duffy was arrested in 2001 on a domestic charge, but was found not guilty,` Shaffer said.

"An autopsy is being performed."

Pending Grand Jury Investigation Leads To Abduction, Shooting

"LAS CRUCES, NM — Las Cruces Police believe a grand jury proceeding scheduled for Thursday may have led to Wednesday night’s double-shooting that left two people dead. Preliminary information from the investigation leads detectives to believe the incident is likely a murder/suicide.

"Detectives learned that sometime around 7 p.m. Wednesday, July 31, Richard J. McIntyre, 70, of the 1800 block of Ash Avenue, was seen by a witness walking on the 2200 block of Solarway, near the residence of Lisa Cash, his 59-year-old sister-in-law. Witnesses told detectives that Cash got into her silver Toyota Tacoma, left the residence and apparently stopped to talk with McIntyre.

"Detectives believe that’s when McIntyre abducted Cash at gunpoint and forced her to drive. The two ended up on the 2200 block of Bellamah Drive where they apparently argued before McIntyre used a .38 caliber revolver to shoot Cash at least once in the head while she sat behind the wheel of the Tacoma. It appears that McIntyre then got out of the pickup and fired one shot into his head.

"Area residents heard the gunshots and called 911. Cash and McIntyre were transported to a local hospital where they both were pronounced dead Wednesday evening.

"McIntyre had been under investigation for the alleged abuse and sexual assault of a relative of Cash’s. The case against McIntyre was supposed to be heard by a grand jury today. Detectives believe McIntyre was upset at Cash for her involvement and possible testimony against him before a grand jury."
