SWAT Standoff Ends After Two Gunshots Heard

"MARGATE, FL — An hours-long standoff involving dozens of police officers and a man holed up in a Margate apartment ended after two gunshots sounded from inside the home.

"When police burst inside, they found the man and an elderly woman shot dead. Neither was identified by authorities.

"Margate police said the man, who was about 60, called 911 at about 6:35 p.m., telling the emergency dispatcher there would be a murder/suicide before hanging up, said Margate police spokesman Efrain Suarez.

"But he’d phoned from a land line, and police tracked him to an apartment complex at 1700 NW 80th Avenue.

"Officers tried to contact the man, said Suarez, but couldn’t.

"He briefly stepped out of the home, but then went back in and didn’t reply when police tried calling him on a public address system.

"They called out a special response team and a crisis negotiation team."
