No One Else Was Home

"SALEM, VA — Police say the couple found shot in a Salem home Thursday died when a man shot his wife and then took his own life.

"A department news release Friday said investigators determined that Bonnie Hager, 51, was fatally shot by her husband, Timmy Hager, 55, who then shot himself.

"Police were called to the Hager home in the 100 block of Ferrum Drive about 4:38 p.m. Thursday. They found Timmy Hager dead. Bonnie Hager, still alive, was taken to Carilion Roanoke Memorial Hospital, where she later died.

"Sgt. Stacey Sheppard of the Salem police said no one else was home at the time. She said investigators are still trying to piece together what led up to the shooting.

"She said she could not comment on the gun used, and she said investigators are still speaking with friends and family to determine what may have spurred the violence.

"Other than the police and investigators that moved in and out of the house Thursday night, the Hagers' home looked like every other house on the block. A TV was still on in the second floor, and two cars were parked in the garage.

"Timmy Hager was an accountant with the Roanoke firm Spencer, Hager & Mosdell P.C. The Hagers have two college-age sons, Britt and Michael.

"Bonnie Hager's death marks Salem's first homicide since January 2010, when Joshua Louis McCoy was stabbed to death. His roommate and friend Samuel Hale was later convicted of involuntary manslaughter in that case."
