Woman Injured In Attempted Murder/Suicide

"LEAVENWORTH, KS — A Leavenworth woman remained in critical condition Thursday following a shooting the night before. The man believed to be responsible for the shooting has committed suicide, a police spokesman said.

"Amber Robinson, 27, told police she’d been shot Wednesday by her estranged husband, Alan Robinson, who later was found dead at his residence, according to Maj. Robert Smith, deputy chief of the Leavenworth Police Department.

"The shooting was reported at 6:48 p.m. Wednesday in the 1900 block of Third Avenue.

"When police arrived, they found Amber Robinson in a vehicle. She’d been shot in the shoulder and head. She was conscious and able to identify the shooter, Smith said.

"She was taken to Saint John Hospital and later flown by helicopter to the University of Kansas Hospital, Kansas City, Kan., Smith said.

"Amber Robinson apparently had dropped off her children at the home of a family member of her estranged husband. She was shot as she was starting to leave in her vehicle.

"`She had no contact with (her husband) prior to the shooting,` Smith said.

"Officers went to the suspect’s home in the 1000 block of Central Avenue. They found his car, but there was no answer at the door.

"Smith said police did not have enough probable cause at that point to enter the home so they left the area.

"At 9:18 p.m. Wednesday, officers were summoned back to the suspect’s residence.

"`Family members had forced entry into the residence and found Mr. Robinson is the basement having taken his own life,` Smith said.

"Police found a .380 caliber handgun at the residence that is believed to have been used in the shooting of Amber Robinson."
