Elderly Couple Dead In Bloody Murder/Suicide

"HIALEAH, FL — An elderly couple was found dead Monday in an apparent murder-suicide in Hialeah.

"Roberto Vázquez, 72, fatally stabbed his wife Nilda, 67, in their home at 225 W. 60 Street, said Carl Zogby, spokesman for the Hialeah Police Departament.

"Authorities say Roberto Vázquez had a history of mental illness and that police had been responded four times in as many years to domestic-related disturbances at the couple's home.

"The bodies were discovered Monday after a concerned friend of Nilda Vázquez called police to say her friend wasn't picking up her phone.

"Inside the house, police found both dead from knife wounds, Zogby added. The couple had apparently been married for many years, with three adult children."

  1. This is a horrible situation which impacted an entire family, their friends and coworkers. Please keep in mind that mental illness is an illness just like heart disease and cancer. If not treated properly, the results can be devastating -like in this situation. Many times in elderly people,it is difficult to tell if they are mentally ill or getting dementia. I hope everyone will join me in praying for this man's soul and I hope that the Hialeah Police did everything in their power to get this couple help. If not, every officer that responded to their home should be required to take additional coursework in dealing with the mentally ill and resultant violent acts. I suffer from depression and have been treated horribly by my husband and the police - people with depression and related illnesses need to have the love and support of their families to get better and get the medical/psychological attention they need. My heart goes out to anyone who lacks treatment for their demons. Please let this case be a learning experience for everyone involved and we need more people to advocate for the mentally ill.
