Mother And Son Dead

"CAPE GIRARDEAU, MO — The victims in an early morning shooting that left a Cape Girardeau County man dead and his mother seriously injured at 3809 Old Route V have been identified.

"Charlie Ussery, 45, died as a result of a self-inflicted gunshot and his mother, Lana Ussery, 64, is in stable condition after undergoing surgery this morning at a local hospital, according Lt. David James of the Cape Girardeau County Sheriff's Department.

"A witness, whose name has not yet been released by authorities, may face charges of being a convicted felon in possession of a fire arm, according to the sheriff's department.

"He allegedly fired shots into the air to get someone's attention as he was leaving the home, where the shooting occurred, officers said.

"At about 3:50 a.m., the sheriff's department received a series of 911 hang up calls from the home, near the intersection of Old Route V and Highway 177 north of Cape Girardeau.

"While traveling to the scene, deputies were notified that a female caller said she had been shot at the home and that another man in the house had also been shot.

"About the same time, other witnesses who had been at the home went to the Cape Girardeau Police Department and reported they had witnessed a man shoot the woman and then shoot himself.

"John Clifton, Cape Girardeau County Coroner, said the mother and son pair may have been struggling over a gun.

"Jerry Goin, chief deputy coroner, said there would be no autopsy performed on Charlie Ussery, but he'll perform a series of toxicology tests.

"There are no suspects at large at this time."
