"Straphangers" En-snarled By Murder/Suicide

"BROOKLYN, NY — A deranged Brooklyn man fatally stabbed his mother and repeatedly slashed his father's throat Monday before he threw himself in the path of a subway train, police said.

"Ryan Devaney somehow survived a near-death encounter with an oncoming G-train and was pulled screaming from the tracks before being rushed to Lutheran Medical Center where he was in serious condition.

"His mother, identified as Margaret Devaney, had been stabbed in the eye and abdomen. She died later at Methodist Hospital, police said.

"His dad, Raymond Devaney, who was stabbed twice in the throat, was also hospitalized in critical condition, police said.

"Meanwhile, police were combing through the blood-spattered Windsor Terrace home and trying to piece together what happened.

"Devaney, 31, has had at least one brush with the law. He was arrested two years ago in Palm Beach County, Fla. for possession of drug paraphernelia, records show.

"Police responded to a call for help at 8:15 a.m. after Devaney's blood-spattered parents were seen staggering out of their Howard Place home.

"Seven minutes later, Devaney apparently tried to kill himself by jumping off the tracks at the 15th St. station into the path of a G train, police said.

"He was rushed to Lutheran Medical Center.

"The incident snarled the morning commute for legions of straphangers."
