Teen Expected To Survive Botched Murder/Suicide
"OSCEOLA, IN - A teen arrested Tuesday night after allegedly stabbing his girlfriend had planned to kill her and then commit suicide, according to a handwritten note police say they found on the teen.
"St. Joseph County police officers arrested the 17-year-old about 10 p.m. at the girl's house in the 54000 block of Buckeye Road, near the intersection of Edison Road, in the eastern part of the county.
"Prosecutors expect to charge the teen today, as an adult, with attempted murder, said St. Joseph County Prosecutor Michael Dvorak.
"Police found the victim, 17, lying on the kitchen floor. She had nine stab wounds on her sternum, left shoulder, left arm, right hand, upper back and left leg below the knee, according to the incident report.
"The report said she was treated at the scene and taken to a local hospital. She is expected to survive.
"On Wednesday, the suspect was transferred to the St. Joseph County Jail, Dvorak said. The Tribune does not generally identify suspects until they have been formally charged.
"According to the police report, the two teens had been dating and the suspect became upset after the girl tried to break up with him.
"The suspect was not in the home when police arrived about 9:15 p.m., the report said.
"He later appeared, holding a miter saw, from behind a parked car.
"Officers initially thought he was holding a machete or a sawed-off shotgun, according to the report.
"They raised their firearms and told him to drop his weapon. He yelled back at them, and officers told him again to put down the weapon, according to the report.
"Eventually, he complied with their order to lie on the ground.
"Police found a pocketknife on the suspect and a large kitchen knife in the home's enclosed patio area, the report said.
"The suspect was arrested and taken to the Juvenile Justice Center, where officers found the note."

Brit Snaps, Kills Twelve
"CUMBRIA, UK - A trivial row over rivals stealing fares is believed to have sparked a taxi driver's horrific killing spree which left 13 dead yesterday.
"After a heated argument on Tuesday night, Derrick Bird is said to have stormed off saying: `There's going to be a rampage tomorrow.`
"Bird, 52, awoke next morning to commit the worst massacre in Britain since Dunblane in 1996.
"After shooting dead his twin brother, a solicitor and a taxi driver, he calmly unleashed carnage across the area to the west of the Lake District over the following three hours.
"With a shotgun and high-powered rifle pointing from the window of his Citroen Picasso taxi he went on a 20-mile terror drive, killing another nine at random before shooting himself.
"A further 25 were injured with eight still in hospital last night, three of them in a critical condition.
"The tiny Cumbrian police force was so overwhelmed that bodies were still lying in the streets seven hours after the killings."
