Body In The Snow, Killer Dead In Barn

"WOODLAWN, VA — Carroll authorities aren’t releasing the names of two victims of what appears to be a murder/suicide Sunday in Woodlawn.

"According to Carroll County Sheriff J.B. Gardner, his department responded to a call at 12:40 p.m. of a possible shooting on Joy Ranch Road and a woman lying in the snow beside the road near the gym area of the Joy Ranch Home for Children. Gardner said Sgt. Bobby Lyons and Deputy Jarret Combs were the first on the scene, where they found a female approximately 40 years of age deceased. The Sheriff said Lyons and Combs spoke at the scene to a witness who claimed to have observed a white male shoot a woman before jumping into a maroon SUV and driving off.

"At about 3:52 p.m., Gardner said his office received another call reporting a possible self-inflicted gunshot wound on Iris Road, about three miles away from Joy Ranch.

"`There is a barn there and officers responded and found a maroon SUV matching the description given by the witness, and they found a body of a deceased white male inside the barn,` Gardner said. `A handgun was recovered at the scene and will be submitted to Roanoke to the forensics lab for a possible match. Other items of evidence were taken from the SUV that appear to tie the two scenes together.`

"Gardner said both the female victim from Joy Ranch Road and the male victim from Iris Road will be sent to the Medical Examiner’s Office in Roanoke for autopsies. Names will not be released, he added, until they’ve been examined in Roanoke. Carroll deputies continue to investigate the case, Gardner said."
