One Dead, One Injured In Retirement Community Shooting
"CARLSBAD, CA — An 80-year-old man is dead and a 63-year-old woman was taken to the hospital Monday afternoon after a shooting at the Tavarua Senior Apartments in Carlsbad.
"The gunfire erupted about 12:45 p.m. in the 3500 block of Harding Street in Carlsbad, near Palm Avenue and just west of Interstate 5, according to Carlsbad police.
"The man was found dead in the complex's courtyard. The woman was airlifted to Scripps La Jolla Hospital in undisclosed condition, police said.
"Police are investigating the possibility that the incident is an attempted murder/suicide.
"A witness said he was in the elevator with the woman and both exited—he went in one direction, she went to the courtyard. He said within minutes he heard a gunshot, causing him to turn around. It was at that point he said he saw the man, standing over the fallen woman, fire another shot at her.
"The man said he ran to call 911, but when he came back to the courtyard he saw the man shoot himself.
"The names of the man and woman, both residents at the complex, were not immediately available.
"The witness told [reporters] he believed the man and the woman may have had some kind of relationship."
