Elderly Shooter, 92, Dead; Wife Expected To Survive

"ALLENTOWN, PA — A man who police say wanted to end his wife's suffering, shot her and then turned the gun on himself Friday morning.

"According to Captain William Reinik, 92-year-old Izak Waide, of 1620 East Washington Street, contacted the couple's son in New York and told them he couldn't take it anymore.

"His wife suffered from advanced Alzheimer's and Waide was apparently at the breaking point, police said. He wanted to end her suffering, the son told police.

"The son contacted police, who sent officers to the scene Friday around 7:45 a.m., but it was too late.

"Waide had shot his wife, 92-year-old Malka Waide, in the head, police said. She was taken to St. Luke's Hospital in Fountain Hill, and is expected to survive. Her condition was not available.

"Waide was pronounced dead at the scene at 7:46 a.m. by the Lehigh County coroner's office. His death was ruled a suicide."
