"SCHUYLER, NE — A 41-year-old man faces two felony charges after a stabbing and attempted suicide early Sunday morning in Schuyler.

"According to the Colfax County Attorney's Office, Amauri Herrera-Alvarez of Schuyler, formerly of Florida, was charged with attempted first-degree murder and use of a weapon to commit a felony following the incident around 2:15 a.m. Sunday at a Schuyler apartment building.

"Schuyler Police officers responding to the incident at 511 W. 12th St. saw Herrera-Alvarez attempting to hang himself from a tree on the property, but were able to intervene by cutting the rope.

"Inside one of the apartments, they found a 34-year-old female with multiple stab wounds to her throat lying in a pool of blood. The woman was conscious, but unable to communicate, according to the county attorney’s office. Her name hasn’t been released, pending notification of family members.

"Herrera-Alvarez and the female victim were transported by Schuyler Rescue to CHI Health Schuyler hospital and later taken by helicopter to an Omaha hospital."
