Three Dead In "Suspicious Circumstances"

"LA PLATA COUNTY, CO — Authorities are investigating an apparent murder-suicide after three bodies were discovered Friday afternoon, a news release from the La Plata County Sheriff’s Office said.

"After receiving a call at about 1:40 p.m., deputies were sent to a residence on Colorado Highway 140 about one half mile north of the Colorado-New Mexico border to investigate suspicious circumstances at the location.

"`When deputies arrived on the property, they discovered the body of a man hanging in a barn from what initially appears to be a possible suicide,` the release said.

"While conducting a check of the property, deputies found a foot “protruding from freshly dug dirt” near a river bank, and they recovered the body of another man.

"Based on information found at the residence, investigators asked Durango Police Department to check on the welfare of a woman at a home on Riverview Drive in Durango.

"Durango Police Lt. Ray Shupe said that Durango Police officers responded to the house and found the woman, age 67. The death is being investigated as a homicide, Shupe said.

"While the three deaths appear connected, investigators were only able to say that no one else is currently being sought in connection with the deaths.

"`Based on the information we have at this time,` sheriff’s office spokesman Dan Bender said, `we don’t feel that La Plata County residents should feel any fear for their safety. We have no indication there is a suspect at large.`

"Names of the deceased were not be released pending the notification of next of kin."
