Woman Survives Being Shot Three Times

"ELBERTA, AL — One person is dead and another is clinging to life after an apparent attempted murder-suicide in Elberta Saturday morning.

"Officials say Craig Cotton shot his wife, 35-year-old Deana Cotton, in the groin and twice in the legs, then turned the gun on himself.

"Police say Deana escaped from the home and ran next door. She was conscious and alert when EMTs got there and described everything that happened.

"Officials say the two got into an argument about Deana leaving to work a second job. She left then came back in the house to get something, and police say her husband met her at the door with a shotgun. He shot her once with the shotgun and twice with a pistol.

"`It's awful, man. I hope them kids didn't witness this, I do not know,` said Carl Gidson, who owns the property next door.

"`This is an ongoing domestic violence situation according to some of the friends and some of the parents on both sides I talked to,` said Elberta Police Chief Stan DeZane. `It's been an ongoing situation that's just escalated to more. This is a tragedy that's happened.`

"Deana was rushed to the hospital and is expected to survive. The couple's two young sons were not in the home at the time of the shooting."
