Domestic Violence Enters The Workplace

"SALINA, KS - A man accused of shooting two people at a Salina motel Thursday morning shot and killed himself Thursday evening after a short standoff with police. 49-year-old fatally shot himself after pulling into a ditch on North Street just east of Salina Thursday evening. Chavez was being sought in connection with the shooting of 41-year-old Rosa Marie Chavez and 48-year-old Charles Losey at the Ramada Hotel and Convention Center in Salina Thursday morning. Both are employees of the hotel. Rosa is Alberto's ex-wife.

"Salina Police Chief Jim Hill says that both were shot in a women's bathroom. They were discovered after Rosa called for help on a hotel walkie talkie. Witnesses saw Mario Alberto Chavez leave the scene.

"Both victims were transported to Salina Regional Health Center with critical injuries. Charles Losey died Thursday night. As of late Friday morning Rosa Chavez was in critical condition.

"Police spent all day Thursday searching for Mario Alberto Chavez. A citizen tip led them to him at around 8:00 in the evening. He was driving on North Street, and led officers east out of town. He crossed the Smoky Hill River Bridge, and pulled off the road. Chavez initially exited the vehicle. Officers yelled to him, using a public address system on a patrol car. Chavez sat back down in his vehicle. As police continued to try and talk to him, Chavez fatally shot himself.

"A gun recovered at scene is believed to be the same gun that was used in the early morning shootings.

"Chief Hill says the terrible crime is a result of domestic violence, and workplace violence. He says that Mario Alberto Chavez was a jealous man, and a had a history of threatening his ex-wife."
