Fire Concealed Murder/Suicide

"WARRENTON, OR - The Wednesday morning fire at a home in Warrenton was not what caused the death of the couple who lived there.

"Autopsy results determined that Karen DeWilde, 69, died from loss of blood from a knife wound to her throat, according to Clatsop County Chief Deputy District Attorney Ron Brown. He said she was stabbed by her husband, Joseph DeWilde, 73, who started the house on fire and then committed suicide. He died of a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Autopsies were conducted by the State Medical Examiner's Office in Portland. The results were released today.

"The fire reported at 4:21 a.m. Wednesday, when a passerby spotted smoke coming from the one story wood fram house at 242 N.W. First Ave. Warrenton firefighters discovered the bodies after they put out the blaze.

"Warrenton Police Officer Len Mossman was the lead investigator for the case, which was considered a possible crime scene until the cause of the victims' deaths and the cause of the fire could be determined. The Clatsop County Major Crime Team was called in to assist Warrenton police because the small department has limited resources. No motive has been made public, but court records show Karen DeWilde filed for divorce last month.

"Warrenton Chief of Police Mathew Workman said today he had not yet heard the results of the fire investigation."
