Man Kills Grandfather In Attempted Murder/Suicide

"CHEVERLY, MD - Prince George's County police are investigating a Thursday morning homicide in Landover in which a man allegedly shot and killed his grandfather and then pulled the trigger on himself. The 23-year-old grandson remains critically injured at a local hospital.

"The shooting occurred just outside of the Cheverly town limits and is being handled by the county police, according to Cheverly Police.

"Police responded to a call to check on a home in the 6300 block of Kilmer Street because of concerns about what was happening inside, said Officer Evan Baxter, a spokesman for the Prince George's County Police Department. He could not immediately confirm details of the call.

"He said police arrived about 11:14 a.m. to find James Laurence Bowen, 78, of the same address dead from an upper-body gunshot wound and Bowen's grandson suffering from a self-inflicted upper-body gunshot wound, according to county police.

"The grandson, who remains unidentified by police, is still in critical condition, Baxter said. They were both living together at the Kilmer Street address but it is unknown if anyone else lived there, he said.

"There is no information yet about what may have led to the shooting, Baxter said. Police are waiting to see how he recovers before filing charges and releasing his identity, he said.

"A call to the Bowen residence Friday afternoon yielded a busy signal."
