Welfare Check Finds Elderly Couple Dead


"OSWEGO, NY - Oswego Police now say an elderly couple whose bodies were found in their East 7th Street home is a case of murder-suicide.

"Investigators now report that 86-year-old Josephine Hyse was killed from a gunshot wound to the neck. The autopsy reveled she also had taken a large number of prescription narcotics. Investigators say the fatal shot was fired by her husband, 89-year-old Richard Hyse.

"Police are still awaiting the results of a toxicology test, but believe Richard Hyse died by taking an overdose of a prescription narcotics.

"Police are still investigating the circumstances surrounding the couple's death. They had been contacted on Monday to check on the welfare of the couple at their home. When police responded, they discovered the Hyses' bodies in their bed.

"Police said they don't believe anyone else was involved in the deaths.

"Richard Hyse founded the business program at the State University of New York at Oswego. Both became prominent in Oswego community affairs and the arts."
