Shoot Thy Neighbor... And Thyself

"ASHEVILLE, NC — A Buncombe County man shot his neighbor to death with a high-powered rifle inside her mobile home Friday night then turned the gun on himself, authorities said.

"Investigators identified the female victim as Peggy Short. The gunman was Michael Jones, said Lt. Ross Dillingham of the Buncombe County Sheriff's Office.

"Jones also shot a man, Charlie Wright, who was able to escape outside and call 911, Sheriff Van Duncan said this morning. Wright was hospitalized with a wound to the upper arm.

"Deputies responded to a mobile home park on Race Path Way off Emma Road around 10:45 p.m.

"`(Investigators) feel very confident in the fact that the person responsible for it took his own life after he shot the two other people,` Duncan said.

"Deputies initially found Wright outside. He told officers that he had been shot inside the mobile home belonging to the woman, the sheriff said. Short and Jones were found dead inside.

"Duncan said all three knew each other. Jones lived next door to Short.

"The sheriff said it’s unclear what led to the shooting."
